Robert T. Brodell, MD, FAAD, FRCP(Edin), is a Tenured Professor of Dermatology and Pathology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). He previously served as the institution's Founding Chair of the Department of Dermatology, Chair of the Department of Pathology, and the Billy S. Guyton, MD, Distinguished Professor. A graduate of Washington and Jefferson College and the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, he completed his dermatology and dermatopathology training at Barnes Hospital (Washington University in St. Louis). Prior to his academic tenure, he was in solo private practice for 27 years in Warren, Ohio.

Affectionately known as "Dr. Bob," he is a dedicated educator and researcher who has delivered over 2,000 lectures and directed dozens of symposia. He has produced over 470 publications—almost exclusively co-authored with medical students and residents—along with more than 50 book chapters and 100 poster presentations. He is the author of three books: The Diagnosis and Treatment of Warts: An Evidence-Based Approach, Tips and Tricks in Procedural Dermatology, and Dermatology in Rural Settings — Organizational, Clinical, and Socioeconomic Perspectives.

Dr. Brodell is a highly respected national leader in his field. He has served as President of the American Board of Dermatology and the American Dermatological Association, and serves as the President-Elect of the Noah Worcester Dermatological Society. He has also been the Editor-in-Chief of Practice Update: Dermatology and an Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. His extensive contributions have been recognized with numerous accolades, including the Dermatology Foundation Practitioner of the Year Award, the American Association of Medical Colleges Humanism in Medicine Award, the International League of Dermatological Societies’ Certificate of Appreciation for Humanitarian Dermatology, and a 2026 Presidential Citation Award from the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery.

Dr. Amy Flischel is a US Navy veteran physician who currently serves as a Professor of Dermatology, Lead Physician for Inpatient Dermatology, and Director of Clinics at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Washington and Jefferson College and her medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, where she graduated Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Flischel completed a preliminary medicine internship at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, followed by a dermatology residency at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, where she served as Chief Resident.

Before joining the faculty at the University of Mississippi, Dr. Flischel served as a dermatologist in the United States Navy at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, where she was the Assistant Residency Program Director. She later served as Section Chief at the CAPT James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago, Illinois. A dedicated educator and mentor to medical students and residents, Dr. Flischel has received multiple teaching awards throughout her military and academic careers. She has directed numerous symposia, taught at regional and national meetings, and authored over 20 publications in peer-reviewed dermatology journals.

Stephen E. Helms, MD, FAAD

Professor of Dermatology, University of Mississippi Medical Center

Dr. Stephen E. Helms brings more than 40 years of dermatological experience to his role as Professor of Dermatology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC), which he joined in 2013 following 35 years of private practice in Warren, Ohio. Board-certified in dermatology since 1978, Dr. Helms earned his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and completed his dermatology residency at the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Helms’s clinical and academic interests center on occupational dermatology, contact dermatitis, and patient safety, particularly the prevention of medical errors. With a strong commitment to medical education, he previously taught medical students and dermatology residents at Northeast Ohio Medical University and Case Western Reserve University College of Medicine. A Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, Dr. Helms has delivered more than 330 invited lectures at professional meetings across the United States. He has participated as an investigator in numerous clinical trials, serves as a journal reviewer for multiple publications, and has authored or co-authored over 60 scientific publications, including dozens of journal articles and medical textbook chapters.

Outside of his clinical and academic work, Dr. Helms enjoys fishing, reading, and watching classic movies, but his favorite pastime is traveling with his wife, their two children, and their extended families.

Jeremy D. Jackson, MD

Originally from Meridian, MS, Dr. Jackson attended Mississippi State University where he was a four-year letterman in baseball with the Bulldogs and led MSU to back-to-back College World Series in 1997 and 1998.

He was named Academic All-American in 1997 and 1998 and was the Southeastern Conference male scholar-athlete of the year award in 1998. Drafted by the Kansas City Royals in 1998, he was later traded to the New York Mets where he finished his minor league career. He moved back to Mississippi and enrolled at University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 2002. After completing an Internal Medicine Residency, he served an additional year as Chief Resident of Internal Medicine before completing a dermatology residency at the University of Alabama in Birmingham.

