Nov 1 | 8 -10 am | Non-Surgical Treatments for Arthritis: What Works and What Doesn't | Frischknect | Over 95% of Americans will develop degenerative joint disease at some time in their lives. Health care providers will continue to see many patients, both young and old, who complain of joint pains. Nonoperative treatments for arthritis abound. This presentation will address the myriad of current therapies now seen in the marketplace. Participants will be given the latest information on pharmacologic supplements, over the counter medications, prescription drugs, and injectables. Providers will be empowered to give appropriate information and prescribe effective treatments to their patients. |
Nov 1 | 10am-12pm | Oh My Aching Feet: Disorders of the Foot and Ankle | Frischknect | Ankle and foot disorders continue to be a common complaint of patients presenting to health care providers. These can be acute injuries or chronic pain. An understanding of ankle and foot anatomy is paramount in making correct diagnoses. This presentation reviews the anatomy in a simple and straightforward way. Appropriate physical examination techniques are demonstrated. Ankle and foot soft tissue problems are described. Fractures are demonstrated with X-rays. Current treatments and indications for referral to an orthopedist are thoroughly reviewed. Practitioners will be more confident in their ability to correctly diagnose and treat foot and ankle disorders. |

Nov 1 | 1- 3pm | What Makes Dermatology Seem So Difficult? | Monroe | All medical providers struggle with dermatology, for a number of well-known reasons. This 2 hour session discusses those reasons, most of which revolve around two issues: 1) Just like the rest of medicine, dermatology is about differential diagnoses: what could this (lesion, rash, symptom) be? And 2) it's about the fact that one is unlikely to make diagnoses they've never heard of. So, a great deal of dermatology is about getting exposed to unfamiliar diagnoses, and their related differentials. Numerous examples are provided and discussed, as are specific strategies to become more proficient in dermatology. |
Nov 1 | 3-5 pm | Cutaneous Malignancies | Monroe | Extensive coverage of sun-caused skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma, illustrating a wide range of clinical presentations with photos from my own practice of over 30 years, along with the real-life stories of the patients themselves. This section also includes most of the other kinds of "skin cancer" not related to sun exposure, such a metastatic cancer, hematologic cancers and those arising from ordinary tissue. The emphasis is on information the attendee can take back to their daily practice and use right away, and de-emphasizes the esoteric "zebras", however interesting they might be. |
Nov 3 | 8-10 am | Hip, Hip, Hooray: Orthopedic Hip Problems From Young to Old | Frischknect | Disorders of the hip are commonly seen starting in childhood, continuing through teenage years and down to old age. Among others, these include problems such as hip dysplasia, slipped capital femoral epiphysis, impingement syndrome, bursitis, tendinitis, fractures, soft tissue injuries, and arthritis. This presentation will review the diagnosis and treatments of these specific hip disease processes, and many more. Important medical history questions, examination techniques, and review of radiographs, will be extensively covered. Providers will be better able to diagnose and effectively treat patients of all ages with hip complaints. |
Nov 3 | 10am-12pm | Common Office Procedures: How Do I Do That | Frischknect | A variety of medical problems present to the primary care clinic that can often be treated without referral to a specialist. This presentation is designed to review a potpourri of common patient complaints that can be effectively treated in an office setting. These procedures will include among others: digital nerve blocks, fish hook removal, evacuation of a subungual hematoma, partial and complete ingrown toenail removal, reduction of nursemaid's elbow, abscess and felon drainage, and simple splinting techniques. Providers will learn how to perform these procedures and be confident in their ability to care for patients with these problems. |
Nov 3 | 12-1pm | Lunch on your own | - | - |
Nov 3 | 1-3pm | Skin Biopsy Principles for the Primary Care Provider | Monroe | Almost no one in primary care performs skin biopsies routinely, and there are reasons for that, as we discuss in this section. As a result, everyone, including patients and providers, are worse off, because accurate diagnoses are not made, patients go on suffering, and the providers miss a golden opportunity to build their derm skills. So, we discuss the why and how of doing skin biopsies, as well as how to process the tissue, and how to interpret the results. This section also includes the actual performance of the procedure, including the actual surgical aspects, as well as wound care and follow up. |
Nov 3 | 3-5pm | Cryosurgery in Primary Care | Monroe | Cryosurgery, the topical application of liquid nitrogen, is an extremely useful treatment modality in medicine. In this section, we discuss the various ways of applying the liquid nitrogen, what sorts of lesions to treat, how to treat them, and what lesions should not be treated this way. This discussion is appropriate even for the current user of cryosurgery units, who will learn some tips which will prove useful, and some pitfalls to be avoided. |

Cruise Line cancellation policies are strictly enforced. For that reason, we urge all of our travelers to carefully consider whether travel insurance is a good value for them.
Certainly, if you have reason to think that "something might come up" that might force you to cancel, travel insurance is worth the cost of the premium. Examples we've seen in the past include ill or frail family members and changes in employment causing relocation.
If travel insurance is the right choice for you, we recommend TravelSafe. To visit their site and explore your options click here or on the link above. The cruise lines also offer travel insurance and we'd be happy to help you go that route if you'd prefer.
