Program Purpose / Objectives

Objectives: This series of lectures is designed to familiarize participants with issues facing travelers to developing countries, review the clinical aspects of common tropical diseases seen in travelers and to introduce concepts in Global Health. Upon completion of the seminar participants should be able to provide pre-travel evaluation and preparation of a traveler, recognize and manage common diseases acquired by travelers, and identify issues in Global Health. This seminar will be of interest to family practitioners, internists and other physicians and health professionals who provide medical advice and/or health services to travelers.

Faculty
John D. Shanley, M.D., MPH
Dr. John Shanley received his MD at UCLA in 1971. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at UCLA in 1976. During that time he spent two years as a Research Associate with the NIH, NIAID at the Pacific Research Section in Honolulu (1973-1975). He completed a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at UCLA in 1978.

He joined the Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine at the University of Iowa as Assistant Professor in 1978. In 1982, he then joined the Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine at the University of Connecticut in Farmington Connecticut as Associate Professor. In 1991 he became the director and the fellowship director of the Division of Infectious Diseases.

In 1993 he was awarded the Connecticut State Chair in Infectious Disease which he held until his retirement in 2007. He continued as part time faculty and was appointed Professor Emeritus. He also completed a Masters in Public Health in 2007.

In February, 2008 he joined the department of Preventive Medicine at the Stony Brook school of Medicine, Stony Brook, N.Y. as a Professor and became Associate Dean for International Programs in June, 2008. In January of 2009, he became Associate Director of the Graduate program in Public Health. He currently runs an outpatient program in Travel Medicine and Adult Vaccination through Preventive Medicine.

Dr. Shanley is active in the teaching Programs for the school of Medicine and the Graduate Program in Public Health. He is an active member of a number of professional societies including the Infectious Disease Society of America, the International Society of Travel Medicine, the International Society for Infectious Disease and the American Society for tropical Medicine and Hygiene.

The School of Medicine, State University of New York at Stony Brook, is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The School of Medicine, State University of New York at Stony Brook designates this activity for a maximum of 14 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Cape Liberty (Bayonne), NJ - Cape Liberty Cruise Port is located on the New York Harbor in Bayonne, New Jersey, and is just seven miles from New York City and three miles from Newark Liberty International Airport. Its waterfront location and convenience to the Big Apple allows visitors easy access to everything New York City has to offer along with providing visitors access to the historic roots of Northern New Jersey. Convenient guest parking is located adjacent to the cruise terminal.

Sample typical island food and stroll through the shops and museums of the Royal Naval Dockyard, an impressive military fortress built in 1815. Sail the clear waters of Hamilton Sound.
