He earned dual bachelor's degrees in biology and health sciences, a master's degree in physiology, and his medical degree. Prior to medical school, he worked as a Certified Physician Assistant. He completed his residency in primary care internal medicine and remains deeply committed to medical education, actively teaching medical, physician assistant, and nurse practitioner students, as well as internal medicine residents. Dr. Kagan serves as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Frank H. Netter School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University, and holds courtesy faculty status at the Yale School of Nursing.
A Certified Medical Director (CMD) by the Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine (PALTmed), Dr. Kagan has extensive leadership experience across specialized care settings. He serves as the medical director for several group homes and has previously directed skilled nursing facilities, home health agencies, and hospice programs, having formerly held board certification in Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine. Frequently consulted by his peers regarding practice management and the business of medicine, Dr. Kagan serves on the Editorial Board of Medical Economics. He consults for attorneys, insurance, pharmaceutical, and wealth management companies, and acts as an expert witness for plaintiff and defense malpractice cases, as well as for the Connecticut Department of Public Health. A recipient of the Vincent J. McClain, MD Professional Service Award, he previously served as a Professional Director with HAVEN, advocating for and monitoring impaired health professionals. Nathan D. Wong, PhD, MPH, FACC, FAHA, FNLA, FASPC, is a cardiovascular epidemiologist and specialist in preventive cardiology. He is a Professor of Medicine and the Director of the Heart Disease Prevention Program within the Division of Cardiology at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). He also holds joint appointments as a Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Joe C. Wen School of Population & Public Health at UCI, and as an Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology at UCLA. He earned his BA in Biochemistry from Pomona College and his MPH and PhD degrees in Epidemiology from Yale University.
A globally recognized leader in his field, Dr. Wong currently serves as the President of the Interamerican Heart Foundation. He is a Past President of both the American Society for Preventive Cardiology (ASPC) and the Pacific Lipid Association. Additionally, he is an elected Academician of the Republic of Srpska Academy of Sciences and Arts and a Full Professor of the European Center for Peace and Development.
Dr. Wong’s primary research focuses on the epidemiology of subclinical atherosclerosis—particularly vascular calcification—as well as lipid and diabetes management. He has served as a funded investigator and CT reading center co-director for major collaborative groups, including the NIH-sponsored Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) and the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study. A prolific scholar, he has authored over 400 peer-reviewed manuscripts and co-edited seven textbooks, including the Braunwald Companion on Preventive Cardiology and two editions of the ASPC Manual on Preventive Cardiology.
Throughout his career, Dr. Wong has been honored with numerous prestigious awards. Most recently, he received the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award in Clinical Research from the UCI School of Medicine and the 2021 Joseph Stokes III, MD, Lifetime Achievement Award in Preventive Cardiology from the ASPC. He is also a recipient of the Jan Kellerman Memorial Award for Achievement in Preventive Cardiology and is listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World.

Practical Arrival and Logistics
The drive between Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Port Canaveral takes approximately 45 to 50 minutes via SR-528 (The Beachline Expressway). We strongly recommend a rental car if you plan to explore Winter Park or the Kennedy Space Center, as it offers the freedom to move between districts without relying on surging ride-share prices. Traffic in the greater Orlando area, particularly on I-4, is notoriously heavy; always pad your travel times by 30 minutes. For accommodations, consider splitting your stay: book your first night in the upscale enclave of Winter Park or the modern Lake Nona area, and your final pre-cruise night closer to the port in Cocoa Beach or Cape Canaveral.
Day 1 — Winter Park and Culinary Exploration
Skip the neon lights of International Drive and head 50 minutes west of the port to Winter Park. This historic, affluent enclave offers a European-style pacing that provides a stark contrast to the region's theme parks. Center your afternoon on Park Avenue, a cobblestone thoroughfare lined with independent boutiques and canopy oaks. Visit the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, which houses the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany, including his stunning chapel interior from the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. Afterward, take the Scenic Boat Tour for an hour-long cruise through the Winter Park Chain of Lakes, navigating narrow, hand-dug canals past historic estates.

