Southampton (London), England - A Southampton round-trip cruise offers the ultimate flexibility to frame your voyage with the dazzling experiences of London – whether before or after your cruise (or both), London is well worth two or three days' discovery. As Samuel Johnson famously quipped "When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life" and a couple days there will vividly demonstrate just how much life this incredible city affords. You could kickstart your adventure by exploring the ancient Tower of London, an iconic fortress steeped in over 900 years of history. Imagine witnessing the breathtaking Crown Jewels and listening to the captivating tales of its Yeoman Warders. Or perhaps an evening at a spectacular West End show, like the beloved "Mamma Mia!" or the visually stunning "Frozen the Musical."
And London's allures are just beginning. Perhaps a leisurely visit to the world-renowned British Museum is in order, where you can explore millennia of human history, from ancient Egyptian artifacts to classical Greek sculptures. For a different kind of cultural immersion, consider the vibrant atmosphere and artistic treasures of Tate Modern on the South Bank.
Food lovers can delight in the culinary smorgasbord at Borough Market, one of London's oldest and largest food markets, sampling everything from artisanal cheeses to international street food. Or consider Spitalfields Market, which blends food vendors with clothing, jewelry, home items, and art, with a more diverse and trendy atmosphere. For those seeking immersive retail therapy, the iconic yellow bags of Selfridges or the mock-Tudor charm of Liberty London offer unique and luxurious shopping experiences.
And, of course, a visit to London wouldn't be complete without experiencing the grandeur of Buckingham Palace, perhaps timing your visit to see the famous Changing the Guard ceremony or, if visiting between July and September, the magnificent State Rooms during their Summer Opening.
And note that London's excellent transport links make exploring it in conjunction with your cruise easier than you imagine; getting around London itself is exceptionally easy with "The Tube," the city's extensive Underground network. Simply use your contactless credit/debit card or mobile payment for hassle-free travel. And airport to London transport can also be a seamless affair: if arriving by air, Heathrow Airport connects swiftly to Paddington Station via the Heathrow Express (around 15 minutes) , while Gatwick Airport has the Gatwick Express to Victoria Station (around 30 minutes). And getting to and from London to Southampton can also be easy via rail; easier still if you choose a hotel near Waterloo Station from which direct and frequent train services depart for Southampton Central (a journey of about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes). Waterloo is also a major Tube interchange, making all of London's attractions readily accessible. When you arrive at Southampton Central, a short taxi ride takes you to your cruise terminal. This effortless connectivity means you can easily add a London chapter to either end of your cruise. Let London be the brilliant beginning, the perfect ending, or the sparkling jewel framing your unforgettable cruise experience.
Of course, if trains are not your cup of tea, so to speak, one of our agents can arrange transfers with an excellent company we've wroked with for years. Let us help you plan your stay in London.
At Sea - Cruising - Cruising
Vigo, Spain - Catholic pilgrims flock to the nearby sacred cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, built over the burial spot of St. James. In Vigo, Galicia province's most populated city, El Sireno, a gilded sculpture depicting a half-man-half-sea-creature, towers over your head and the city's lovely gardens and well-preserved historical buildings.
Lisbon, Portugal - Make your own discoveries in the city that launched the Age of Discovery. Cross the River Tagus on its soaring suspension bridge. Wander the maze of streets in the Alfama, the old Moorish quarter, dominated by the medieval Castle of St. George where peacocks strut and shriek. Stroll the Baixa, shop for elegant shoes.
Porto Leixoes, Portugal - Visit this city once and you are sure to want to come back for more. Located in northern Portugal, the city spreads across the base of a forested valley with crimson peaks on its sides. While it is famous for its Port wine, Porto is also home to many attractions including the Réserve Naturelle de Scandola, the marine reservation protected by UNESCO with amazing Calanques.
La Coruna, Spain - La Coruna has tons to offer the curious traveler. You can explore the delightful region of Spain known as Galacia, see a Roman lighthouse built in the second century which is still in use today, and glimpse La Coruna'a ancient past in the celtic stone monoliths. Appreciaters of nature can look out over the verdant countryside, small coves, and magnificent coastlines.
Bilbao, Spain - Bilbao, Spain's sixth-largest city, is being revitalized with the help of astounding strides in art and architecture. New life arrived in this commercial/industrial hub via the astonishing Bilbao Guggenheim Museum; the new, sleek glass and steel tube metro system; and the stunning glass-decked parabolic arch footbridge above the Nervion River. Bilbao also provides an excellent home base from which to explore the diverse Basque country, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pyrenees.
Paris (Le Havre), France - Paris, a melange of the artistic and sublime with a worldwide reputation for excellence in cuisine, fashion, architecture and the fine arts. After the two and a half hour drive from the port, you'll begin your exploration of one of the world's great cities. Walk beneath monumental landmarks: Pass through the Arc de Triomphe, the Eiffel Tower, and see the soaring gothic architecture of Notre Dame. Find a small bistro and enjoy an amazing lunch. Peruse incredible art at the Louvre or other top rate museums and galleries. At evening, walk the lamplit avenues as restaurants' wooden tables and rattan chairs spill onto the sidewalks and terraces. Pull up a seat, order a glass of vin rouge and a plate of pate on toast, and savor the City of Lights.
