Jan Luhmann, M.D. Associate Professor of Pediatrics; Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine Research Associates’ Program
Dr. Luhmann received her undergraduate education at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. degree in Physiology. She earned her medical degree from Loyola University-Stritch School of Medicine and completed her Residency in Pediatrics at St. Louis Children's Hospital in 1994. After her residency, she completed the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship Program at Washington University School of Medicine. She became a full-time faculty member of the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at St. Louis Children's Hospital in 1996.
Dr. Luhmann's clinical and teaching duties include working as an attending physician in the Emergency Unit at St. Louis Children's Hospital where she serves as a preceptor for pediatric housestaff and medical students rotating through the unit. Dr. Luhmann is a member of the Ambulatory Pediatric Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Her research interests include sedation techniques and pain management in children in the Emergency Unit setting. Her clinical interests include pediatric emergency medicine, sedation techniques, pediatric pain management, foot trauma, and septic arthritis.
Kimberly S. Quayle, M.D., Associate Professor of Pediatrics; Medical Director Transport Services
Dr. Quayle received her undergraduate education at University of Missouri-Columbia where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with an A.B. degree in Biology. She attended Washington University School of Medicine where she received her M.D. degree in 1988 . Dr. Quayle completed her training in Pediatrics at St. Louis Children's Hospital in 1991, and then served as Chief Resident for an additional year. Following her residency, she completed a fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine. From 1994-1998, Dr. Quayle was an Instructor in the Department of Pediatrics at Washington University. She is board certified in Pediatrics and subspecialty board certified in Pediatric Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Quayle's clinical and teaching duties entail working as an attending physician in the Emergency Unit at St. Louis Children's Hospital where she serves as a preceptor for pediatric housestaff and medical students rotating through the unit. She serves as a member of the Committee on Admissions for the Medical School. Dr. Quayle's research interests include minor head injury, injury prevention, and transport medicine. An ongoing project is the development of an ecological analysis and geographic mapping of Missouri children with burn injuries.

To examine the physician’s approach to commonly encountered
medical conditions arising in children and young people
Preliminary Objectives for Activity:
On completion of this CME activity, participants should be able to:
1. Recognize common and important rashes in children
2. Review causes of limp in children
3. Review headaches in children
4. Minimize pain and distress in children in the ambulatory setting
5. Outline current strategies for management of febrile infant
6. Evaluate minor head injuries and concussion in children
7. Discuss office preparedness for pediatric emergencies
8. Review burn management in children
Conference Sessions generally take place during the days at sea (as cruise itinerary allows) to avoid conflicts with Ports of Call or evening entertainment.
