- Neuropathic Pain.
- Musculoskeletal Pain (Myofascial pain and Fibromyalgia)
- Post-herpetic Neuralgia
- Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
- Chronic Pelvic Pain
- Interactive Problem-Based Case Discussion
- Describe and explain basic concepts of pain (acute; chronic; nociceptive; neuropathic; malignant or cancer-related) as pertinent to clinical decision making, when determining plans for management of pain in a primary care setting; determine mechanism-based therapies in cases wherein diagnosis of chronic pain is unclear. Describe the contribution of biological, psychological/emotional and social factors to the experience and behavior of pain.
- Describe and diagnose various distinct syndromes or types of pain; design multidisciplinary pain treatment plans, appropriate for each specific type of pain in a primary care setting. Apply suitable history taking techniques and carry out pertinent physical exams to evaluate patients who present with various manifestations of pain; order appropriate diagnostic tests and consultations (in the context of multidisciplinary approaches) in order to establish diagnoses and to develop reasonable comprehensive, patient-centered pain management plans.
- Apply evidence-based principles and guidelines in the rational use of opioids for malignant and non-malignant pain in a primary care setting; assess and stratify patients' risk for aberrant drug behaviors; select patients suitable for safe opioid prescriptions; monitor patients for efficacy and adverse effects. Include non-opioid analgesics in a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary pain management plan based on evidence-based and mechanism-based approaches.
- Determine, design and carry out evidence-based, safe and patient-centered therapeutic plans suitable for individual patients in pain from non-malignant or non-terminal conditions.
- Describe and adhere to the recent recommendations from the IOM Report (Relieving Pain in America: A Blueprint for Transforming Prevention, Care, Education, and Research. The National Academies Press, 2011 )
regarding:
- The moral imperative and professional responsibility of effective pain management for all patients
- The need for comprehensive approaches to prevention and management of pain
- The need for interdisciplinary approaches, assessment and treatment of pain
- The need for individualized pain care, tailored to each person's experience
- The rational use of opioids in an evidence-based, safe and effective manner
- The value of clinicians, families and patients working together
- The value of a public health and community based approach, including targeting disparities in occurrence and treatment of pain, goal of prevention and public health education
- The need for a cultural transformation on the way pain is viewed and treated
- Design and carry out evidence-based, safe and patient-centered therapeutic plans suitable for individual patients in pain from malignant or terminal conditions, or conditions at the end-of-life.
- Describe and utilize therapies for cancer pain supported by the best available evidence and/or therapies that are mechanism-based.
- Practice skills pertinent to diagnostic analysis and to designing a comprehensive, multidisciplinary treatment plan in a problem-based discussion based on a real-life-case discussion.
- Define acute and chronic spine pain. Review clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, and evidence based treatment modalities for the management of mechanical spine pain.
- Describe neuropathic pain. Discuss pathophysiological mechanisms involved in neuropathic pain. Identify various types of neuropathic pain disorders and appraise their global and individual management.
- Review painful musculoskeletal disorders, mainly myofascial pain and fibromyalgia. Focus on history and physical examination findings as well as revise multidisciplinary management including pharmacological, physical, rehabilitative, and supportive therapeutic options.
- Appraise the pathophysiology of Herpes Zoster and Postherpetic Neuralgia (PHN). Identify risk factors affecting the development of postherpetic neuralgia. Understand the effects of PHN on sleep, mood and quality of life.
- Apply evidence based principles in the management of Zoster induced chronic pain.
- Define Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, Review the types and differences of this neuropathic condition.
- Establish the diagnostic criteria as suggested by the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP). Identify para-clinical studies relevant in the diagnosis of this entity.
- Review multimodal management strategies recommended for the symptomatic and functional management of this disease.
- Establish the diagnostic criteria as suggested by the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP). Identify para-clinical studies relevant in the diagnosis of this entity. Review multimodal management strategies recommended for the symptomatic and functional management of this disease.
- Distinguish the different anatomical, physiological and psychological causes of chronic pelvic pain in men and women. Discuss pharmacological and non pharmacological treatments available for the comprehensive management of distinct painful conditions.
- Present various clinical cases of painful conditions and promote discussion with focus on diagnosis and treatment.

Professor and Chief, Division of Pain Management Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative Medicine and Pain Management, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Miami, Florida.
Dr. Sarantopoulos serves as Professor and Chief of the Division of Pain Management, and as Pain Medicine Fellowship Program Director at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine since August 2010. He has earned an MD and a PhD degree from the Medical School of the National and Capodistrian University of Athens, Greece, and a MS degree from the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He has trained as an Anesthesiologist and as a Pain Medicine Specialist at the Medical College of Wisconsin, in Milwaukee, WI, wherein he also held faculty appointments in the Departments of Anesthesiology and Pharmacology & Toxicology. He has conducted NIH-funded research on the mechanisms of neuropathic pain and neuronal ion-channels as targets for analgesia and neuroprotection.
Dr. Sarantopoulos is a clinician-scientist, an experienced board-certified pain specialist recognized by several clinical awards, including "Best Doctors in America®" since 2009, as well as by international research awards. His main clinical focus is interventional pain medicine in the context of an interdisciplinary, bio-psycho-social approach. Dr Sarantopoulos' basic research focuses in the pathophysiology and pharmacology of peripheral neuropathic pain, and his clinical research in the transition from acute to chronic pain after surgery for cancer. Dr. Sarantopoulos has developed novel techniques in studying ion channels in neurons, and he continues his research on neuronal potassium channels as pharmacological targets for neuroprotection and for analgesia. Specifically, for the past eight years, Dr. Sarantopoulos has been characterizing ATP-sensitive potassium channels in peripheral sensory neurons, and he is investigating their role in pain following peripheral nerve injury. He has also developed clinical strategies limiting the transition from acute to chronic pain after surgery for cancer. Dr Sarantopoulos' work has resulted in several peer-reviewed articles in the areas of clinical and experimental neuropathic pain, book chapters and international awards.
To date, Dr. Sarantopoulos has authored and co-authored more than 60 articles in scientific journals and books, and has as served as reviewer and/or associate editor in several biomedical journals, as well as in several committees. He has been lecturing on several topics pertinent to the management of acute and chronic pain in several national and international meetings.

TravelSafe.comPlease visit TravelSafe.com for travel insurance information.
Cruise Line cancellation policies are strictly enforced. For that reason, we urge all of our travelers to carefully consider whether travel insurance is a good value for them.
Certainly, if you have reason to think that "something might come up" that might force you to cancel, travel insurance is worth the cost of the premium. Examples we've seen in the past include ill or frail family members and changes in employment causing relocation.
If travel insurance is the right choice for you, we recommend TravelSafe. To visit their site and explore your options click here or on the link above. The cruise lines also offer travel insurance and we'd be happy to help you go that route if you'd prefer.
