Mark Eisenberg, MD, MPH, FACC, FAHA
Dr. Eisenberg is a James McGill Professor of Medicine at McGill University and a Staff Cardiologist at the Jewish General Hospital. He is an Associate Member of the McGill Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Occupational Health. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Eisenberg is Director of the McGill MD-PhD Program, as well as Director of the Cardiovascular Health Services Research Group of the Jewish General Hospital and a Senior Investigator at the Centre for Clinical Epidemiology and Community Studies.

Dr. Eisenberg was born in Rochester, New York. He completed a BA in Chemistry in 1980 at Cornell University, followed by an MD at the University of Rochester. After completing his MD, Dr. Eisenberg did a residency in internal medicine at McGill University, a Master’s of Public Health at Harvard University, a research fellowship in echocardiography and epidemiology and a cardiology fellowship at the University of California in San Francisco. In 1995, Dr. Eisenberg completed an interventional cardiology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic.

In 2008-2009, Dr. Eisenberg spent a year in Israel as a visiting professor in the Department of Human Metabolism and Nutrition at the Joseph H. and Belle R. Braun Hebrew University, Hadassah School of Public Health and Community Medicine. During this sabbatical, he also completed an International Master’s of Health Leadership at McGill University.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Eisenberg has published over 300 articles in peer-reviewed journals and participated in multiple collaborative works. In addition, Dr. Eisenberg has authored four books.

Louise Pilote, MD

Louise Pilote, MD
Dr. Louise Pilote is a Professor of Medicine at McGill University and the Director of the Division of General Internal Medicine at McGill University. She holds a James McGill Chair and a research scholarship from the Fonds de Recherche en Santé du Quebec. She is a practicing Internist and epidemiologist at the Montreal General Hospital.

Dr. Pilote received her MDCM from McGill University. She then obtained an MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health and a PhD in Epidemiology at the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Pilote's research focus includes cardiovascular epidemiology, outcomes research, and health services research. She is the principal investigator for the GENESIS: an intercapacity enhancement team on gender and sex determinants of cardiovascular diseases funded by the Canadian Institute of Health research and the Heart and Stroke Foundation as well other studies related to access to care for patients with heart disease, and pharmacoepidemiology studies of cardiac medications. She has published over 200 manuscripts.

David Cunningham MD completed his medical training at Thomas Jefferson University as well as an Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery residency in 1984. He was in private practice in suburban Philadelphia and was an academic instructor in Otolaryngology with both the University of Pennsylvania and Thomas Jefferson until moving to North Carolina in 2001. He is presently practicing at UNC Ear Nose and Throat, associated with University of North Carolina since March of 2018 and is an associate Professor of Otolaryngology with Campbell University Medical College since 2014. He is board certified in Otolaryngology in 1984 and with subspecialty Sleep Medicine in 2008.

Vancouver, British Columbia

Vancouver is one of the few world cities where a major metropolis feels seamlessly integrated with the wilderness. The cruise terminal at Canada Place puts you directly in the heart of this stunning landscape, with soaring mountains and the Pacific Ocean framing a vibrant, walkable downtown. This prime location means many of the city's best experiences are immediately accessible, allowing for a rich and varied day ashore.

A short walk or bike ride along the waterfront leads to Stanley Park, a 1,000-acre temperate rainforest that is the city's soul. Its famous seawall offers breathtaking views of the harbor and North Shore mountains, while inland trails lead through towering cedars and firs. Don't miss the collection of First Nations totem poles at Brockton Point, a powerful and accessible cultural landmark.

For a dose of history and modern style, explore Gastown, the city's oldest neighborhood. Its Victorian architecture, cobblestone streets, and iconic steam clock now house independent boutiques, Indigenous art galleries, and some of Vancouver's most innovative restaurants and cocktail bars.

A quick, scenic ride on a False Creek Ferry or Aquabus takes you to Granville Island. Vancouver's culinary scene is a destination in itself, celebrated for its exceptional Pacific Northwest seafood and diverse Asian influences, from world-class sushi to authentic dim sum in historic Chinatown. It’s a city that rewards exploration on foot, offering a sophisticated yet refreshingly unpretentious urban experience.

Inside Passage

Ketchikan, Alaska

Ketchikan is often your first taste of Alaska, and it’s a potent one. As the self-proclaimed "Salmon Capital of the World," this bustling town is built on fishing, timber, and the rich cultural heritage of the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples. Its authenticity is its greatest asset.

From the cruise dock, you're steps away from the town's most famous sight: Creek Street. This historic boardwalk, once the city's notorious red-light district, is now a charming collection of colorful stilted houses, galleries, and shops perched over the rushing creek. It’s an essential photo-op and a delightful place for a stroll, easily explored on your own.

To truly appreciate the region's soul, seek out the magnificent totem poles. The Totem Heritage Center, a manageable walk or short taxi ride from the port, houses a stunning collection of original 19th-century poles rescued from abandoned villages. It’s a quiet, powerful museum that offers deep insight into Native Alaskan artistry and tradition. For a more expansive outdoor setting, Totem Bight State Historical Park is another excellent choice, though it requires a short tour or taxi ride.