Day 2 — Kennedy Space Center and Coastal Decompression
Drive east to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. This is an active launch facility and a living museum of aerospace history, not a typical theme park. Arrive at opening (9:00 AM) and allocate a full, unhurried day. Begin with the Space Shuttle Atlantis exhibit; the theatrical reveal of the orbiter is genuinely moving. Walk beneath the massive Saturn V rocket in the Apollo/Saturn V Center to grasp the sheer scale of the F-1 engines. We also recommend Gateway: The Deep Space Launch Complex, focusing on commercial spaceflight. Visit the Turks & Caicos National Museum to delve into the area's rich maritime history, including the famous Molasses Reef Wreck.
For underwater enthusiasts, Grand Turk is legendary. The island is renowned for its dramatic wall diving, where the reef plummets thousands of feet just offshore, creating a vibrant ecosystem accessible even to snorkelers. An excursion to Gibbs Cay offers an unforgettable, gentle encounter with friendly southern stingrays in shallow, turquoise water. This 500-year-old walled city is a UNESCO World Heritage site best explored independently on foot, allowing you to bypass crowded bus tours and move at your own pace.
Your priority should be the two massive citadels guarding the coast. Start at Castillo San Cristóbal, the largest Spanish fortification in the New World, before walking the scenic coastal trail to the iconic Castillo San Felipe del Morro. The sheer scale of these defenses is humbling, and the expansive green lawn leading to El Morro—often dotted with kites—provides a dramatic contrast to the deep blue Atlantic.
Between the forts lies a grid of blue cobblestone streets (adoquines) lined with vibrant colonial architecture. The joy here is aimless wandering, though the heat can be intense; stay hydrated and wear sturdy walking shoes to navigate the hills. For a cultural pause, visit the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista, the resting place of Ponce de León.
Culinary exploration is essential. Skip the generic tourist traps near the pier and head deeper into the city. Seek out mofongo (garlicky mashed plantains) at a local staple like El Jibarito or Café Puerto Rico. While the nearby beaches of Condado are beautiful, they require a taxi and contend with traffic. Unless you have visited before, we advise dedicating your day entirely to the history and atmosphere within the city walls, finishing perhaps with a Piña Colada at Barrachina, right in the heart of the old town.
Philipsburg, St. Maarten

St. Maarten offers a unique geopolitical curiosity: a 37-square-mile island divided between the Netherlands and France. While the cruise pier in Philipsburg (the Dutch side) is often crowded with multiple mega-ships, the island’s dual personality allows for a highly customizable day if you plan strategically.
Philipsburg itself is the commercial engine. Front Street is lined with duty-free jewelry and electronics stores; while convenient for shoppers, it can feel somewhat manufactured. For a more relaxed immediate option, the boardwalk along Great Bay offers decent beach bars and a view of the ships, though the water clarity here lags behind the rest of the island.
To experience the island's true charm, cross the border to the French side (St. Martin). The atmosphere shifts perceptibly in the capital of Marigot, with its open-air markets and colonial architecture. For the sophisticated traveler, the village of Grand Case is the highlight. Known as the culinary capital of the Caribbean, it features exceptional French-Creole cuisine in open-air "lolos" (local barbecue stands) and high-end bistros alike.
Regarding beaches, you have distinct choices:
Maho Beach offers the famous, adrenaline-fueled spectacle of jumbo jets landing just overhead at Princess Juliana International Airport—it is noisy, crowded, and absolutely unique.
For a classic European beach day, head to Orient Bay on the French side for white sand and upscale beach clubs.
A critical note on logistics: Traffic on St. Maarten can be notoriously heavy, particularly in the late afternoon. If venturing to the French side, allow ample buffer time for the return trip to the Philipsburg cruise terminal.

TRIP CANCELLATION
