PROGRAM PURPOSE

Family Medicine Lectures:

The purpose of this CME activity is to review and discuss common general medical conditions and to provide guidelines for their management and to provide updated guidelines for prevention of common primary care conditions. Topics have been chosen to benefit the family physician, general internist and Advance Practice Professionals in an ambulatory care setting.

ENT & Sleep Medicine Lectures:

The purpose of these lectures is to update the attendees knowledge of common ENT and sleep disorders seen in the primary care office. This will include updating clinical guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of facial paralysis, facial pain and headache disorders and "sinus headaches" as well as a discussion of the head and neck manifestations of reflux disease and the diagnosis and treatment of various forms of rhinitis.

The sleep medicine lectures will update knowledge in the latest diagnostic and treatment options for obstructive sleep apnea including hypoglossal nerve stimulation.

We will discuss other sleep disorders such as narcolepsy, REM sleep behavioral disorder and nocturnal leg movement syndromes. The attendees will learn the basics of CPAP management for patients with OSA and provide a basis for incorporating CPAP care into the primary care office. It is the desired outcome that these lectures will result in improved diagnosis of head and neck and sleep disorders resulting in effective treatment and improved patient outcomes.

  1. Healthy Lifestyles and the Obesity Epidemic
    • Discuss the epidemiology of obesity
    • Discuss the role of lifestyle habits in prevention and management of obesity
  2. Screening for Cardiovascular Disease and Cancer
    • Distinguish the difference between primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.
    • Enumerate the recommended screening tests for breast, colon and lung cancer and their timing.
    • Describe the recommended guidelines for blood pressure screening, cholesterol screening, and diabetes screening.
  3. Evidence-based Exercise and Diet options for Cardiovascular Prevention
    • Describe the recommended levels of exercise for adults.
    • Describe the most appropriate diet for patients with diabetes or hypertension.
  4. The Physiologic Basis of a Healthy Diet and Exercise - a primer
    • Provide at least three physiologic effects of exercise on human cells
    • Describe three physiologic mechanisms for the impact of fruits and vegetables on health
  5. Update on Pneumonia Management
    • Describe the most common causes of community-acquired pneumonia.
    • Identify the latest recommended initial empiric treatment of patients with community-acquired pneumonia with or without co-existing morbidities.
  6. Update on COPD Management
    • Describe the classification of severity of COPD according to symptoms and spirometry values.
    • Identify the recommended initial treatment of patients with COPD according to severity.
  7. Update on Asthma Management
    • Describe the classification of asthma according to symptoms and spirometry values.
    • Identify the recommended initial treatment of patients with asthma for each level of severity.
    • Describe the important differences between treatment options for asthma and treatment for COPD.
  8. Facial Paralysis and Bell's Palsy
    • Participants should be able to differentiate the potential causes of unilateral facial paralysis and know the AAO-HNS guidelines for diagnosis, treatment and follow-up.
  9. Head and Neck Manifestations of Reflux
    • Participants will be able to list and associate symptoms that may be caused by reflux in patients that have no heartburn or GI symptoms.
  10. Rhinitis- Not just Allergy
    • Participants should be able to recognize allergic from non-allergic rhinitis and improve patient care with the most appropriate treatment.
  11. Sinus Headaches and facial pain syndromes
    • Participants should be able to differentiate facial pain arising from sinus disease from the many other causes of facial pain and headaches and elicit symptoms that suggests other etiologies for patient headaches.
  12. Sleep Apnea Update 2020
    • Participants should be able to identify risk factors for OSA and co-morbidities. Treatment options and follow-up will be emphasized.
  13. Narcolepsy and other sleep disorders
    • Participants should be able to diagnose other causes of daytime sleepiness and discuss diagnostic testing and treatment options.
  14. Incorporating CPAP care in the Primary Care Office
    • Participants should be able to understand the basics of CPAP machines and differences between CPAP,BPAP, ASV and auto PAP machines.

Dana E. King, MD, MS

Professor and Chair of Family Medicine 
West Virginia University School of Medicine (WVU) 
Morgantown, West Virginia 

Dr. King is a board certified family physician who has served as Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at West Virginia University since 2012. Prior to that he was Vice Chair of Family Medicine and Director of Research at Medical University of South Carolina, and previously, was on the faculty of the East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine. 

Throughout his career he has been a clinical researcher and educator with several areas of emphasis including lung disease, cardiovascular risk reduction, and clinical epidemiology. He was co-founder of the WV Practice-Based Research Network and is a senior leader in the WV Clinical Translational Science Institute. He has been a leader of the North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG) since early in his career and currently is an officer on the Executive Board. He has been a national speaker for the American Academy of Family Physicians on lung disease and other topics.

Dr. King has published over 100 peer-reviewed research publications and his work has been recognized with a Distinguished Paper at NAPCRG and has been a finalist for paper of the year at the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. He enjoys time with family and is an avid road bike cyclist. Dr. King is an experienced lecturer and maintains an active clinical practice.

The cafes of St. Mark's Square, Palazzo-lined canals plied by gondolas, the elegant Doge's Palace, the Bridge of Sighs and the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore: Venice is one impossibly beautiful sight after next. A great collection of Renaissance era art is housed at Gallerie dell'Accademia. Or, if you prefer modern art, Venice is home to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. Kusadasi (Ephesus), Turkey - The UNESCO World Heritage ruins of Ephesus impress even those familiar with the world's other ancient cities. Though excavations have been underway for 150 years, only 20 percent of the city has been uncovered. Check out the the Celsus Library — built in 117 A.D., the site is made up of towering columns highlighted by the statue of the goddess of wisdom. Cruises to Ephesus will give you a taste of Turkish life by strolling the seafront promenade and the bustling city center. Walk Marble Street, paved with actual marble slabs, which takes you from downtown to the Temple of Artemis — you can still see one lone remaining column from this wonder of the ancient world.

Chania (Souda), Crete, Greece - Chania is the second largest city of Crete, and one of the most beautiful. It lies along the north coast of the island at the east end of the Gulf of Chania. Chania is the site of the ancient Minoan settlement the Greeks called Cydonia (Kydonia), which was mentioned in Virgil's Aeneid. The site has been continuously inhabited from Neolithic times-at least 5000 years. The city's rich history can be traced through historic buildings and monuments with Venetian, Turkish and Greek architecture.

Corfu, Greece - Perched above the Adriatic Sea, Corfu, Greece is the second largest Ionian island, and its size is rivaled by its tremendous history and dynamic cultural identity.
