Francis R. Mencl, MD, MS, FACEP, FAAEM
Professor of Emergency Medicine; Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED); Rootstown, OH
ED Staff Physician, Western Reserve Hospital Emergency Department; Cuyahoga Falls, OH
Editorial Board, Prehospital Emergency Care

A graduate of Case Western Reserve (BA), Cleveland State (MS) and NEOMED (MD), Dr. Francis Mencl has been an emergency physician for 25 years. After completing his residency in EM at Akron City Hospital (Summa Health System) he stayed on as a teaching attending until this past winter when a national contract group stepped in. At Summa, he was involved with EMS, first as associate and then as system EMS Medical Director, while also serving on several area, state and national committees and as a board of directors of the Ohio Chapter of the ACEP.

In his leadership position, he assisted the hospital in acquiring and maintaining a variety of certifications and accreditations including level 1 trauma center, STEMI and chest pain as well as stroke center. He also revamped many of the EMS protocols for area agencies and introduced many area firsts.

Dr. Menc's passions include teaching and research. He is Professor of Emergency Medicine at NEOMED and lectures frequently at various national and international venues and is on the editorial board of PEC. He reorganized the EMS curriculum for the residents and revamped EMS continuing education for the EMTs and paramedics moving to more realistic hands-on, case based and simulation training, some of which involved the local police. At the paramedic school the students now do to an overnight training at the local national park.

He also believes in translating research into practice and used some of his published work to develop best practices for his EMS agencies and Summa's STEMI program achieving significant savings in time to intervention.

For two years (2004-2006) Dr. Mencl took a sabbatical to serve as the program director of a new EM residency at the OLVG hospital in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. This provided insight into different health care systems and required considerable tact and sensitivity while dealing with a different health care system and with different medical specialties not all of whom where friendly towards the idea of emergency medicine. It also required a fair degree of humility at times!

After leaving Summa Health System Dr. Mencl continues to work in the ED but has also begun to branch out doing wound care in nursing homes and is a partner in a Subaxone clinic.

Ports of Call
Seattle, Washington (Embark) - The Emerald City of the Pacific Northwest, Seattle is one of America's most vibrant cities. Stroll its bustling waterfront (including Pike Place Market), visit the Space Needle, and find a great coffee-shop to enjoy in this coffee-loving city (the home of Starbucks). One of America's tech centers (Amazon and Microsoft are both headquartered here), the city is abuzz with the interesting people attracted to the opportunities to be found there. There is more than enough to see and do here to keep you busy for a day or two. If you have a little extra time, Seattle is a great place to visit.
Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier, Alaska - One of Alaska's lesser-known gems, Endicott Arm Fjord marks the southern edge of Fords Terror Wilderness area. As you drift through its 30 -mile-long stretch, you can't help but be awed by the sorrounding granite cliffs, mountain valleys and dozens of gushing waterfalls. Drifting icebergs, deep blue waters and a spectacular tidewater glacier only add to this natural spectacle's appeal.
Inside Passage - This is one of the most famously beautiful passages in all the world. It features virtually everything you came to Alaska hoping to see, including rain forests, glaciers, fjords and white-capped peaks. All of which create a setting that's perfect for viewing whales and sea lions.
Juneau, Alaska - In Alaska's capital, you can pan for gold at Gold Creek and taste salmon baked on an alderwood fire, mush sleddogs, flightsee the Juneau Ice Field, and walk right up to the Mendenhall Glacier at the park. This charming small city also hosts an excellent zipline course. And for the less adventurous, the Red Dog Saloon is near the dock.
Skagway, Alaska - A frontier town perfectly preserved as the Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park. Gateway to the Trail of '98, which you may explore by helicopter or vintage railcar. Port tips from our blog
Victoria, British Columbia - Stroll through the charming downtown of this very British city, with its double-decker buses, turreted castles, fine British woolens, tea and china. Or, just outside the city, visit the lush flora and fauna of Butchart Gardens.

TravelSafe.comPlease visit TravelSafe.com for travel insurance information.

Cruise Line cancellation policies are strictly enforced. For that reason, we urge all of our travelers to carefully consider whether travel insurance is a good value for them.

Certainly, if you have reason to think that "something might come up" that might force you to cancel, travel insurance is worth the cost of the premium. Examples we've seen in the past include ill or frail family members and changes in employment causing relocation.

If travel insurance is the right choice for you, we recommend TravelSafe. To visit their site and explore your options click here or on the link above. The cruise lines also offer travel insurance and we'd be happy to help you go that route if you'd prefer.
