TARGET AUDIENCE

Nurses, Nurse Practitioners,

PROGRAM PURPOSE

Clinical judgment is the bread and butter of nursing practice. Because clinical judgment happens fluidly for nurses with experience, the process is often intuitive and invisible to them and to others. As a result, nurses new to the workforce may miss vital steps in the process. This workshop is designed to benefit experienced and novice nurses, including those who work with students in both the clinical and classroom setting. It is also designed for students themselves, in preparing to sit for the NCLEX® exam.

The workshop offers the opportunity for attendees to become familiar with and de-mystify the Next Generation NCLEX® standards and to bring them into the classroom and hospital. In addition to reviewing specific questions that guide one's clinical judgment, unfolding case studies grounded in teamwork and physiology for pre-eclamptic patients and postpartum hemorrhage patients will provide a forum for learning and sharing, answering clinical judgment questions that include, "Is it better to know 'what to do' or 'what not to do' when caring for a patient? How do we decide what to do first?" And more.

Topics:
  1. Preparing for Next Generation NCLEX® test questions
    • As a result of this activity, participants should be able to utilize the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) clinical judgment framework to inform their practice.
  2. COVID-19, the big, bad wolf. How does it affect pregnant and postpartum patients?
    • As a result of this activity, participants should be able to apply current evidence to their clinical judgment while caring for intrapartum and postpartum patients at risk for COVID-19.
  3. Recognizing the three bears in postpartum hemorrhage responses
    • As a result of this activity, participants should be able to use evidence to examine their clinical judgment and postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) team responses through a postpartum hemorrhage patient case study and review of AWHONN recommendations.
  4. What Hansel and Gretel's witch knew about diabetes and what she doesn't want us to know
    • As a result of this activity, participants should be able to translate the language of diabetes into metaphor to enhance their own understanding and extend it to patient education.
  5. The emperor's new clothes are called Sepsis. Re-visiting the Maternal Early Warning Criteria to support calling it when you see it.
    • As a result of this activity, participants should be able to more confidently recognize sepsis and reduce delays in treatment when every minute counts.

PORTS OF CALL

Miami, Florida - As far as vacation destinations go, Miami tops most sun-seekers’ lists. With its gorgeous beaches, vibrant neighborhoods and melting pot of cultures, the Magic City is the perfect place to spend a few days before your Caribbean island hop. Ahead of your cruise from Miami, jump-start your morning in true Miami style with a Cuban cafecito from a ventanita — a streetside shop window. Then climb the historic lighthouse at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park on quiet Key Biscayne before lounging on the island’s secluded sandy shores. If you’re looking for a bit more action, head to South Beach — home to world-class restaurants, nightlife, shopping and lively beaches, all set against snap-worthy Art Deco buildings. Art lovers who visit Miami can head to Wynwood and explore the neighborhood’s colorful street murals and local galleries. Or take a trip back in time at the Renaissance-style Vizcaya estate, which offers a glimpse into Miami’s dazzling past.

Key West, Florida - A distinctly American town with the look and feel of the Caribbean, Key West unlocks myriad attractions. Ride the Conch Train to the famous sights: Ernest Hemingway's home, the Audubon House, and the "Little White House", where President Truman spent many a working vacation. Hop a catamaran to America's only living coral reef to snorkel with dolphins. Or climb into the open cockpit of a World War II biplane for an unforgettable aerial tour of the Keys.

At Sea - Cruising - Cruising

Cozumel, Mexico - With its lively tropical reefs, crystal-clear waters and ancient ruins, Cozumel is ripe for one-of-a-kind adventures. Cruise to Cozumel and head to Chankanaab National Park, where you can snorkel among the colorful reefs and schools of tropical fish that give this island its premier diving status. Or travel back in time on an adventure through the towering Maya ruins of Tulum. When you’re done exploring, unwind with a beachside massage at Playa Mia. From culture savoring to soaking up sunshine, you’ll find a world of adventure waiting for you in Cozumel.
