PORTS OF CALL

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona greets you with a vibrant energy, a city where the fantastical architecture of Catalan Modernisme coexists with the shadows of a deep Gothic past. Your day here is a study in captivating contrasts. The undeniable centerpiece is Antoni Gaudí's magnum opus, La Sagrada Familia. This basilica, a century-and-a-half in the making, is a breathtaking testament to faith and architectural genius that must be experienced from within to be truly understood. For more of Gaudí's dream-like vision, a stroll along the elegant Passeig de Gràcia reveals Casa Batlló, a residence seemingly sculpted from bone and mosaic.

Alternatively, lose yourself in the Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter), a medieval labyrinth of narrow cobblestone streets opening onto sunlit plazas. Here, the serene Cathedral of Barcelona offers a tranquil counterpoint to Gaudí's exuberance. This historic heart of the city is also a hub for unique boutiques and artisan shops. For a sensory immersion into local life, navigate the famed Las Ramblas to the Mercat de la Boqueria, a kaleidoscope of fresh produce, cured meats, and bustling food stalls.

Art aficionados can delve into the formative years of a master at the Museu Picasso, housed in a series of medieval palaces. No visit is complete without indulging in the city's culinary scene. Duck into a neighborhood bar for authentic tapas and a glass of cava, savoring the flavors that define Catalan culture. While one day is merely an introduction, it’s enough to be thoroughly enchanted by Barcelona's artistic soul and zest for life.

Palma de Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain

Provence (Marseille), France

Marseille is not a polished museum piece; it is France’s oldest and second-largest city, a vibrant, working port with a palpable energy and a history stretching back 2,600 years. Its character is a compelling mix of grit and grandeur, offering a genuine slice of Mediterranean life. The natural starting point is the Vieux Port (Old Port), a bustling U-shaped harbor where fishing boats bob alongside yachts. Here, the daily fish market is a spectacle of local life, and the surrounding quays are lined with cafés perfect for observing the city in motion.

For the definitive view, make the journey up to the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde. This Romano-Byzantine basilica, affectionately called "La Bonne Mère" (The Good Mother), offers breathtaking 360-degree panoramas of the city, the sea, and the surrounding islands. We recommend taking the tourist train or a taxi for the steep ascent to conserve time and energy. Back at sea level, lose yourself in Le Panier, the city's oldest quarter. Its maze of narrow, winding streets, ochre-colored buildings, and artisan workshops feels a world away from the grand 19th-century boulevards elsewhere.

Marseille also serves as the essential gateway to the broader Provence region. A popular day excursion leads to the elegant city of Aix-en-Provence, the refined counterpoint to Marseille's urban dynamism, known for its fountains, markets, and ties to the artist Cézanne. Alternatively, for a stunning natural escape, head to the charming fishing village of Cassis, the launching point for boat tours into the Calanques National Park—a series of dramatic limestone fjords with brilliant turquoise water. Whether you immerse yourself in the city's layered history or venture into the Provençal countryside, Marseille offers a rich and authentic experience.

La Spezia, Italy

La Spezia serves as a practical and efficient gateway to some of the most celebrated destinations in Italy. While the city itself is a pleasant naval and commercial port, its primary value for most visitors is its strategic location, offering direct access to the wonders of the Ligurian coast and the treasures of Tuscany.

The premier excursion is, without question, the Cinque Terre. This string of five ancient seaside villages, clinging to cliffs along the Italian Riviera, is a UNESCO World Heritage site for good reason. The most effective way to visit is by a short train ride from La Spezia Centrale station, which connects all five villages. You can hop on and off, perhaps hiking a portion of the scenic coastal trail (check for trail closures beforehand) or simply enjoying the unique character of each town, from the vibrant harbor of Vernazza to the iconic vistas of Manarola. A ferry from La Spezia’s port also offers a beautiful perspective from the sea, though it is slower and weather-dependent.

