Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, the participant should be able to:
  • Understand the import/impact of palliative care and why it’s such a ‘hot’ health economic topic
  • Understand the difference between palliative care and hospice. Also to understand where they intersect to be able to apply these types of services earlier
  • Use some basic tools to enhance their skill with advanced care planning/advanced care directives
  • Make better choices in the managing pain in palliative and EOL patients
  • Identify earlier the pts with COPD, CHF, and ESRD who are appropriate for palliative consultation and who would benefit from palliative services
  • Better manage EOL symptoms without undertreatment of needed targets particularly pain and comfort parameters
  • Understand enough about the Medicare Hospice Benefit that they are able to access it more effectively and at an earlier stage for the benefit of their patients
  • Describe quality improvement approaches to improve their practice
  • Generally determine the mental status of patients with varying degrees of impairment
  • Describe an approach to patients with altered mental status
  • Explain to a patient or family member the post-stroke prognosis and treatment plan

Dr Mills is a board certified internist and palliative care specialist with over 35 years of medical experience and practice. He practiced for many years both clinically and with administrative positions at the former Fallon Clinic/Fallon Community Health System. It was here that he built a strong interest in and knowledge of the impact of health care systems and economics on the delivery of care. In these various rolls, he became a strong advocate for physician education to assist the evolution of the care models necessary for success in the developing health care market.

Dr Mills's extensive work in geriatrics in his clinical practice led to his growth in palliative and hospice medicine. Taking on a medical directorship at a local hospice, he gained practical knowledge of this field and went on to complete additional study in this area leading to his successful completion of board certification in 2008.

He is a zealous proponent of interactive learning processes and enjoys leading/mentoring invigorated medical education forums. He has lectured and taught broadly at both a community/ lay level, medical school level , residency/fellow level and at attending level of audience.

Dr. Kaufman graduated from Boston University, majoring in mathematics, and from Boston University School of Medicine. He completed his medical internship at Presbyterian Hospital at Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco (now California Pacific Medical Center) and his Neurology residency at Boston City Hospital (now Boston Medical Center). He then joined Fallon Clinic (now Reliant Medical Group) in Worcester, Massachusetts. From 1988 through 1996 he was Medical Director of Fallon Community Health Plan. In 1997 he became Executive Director of the Lifespan/Physicians Professional Services Organization, a position he recently left, and joined the faculty at Brown. He continues his clinical teaching activities at the Alpert Medical School and Rhode Island Hospital.

Dr. Kaufman is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and active with the Academy, currently chairing the Payment Policy Sub-committee, the Value of Neurology Work Group, and the Payment Alternatives Team. He serves on the Medical Economics and Management Committee and the Quality and Safety Sub-committee. He is also serving or has served on many other professional boards and committees.

Dr. Kaufman's interests include physician advocacy, quality improvement in medical practice, provide-payer interaction, and clinical teaching.

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy (Embark and Debark) - Ah, the Eternal City: Romance, culture, food, history and fashion. You'll have to plan your time carefully as the sights of Rome are captivating and seemingly endless: the Colosseum and Forum, the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain and, of course the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel.You can't fit it all in one day (or even a week, to be honest). Be sure to spend at least a couple days enjoying the many pleasures Rome has to offer before and/or after your cruise conference.
Athens (Piraeus), Greece - You'll climb the Acropolis, the site of ancient Athens, crowned by the immortal Parthenon. Its chiseled columns were raised by Pericles, Athens's great general. Rest your running shoes in the temple of Nike. A little shopping and souvlaki in the Plaka and you're practically an (ancient) Athenian!
Kusadasi (Ephesus), Turkey - Ephesus, one of the world's finest archeological sites, awaits. Here you will walk the Arcadian Way, view the facade of the Library of Celsus and visit the Amphitheatre.
Messina, Sicily - A beautiful sheltered harbor is your gateway to Taormina, a small town at heart despite its major tourist attraction: the sublime Teatro Greco, offering panoramic views of the coastline and snow-capped Mt. Etna.
Mykonos, Greece - For pure Mediterranean pizzazz, Mykonos can't be beat. Designer boutiques and beautifully bronzed Greek gods and goddesses lie on Mykonos' beaches. And Mykonos' famous five white churches look down on it all in oblivious serenity.
Naples, Italy - Capital of Southern Italy, the largest city of Campania, Naples is the third most populated city in Italy (after Rome and Milan), with over a million inhabitants, and is the most important industrial center and trading port for the South. Naples itself can provide a day's fun and entertainment, if its somewhat rundown appearance doesn't dissuade you. Or, join a tour of incredible Pompeii, frozen in time since A.D. 79 when Mt. Vesuvius brought an end to that then-thriving city. Or, take a quick ferry across the bay to the flowery Isle of Capri. Or, (yes, there's more) visit fabulous Sorrento, vacation spot for the well to do.
Rhodes, Greece - The crusader Knights of St. John made Rhodes their headquarters. Explore the massive fortress of the Palace of Grand Masters, and peer into tiny rooms of the Inns which once housed the knights. See where the towering Colossus of Rhodes once stood -- it could be seen for miles at sea!
Santorini, Greece - The view from the top of Santorini is breathtaking. The harbor below is said to be the site of the lost city of Atlantis! Visit the ruins of Akrotiri and discover a recently unearthed Minoan town which was extinguished by a volcanic cataclysm in 1500 B.C.
