TARGET AUDIENCE

Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, Physician Assistants

PROGRAM PURPOSE

Purpose:

This course will provide a working knowledge of the most common neurological problems and reinforce principles of clinical diagnosis while reviewing the symptoms and signs of most major neurological diseases. The seminar will also present clear, practical guidelines for managing these common problems including how to integrate laboratory tests and imaging techniques into the patient's evaluation. Finally, the current treatment for these disorders will be developed in sufficient detail to permit independent management or active participation in care with the neurologist.

Emphasis will be placed on clinical diagnosis and practical treatment with introduction of clinical neuroscience as needed to clarify management issues.

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to: recognize the symptoms and signs of the most common neurological diseases; apply fundamental disease concepts to patient management; educate their patients regarding the basic concepts and natural history of these diseases and participate with their patients and consulting neurologists in decisions regarding modern disease therapy and prevention.

This seminar will be relevant to family practitioners, internists, neurologists and others who manage patients with neurological disorders.

PORTS OF CALL

Venice, Italy - Venice is possibly the most romantic place you'll ever visit. It seems almost redundant to describe the charms of Venice. The cafes of St. Mark's Square, Palazzo-lined canals plied by gondolas, the elegant Doge's Palace, the Bridge of Sighs and the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore: Venice is one impossibly beautiful sight after next. A great collection of Renaissance era art is housed at Gallerie dell'Accademia. Or, if you prefer modern art, Venice is home to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. And, if you want to enjoy a truly special meal while here, visit one of the excellent restaurants of the Associazione dei Ristoranti della Buona Accoglienza.

Still not sure how you'll entertain yourself? Here's the New York Times' take on how to get the most out of your time in Venice (published June 12, 2014) 36 Hours in Venice

Dubrovnik, Croatia - Thick 16th-century stone walls encase the entire Old Town of Dubrovnik. But there are no boundaries on the endless adventures you’ll discover among its orange-roofed ramparts. With a made-for-TV appeal— Game of Thrones was actually filmed here— the city commands your attention with the perfectly preserved Rector’s Palace, elaborate Onofrio’s Fountain, and baroque St. Blaise’s Church, named after the city’s patron saint. You can browse museum collections showcasing Croatian artwork, period furniture and shipbuilding traditions. Stand in awe of the Franciscan Monastery library’s 30,000 volumes. Or to get your heart pumping, go cliff diving into the sea and kayak crystal blue waters, with the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’ shimmering in the distance.

Kotor, Montenegro - Looking at a map of Europe, you might be forgiven for missing Kotor — a tiny port in the already-tiny country of Montenegro. But from the moment your Kotor cruise docks, you'll enter a larger-than-life world of mighty forts and towering sea cliffs, the air filled with the refreshing smell of the ocean. On a Mediterranean cruise, you can explore the attractions inside Kotor's fortified Old City, one of the Mediterranean's best-preserved medieval towns. Don't miss the Cathedral of St. Tryphon, an ornate church first consecrated in 1166. Then, scale St. John's Fortress — the hilltop fortifications, dating back to the 6th century, offer the best views of the city, the harbor and the surrounding mountains.

At Sea - Cruising - Cruising

Santorini, Greece - Here on the island of Santorini, you'll find a classic Greek seascape‐whitewashed houses accented by sea-blue roofs. This is a treasure trove for both professional and amateur archeology buffs, with sites that include tombs that date back to the 9th century and the sanctuary of Apollo.

Olympia (Katakolon), Greece - Experience ancient history and modern charm in Katakolon, a vibrant cruise port on the Greek coast. From here, you can catch a glimpse of Olympia, the birthplace of the original Olympic games and a shrine to the ancient Greek gods. Walk through the Olympia complex to get a historical tour of architectural styles, from the classical ruins to the red-tiled roofs of the traditional homes. Then, stroll through the Katakolon's lively center to discover unique local galleries and shops, and grab a seat at an oceanfront taverna with a glass of white wine and a dish of locally caught calamari.

Allianz Travel Insurance plans can protect you before and during your trip—keeping you, your loved ones, and your travel budget safer. Benefits vary by plan, and these are brief descriptions. Please read your plan documents for details.

TRIP CANCELLATION

Reimburses your prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason, such as you, a family member, or traveling companion experiencing a covered illness or injury. Examples include:

  • A doctor says you or a traveling companion is too sick to fly
  • Your parent or child requires hospitalization
  • You need to attend the birth of a family member’s child
  • You have a traffic accident (not breakdown) on the way to the airport
  • A storm shuts down your airport for 24 hours or more

  • A family member has a qualifying injury and needs your care
  • A covered emergency, like a fire or flood, makes your home uninhabitable

If you have a covered delay while traveling, travel insurance can reimburse you for meals, accommodations, and transportation expenses when your trip is delayed for a minimum number of consecutive hours for a covered reason. Minimum number of hours varies by plan.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE

Reimburses your expenses related to covered medical and dental emergencies* that might occur on your trip. This benefit can be especially helpful if you have a covered emergency outside the United States, as most health insurance policies won’t cover you outside the country. Examples include:

  • You lose a filling and need immediate dental treatment*

*A sublimit and maximum apply for this benefit. Check your plan documents for details.

Hotel Locanda Vivaldi

Riva degli Schiavoni 4150-52
Venice, Veneto, 30122

Right on the Venetian Lagoon, Hotel Locanda Vivaldi opened its doors in 1999, providing 27 guest rooms, many of which have sweeping views of the lagoon. Rich Venetian brocade fabrics in majestic reds, blues, and golds adorn the walls as well as sofas and beds, putting visitors in a luxe environment without the luxurious price tag. Murano glass accessories add embellishment and charm to the air-conditioned rooms and suites which overlook the Basin of St. Mark, the quaint Rio dei Greci canal, and the hotel's courtyard. Superior rooms and two junior suites offer amazing 180˚ views of the Piazza San Marco bell tower, Giudecca island, Santa Maria della Salute, and beyond.

Located close to all of Venice's major sights, most of which are visible from the property, Hotel Locanda Vivaldi is also right in the middle of unexplored Venice. In fact, just next door is the church where Antonio Vivaldi, famed composer of the Christmas favorite "Gloria", got his musical start. Beyond that, the Castello neighborhood features off-the-beaten-track shops, museums, and quaint piazzas rarely explored by tourists.