For those with an ambition for Renaissance art and architecture, both Pisa and Florence are viable, albeit long, day trips. A visit to Pisa is focused on its magnificent Piazza dei Miracoli (“Square of Miracles”), where the Leaning Tower, the Duomo, and the Baptistery form a stunning architectural ensemble. Florence, further afield, demands a full and fast-paced day. It offers an immersion into the heart of the Renaissance, with the chance to see Michelangelo’s David, Brunelleschi's Duomo, and the Ponte Vecchio. Given the travel time, a structured tour is often the most pragmatic way to experience these Tuscan cities from the port.

Should you prefer a more relaxed day, or if you’ve previously visited the main attractions, La Spezia itself offers an authentic slice of modern Italian life. Stroll the palm-lined waterfront promenade, explore the pedestrianized shopping streets of Via del Prione, and experience the bustling daily food market in Piazza Cavour. It’s an excellent opportunity to enjoy regional specialties like focaccia and fresh pesto without the crowds of the more famous nearby destinations.

Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy

Let’s begin with the essential truth of this port call: Rome is one of the world’s most magnificent destinations, but your ship docks in Civitavecchia, a working port about 60-90 minutes away. This distance is the single most important factor in planning your day. A visit to the Eternal City from a cruise ship is not a casual stroll; it’s a tactical operation, and a brilliant one if planned correctly.

With limited time, you must choose your focus. Trying to conquer all of Rome in eight hours is a recipe for exhaustion. Instead, choose one or two core experiences. For a deep dive into antiquity, dedicate your day to the epic trio of the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. Pre-booking tickets is not a suggestion; it is an absolute necessity to avoid spending half your day in a queue. Standing inside the Colosseum is a moment that truly transcends tourism.

Alternatively, you can immerse yourself in the grandeur of the Vatican. A visit to St. Peter's Basilica (note the modest dress code), the Vatican Museums, and Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel is a profound artistic pilgrimage. Again, advance, skip-the-line tickets are mandatory. The sheer scale of the art and history here can be overwhelming, so consider a guided tour to provide context and navigate the vast collections efficiently.

If you prefer a more atmospheric experience, focus on the iconic landmarks of the city center. A classic walk could include tossing a coin into the Trevi Fountain, gazing up through the Pantheon's oculus, and admiring Bernini’s fountains in the Piazza Navona. This route allows for more spontaneity—stopping for a perfect espresso, discovering a hidden courtyard, or indulging in a scoop of world-class gelato. A day in Rome is a whirlwind, but it offers a powerful, unforgettable glimpse into a city that has shaped the very foundations of Western civilization.

Naples, Italy

Naples is less a polished tourist destination and more a vibrant, chaotic, and profoundly authentic slice of Southern Italy. As a port of call, it’s a world-class launchpad to some of history’s most significant sites and Europe’s most breathtaking coastlines. Your challenge isn't finding something to do; it's accepting you can't possibly do it all in one day.

For most, the primary draw lies just outside the city: the astonishing ruins of Pompeii. Buried by Vesuvius in A.D. 79, this ancient city offers an unparalleled window into Roman life. We strongly recommend a guided tour here; the site is vast, and an expert can bring the silent stones of its villas, temples, and brothels to life. For a more intimate and often better-preserved alternative, consider nearby Herculaneum, which was entombed in mud rather than ash, preserving incredible details like wooden beams and mosaics.

If you prefer legendary beauty to ancient history, the Bay of Naples delivers. A hydrofoil can whisk you across the water to the glamorous Isle of Capri, famed for its dramatic Faraglioni rocks, chic boutiques, and the ethereal Blue Grotto (weather permitting). Alternatively, a drive along the coast brings you to Sorrento, a charming town perched on cliffs with stunning views and a more relaxed atmosphere, perfect for sipping limoncello and soaking in the scenery.

