Program Purpose / Objectives
The Purpose of this CME activity is to review the diagnosis and management of medical conditions encountered by Family Physicians. Primary care practitioners will be updated on current diagnostic and screening tests, treatments, and controversies of common diseases and conditions. Case studies will be used to provide clinical examples. Ethical dilemmas will also be discussed, along with the use of humor in medicine.

Preliminary Objectives for activity. At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Screen men for low testosterone
  • Identify Mechanisms relating insulin resistance and atherogenic dyslipidemia
  • Identify signs and symptoms of thyroid dysfunction as well as management
  • Utilize tools for identifying patients at risk for developing metabolic syndrome
  • Apply knowledge on osteoporosis treatments to practice
  • Identify patients with inadequate glycemic control
  • Utilize best practice guidelines for glycemic control
  • Identify appropriate use of humor in medicine
  • Utilize a practical approach to the diagnosis of dementia
  • Make appropriate medication choices for chronic and/or acute pain
  • Discuss the scope of the prescription drug abuse problem
  • Identify when to discuss DNR and palliative care with a patient and families
  • Discuss the effects of healthcare reform
Conference Sessions generally take place on days at sea (as itinerary allows), giving you plenty of time to enjoy your meals, evenings and ports of call with your companion, family and friends.

Faculty
David Weiland, Jr, MD, Vice President Medical Affairs, Bayfront Medical Center,

Dr. David Weiland, M.D. is a graduate of Amherst College and Columbia University and serves as Vice President of Medical Affairs at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Florida. At Bayfront, he works closely with the medical staff where he combines physician feedback with strategy, technology and innovation to set standards in hospital-based care. He has more than a decade of experience as a medical educator, formerly serving as assistant director of Bayfront's Family Practice Residency Program. He also served as the Medical Director for the Suncoast Hospice in Pinellas County Florida.

He completed his medical training at the University of South Florida and served as Chief Resident of internal medicine before entering private practice in 1992. He continues to present and publish nationally on a series of Palliative Care and other medical issues. He is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Recently, he has promoted the integration of palliative care consult services into Pinellas county community hospitals to increase the access of pain and symptom management services to those struggling with chronic life threatening illnesses.


Roland LaJoie, MD, Endocrinologist, St. Petersburg, Florida

Dr. Lajoie has been a physician specializing in Endocrinology for twenty-seven years. He went to medical school at the Universite De Liege in Liege, Belgium. He did his internship and residency at Norwalk General Hospital in Norwalk, CT. He completed his Fellowship at George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC.