While the town is engaging, Ketchikan’s grandeur lies in the surrounding wilderness. For a truly unforgettable day, a floatplane or boat tour into the Misty Fjords National Monument is an unparalleled experience. These glacier-carved cliffs and serene waters are the Alaska you've dreamed of. For a more accessible nature fix, you can often spot salmon fighting their way upstream at the Ketchikan Creek fish ladder right in town during the summer season. Ketchikan is compact and can feel busy, but by focusing on either its rich cultural core or the spectacular nature at its doorstep, you'll find it a deeply rewarding port of call.

Juneau, Alaska

Juneau is a quintessential Alaskan port, a capital city uniquely isolated by wilderness and accessible only by air or sea. This isolation is its charm, creating a place where dramatic nature is always the main event. The undisputed star is the Mendenhall Glacier, a magnificent river of ice just a short drive from the docks. The visitor center provides spectacular views, but for a truly memorable experience, we recommend a helicopter tour that lands you directly on the glacier itself—an investment, but one that pays dividends in awe.

Beyond the glacier, Juneau is one of Alaska’s premier whale-watching destinations. The nutrient-rich waters of the Inside Passage are a summer feeding ground for humpback whales, and sightings are exceptionally common. For a different perspective, the Mount Roberts Tramway, which departs right from the cruise ship dock, whisks you 1,800 feet up for panoramic views of the Gastineau Channel and the surrounding Tongass National Forest.

The downtown area is compact, historic, and easily explored on foot. While it can be bustling with fellow cruisers, it’s worth a stroll down South Franklin Street to see the preserved architecture. For a dose of culture, the Alaska State Museum offers a superb collection of Native Alaskan and pioneer history. While the famous Red Dog Saloon is a lively and historic stop, for a more authentic taste of Juneau, seek out a local salmon bake. Juneau delivers exactly what you hope for in Alaska: breathtaking scenery and wildlife encounters that feel both grand and accessible.

Skagway, Alaska

Skagway is less a town and more a time capsule, meticulously preserved from the fever dream of the Klondike Gold Rush. As you step off the ship, you’re immediately immersed in its history. The main event is the historic downtown, a district of wooden boardwalks and false-front buildings so authentic it’s part of a National Historical Park. While compact and easily walkable, its charm is genuine. You can spend an hour or two exploring Broadway Street, popping into the Red Onion Saloon for a dose of colorful history, or visiting the Corrington Museum of Alaskan History.

However, to truly appreciate Skagway, you must see it as a gateway. The town itself is the prologue; the main story unfolds in the surrounding wilderness. The undisputed star attraction is the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad. This is not a simple scenic ride; it’s a vintage, narrow-gauge train that climbs nearly 3,000 feet in 20 miles, clinging to mountainsides and crossing dizzying trestles. The engineering is as breathtaking as the views of glaciers, gorges, and waterfalls. We consider this one of Alaska’s essential experiences.

For those seeking more active pursuits, Skagway delivers. Helicopter tours can land you on a glacier for a dog-sledding adventure, offering a perspective few ever witness. You can also hike a portion of the legendary Chilkoot Trail or take a high-speed catamaran down the Lynn Canal, North America's longest and deepest fjord. Our advice: Plan on one major excursion. Skagway’s in-town appeal is real but finite; its true value lies in the spectacular adventures that begin at its doorstep.

Glacier Bay

Glacier Bay is not a port of call in the traditional sense; it is a destination for profound immersion. There are no docks, no towns, and no excursions here. Instead, the day is dedicated to a slow, deliberate journey into the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, experienced entirely from the decks of your vessel. As the ship enters the bay, National Park Rangers come aboard to provide expert narration, transforming a scenic cruise into a rich educational experience. Their commentary on geology, glaciology, and native Tlingit history adds invaluable context to the staggering landscapes unfolding around you.

The 65-mile journey up the fjord reveals a world in constant, dramatic change. You’ll pass forested shorelines where brown bears and mountain goats can sometimes be spotted, and rocky outcrops where puffins and other seabirds nest. The true spectacle, however, awaits at the bay's terminus. Here, you will spend hours in the presence of massive tidewater glaciers like Margerie and Grand Pacific. The experience is multi-sensory: the sight of the impossibly blue ice, the crisp, clean air, and the deep silence, punctuated only by the thunderous crack of calving ice. Witnessing a skyscraper-sized block of ice shear off a glacier's face and crash into the sea is a humbling, unforgettable display of nature's power. Keep a keen eye on the water for humpback whales, orcas, and harbor seals resting on floating ice floes. A day in Glacier Bay is a meditative encounter with a raw, primordial world.

College Fjord

Whittier, Alaska

Whittier is less a destination in itself and more a dramatic gateway to the glacial wonders of Prince William Sound. The town is a fascinating quirk of Alaskan history, a compact, functional port where nearly all residents live in a single high-rise building—a remnant of its past as a Cold War military outpost accessed by a 2.5-mile, one-lane tunnel.

The true reason for a stop here is to board a smaller vessel and venture into the Sound. These excursions navigate through deep fjords to the face of massive tidewater glaciers, such as those in Blackstone Bay or Harriman Fjord. The experience is auditory as much as visual, with the thunderous crack of calving ice echoing across the water. Keep a constant watch for abundant wildlife, including sea otters floating in "rafts," harbor seals hauled out on ice floes, bald eagles, and the occasional whale.

While the town's unique structure is worth a brief look, the most rewarding use of your time is a boat tour into the pristine, glacier-carved wilderness that lies just beyond the harbor.