Should you choose to dive into Naples itself, be prepared for an intense and rewarding experience. The city’s historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage site, a labyrinth of narrow streets, hidden courtyards, and baroque churches. The National Archaeological Museum is an absolute must, housing the priceless mosaics, frescoes, and artifacts recovered from Pompeii and Herculaneum. And, of course, there is the pizza. This is its birthplace, and enjoying an authentic Neapolitan pizza is not just a meal, but a cultural imperative. Naples is gritty, loud, and utterly unforgettable—a port that rewards the curious traveler with an experience of raw, unfiltered Italy.

Cruise Line Regulation: Because of the group size and to accommodate the Dine Around option, so that everyone can change seats and network during dinner, rather than having to have assigned seating every night the ship is requiring you prepay your gratuities. They can be paid next month (May) if you wish, rather than with your final payment.

What Can Travel Insurance Help Protect?

Allianz Travel Insurance plans can protect you before and during your trip—keeping you, your loved ones, and your travel budget safer. Benefits vary by plan, and these are brief descriptions. Please read your plan documents for details.

TRIP CANCELLATION

Reimburses your prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason, such as you, a family member, or traveling companion experiencing a covered illness or injury. Examples include:

  • A doctor says you or a traveling companion is too sick to fly
  • Your parent or child requires hospitalization
  • You need to attend the birth of a family member’s child
  • You have a traffic accident (not breakdown) on the way to the airport
  • A storm shuts down your airport for 24 hours or more

TRIP INTERRUPTION

Reimburses your unused, non-refundable travel expenses and increased transportation costs during your trip if you have to return home early due to a covered reason, for instance when a family member has a qualifying medical emergency and needs your care. Examples include:

  • You have a covered illness or injury and a doctor says you must return home
  • A family member has a qualifying injury and needs your care
  • A covered emergency, like a fire or flood, makes your home uninhabitable

TRAVEL DELAY

If you have a covered delay while traveling, travel insurance can reimburse you for meals, accommodations, and transportation expenses when your trip is delayed for a minimum number of consecutive hours for a covered reason. Minimum number of hours varies by plan.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE

Reimburses your expenses related to covered medical and dental emergencies* that might occur on your trip. This benefit can be especially helpful if you have a covered emergency outside the United States, as most health insurance policies won’t cover you outside the country. Examples include:

  • You slip and break your ankle while sightseeing
  • You get food poisoning while sampling the local cuisine
  • You lose a filling and need immediate dental treatment*

*A sublimit and maximum apply for this benefit. Check your plan documents for details.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION

Arranges and pays for medically necessary transportation following a covered injury or illness to the nearest appropriate medical facility to receive care and get you home after treatment.

BAGGAGE LOSS, DAMAGE, or THEFT

THE SPLENDOUR OF MOORISH CORDOBA AND GRANADA
3 Night Post-Cruise Package

GRANADA possesses an outstanding heritage, the result of a blend of civilizations. Perched high on a strategic hill, the citadel of the Alhambra and the General life display a collection of lush gardens and magical palaces, the only royal residences of an Islamic dynasty still standing up since the Middle Ages. Courtyards where water is omnipresent and walls covered by refined geometric and floral motifs, recreate in a codified manner the image of the Garden of Eden.

Your guide, an expert in Moorish and Islamic Art, will introduce you to the secrets and symbols contained in these palaces worthy of the Arabian Nights, a reflection of a whole civilization.

The city possesses bewitching historical neighbourhoods, like the Albayzín. This oldest quarter of Granada, a UNESCO heritage site, keeps the layout of the Medieval metropolis, a labyrinth of winding streets and traditional houses with terraces of gardens gazing at striking views: the mighty towers of the Alhambra and in the background the snowy peaks of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

The Historic Center of Granada possesses hidden treasures of its Moorish and Islamic past, the oratory of the Madraza (Islamic University), the al-Qaysariya (the Silk Market) and a Caravanserai of the 14th century, all of them witnesses of the confluence of trade, wealth, circulation of ideas, technologies and sciences in the cities of Al Andalusia, the area of Spain and the Iberian Peninsula controlled by the Moors for 800 years during the Middle Ages.

Basil Davidson, one of the most noted historians declared that there were no lands at that time (the eighth century) "more admired by its neighbours, or more comfortable to live in, than a rich African civilization which took shape in Spain."

ITINERARY: CORDOBA, LA MEZUITA, THE ALHAMBRA AND GRANADA

  • You will be met at the ship and transferred to the Train Station for a comfortable journey to Cordoba, once the Capital of Al Andalusia. Food is available for purchase on board the train.
  • After arrival in Cordoba, you will be transferred for dinner and overnight in Cordoba (Night of 8/4)
  • At its height, Cordoba, the center of the Moorish territory in Spain, was the most modern city in Europe. The streets were paved, with raised sidewalks and ten miles of the streets were well illuminated by lamps. Cordoba had 900 public baths. In the tenth and eleventh centuries, public libraries in Europe were non- existent, but education was universal in Moorish Spain, including more than seventy libraries, of which the one in Cordoba housed six hundred manuscripts. Ref: Wikipedia
  • The following morning after breakfast at the hotel in Cordoba, you will visit the Great Mosque of Cordoba (La Mezquita) A UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is still one of the architectural wonders of the world. Its low scarlet and gold roof, supported by 1,000 columns of marble, jasper and porphyry, was lit by thousands of Brass and silver lamps which burned perfumed oils.
  • What UNESCO says: "Cordoba's period of greatest glory began in the 8th century after the Moorish conquest, when some 300 mosques and innumerable palaces and public buildings were built to rival the splendours of Constantinople, Damascus and Baghdad. In the 13th century, under Ferdinand III, the Saint, Cordoba's Great Mosque was turned into a cathedral and new defensive structures, particularly the Alcá zar de los Reyes Cristianos and the Torre Fortaleza de la Calahorra, were erected."
  • After a day of touring Cordoba, you will continue the journey to Granada for dinner and the next two nights. (Nights of 8/5 and 8/6)
  • The following morning, you will visit Alhambra, A UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • 10:15 am - Transfer Hotel Corona to Alhambra in a coach. Your guide, Daniele, will also meet you in the lobby of your hotel.
  • 10:45 - Beginning of the Alhambra tour through the gardens and the Generalife. Entrance to the Nasrid Palaces. At the end of the visit, we will stroll to the Restaurant located on the hill of the Alhambra (10 minute walk)
  • Lunch on your own at Carmen the San Miguel, which enjoys striking views on Granada
  • After lunch, your coach will be waiting for you next to the restaurant, for the transfer to the Albaicin quarter. If some children and adults feel tired, the bus will stop on the way at the hotel. We would continue to the Albaicin quarter with the rest of the group.
  • Walking tour of the Moorish city of Granada. The bus leaves us at the entrance of the Albaicin quarter. We stroll through the labyrinth of narrow streets of this oldest quarter of Granada, which marvelously keeps the layout of the Medieval Moorish City. We walk down the hill, to discover in the historic center of Granada important vestiges of the Moorish past, the silk market, the Madraza (ancient university), a caravanserai, etc.
  • We will have dinner at a restaurant in Grenada prior to returning to the hotel for overnight.
  • After an unforgettable journey, we will transfer to Malaga for flights home with many memories to share with one another.

From there, an air-conditioned coach will take you up the coast of Barcelona for scenic views of the Mediterranean Sea, where you will be able to admire the intense changes the city underwent with the organization of the Olympic Games in 1992. You will drive by the Arc of the Triomf, Ciudadela Park, the Olympic Village, the Olympic Port, the beach and the fisherman's quarter, called Barceloneta, the Port Vell, and Plaza de Colon with its famous Columbus monument, indicating which way he sailed to discover the Americas.