Dr. Jackson has served on the faculty since 2013 and as Chairperson since 2021. His subspecialty interests are hospitalist dermatology, complex medical dermatology, and cutaneous lymphoma. He also serves as Director of Clinics in the Department of Dermatology.

Nancye McCowan, MD

Nancye McCowan, MD, is a Professor of Dermatology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. She served as the institution's inaugural Dermatology Residency Program Director until 2024, during which time her program received a "notable practice" designation in 2013 and a commendation from the ACGME in 2016.

Dr. McCowan attended Rhodes College before earning her medical degree from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (AOA), where she also completed her dermatology residency. Following her training, she served in the United States Air Force and held academic positions at the University of Arkansas and the University of Nebraska before moving to Mississippi. Throughout her career, she has been deeply involved in medical education, providing bedside and didactic instruction and mentoring scores of medical students.

A frequently recognized physician, Dr. McCowan has been listed among America’s Top Dermatologists and Best Doctors on numerous occasions. She has authored 16 book chapters and peer-reviewed articles, and she has presented at dozens of regional and national meetings. She also represented the UMMC Department of Dermatology on the "Southern Remedy" syndicated radio broadcast. Outside of her medical practice, Dr. McCowan is an accomplished equestrienne who has won a host of championships and top-five finishes in regional and national competitions over the past two decades.

It seems nothing can dampen the spirits in the city where the good times roll, the jazz is cool, and the food is hot. Because this voyage sails round-trip from New Orleans, you have the perfect excuse to extend your vacation on either end of your cruise. Get in on the action in the world-famous Vieux Carré—better known as the French Quarter—with its Dixieland sounds and Bourbon Street banter. Tour the charming, oak-lined Garden District, savor world-class Creole cuisine, or simply enjoy a relaxing stroll along the mighty Mississippi.

At Sea - Cruising

Cozumel, Mexico

Cozumel requires a strategic approach to bypass the commercial density of the immediate port area and access the island’s genuine natural splendor. As the gateway to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef—the second-largest reef system in the world—the island’s primary allure lies beneath the surface. For divers and snorkelers, the drift dives at Palancar and Colombia reefs offer exceptional visibility and vibrant marine life. For a land-based alternative that avoids the masses, we recommend renting a jeep to explore the 'Wild Side' (the uninhabited east coast). This rugged shoreline offers a serene escape dotted with small, open-air reggae bars and crashing waves, providing a stark, beautiful contrast to the busy west coast.

A critical note regarding Mayan history: While the famous mainland sites of Tulum and Coba are spectacular, visiting them requires a 45-minute ferry to Playa del Carmen followed by a bus ride. This logistical commitment consumes your entire day and introduces transit stress. Unless these specific sites are non-negotiable, we advise remaining on the island. You can visit the smaller, on-island ruins of San Gervasio to satisfy historical curiosity without the risk of missing the ship.

If your goal is relaxation, Cozumel’s beach clubs are highly developed, ranging from high-energy all-inclusives to sophisticated, quiet retreats where the focus is on service and tranquility. When dining in the main town of San Miguel, avoid the waterfront tourist strip. Instead, walk three to four blocks inland to find authentic family-run cantinas serving excellent cochinita pibil and fresh ceviche at a fraction of the tourist prices. Cozumel is a polished tourism machine, but by focusing on the reef, the east coast, or a high-end beach club, you can curate a sophisticated and restorative experience.

Roatan, Honduras

Roatan's primary draw is its immediate access to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, which hugs the shoreline. You don't need a long boat ride to see marine life here; world-class snorkeling often requires nothing more than wading in from the beach. For divers and snorkelers, this is arguably the premier stop in the Western Caribbean, offering high-visibility access to vibrant coral gardens.

Beyond the reef, the island offers two distinct experiences. West Bay is the quintessential Caribbean postcard—powder-white sands and calm turquoise waters—though expect significant crowds at the resorts. For a more authentic atmosphere, head to the neighboring West End village. It offers a bohemian mix of dive shops, open-air bars, and artisan stalls. Grab a fresh baleada, the thick flour tortilla staple of Honduran street food, while walking the strip.

Inland, the most popular excursions involve the island’s wildlife sanctuaries. Interactions with capuchin monkeys and sloths at places like Gumbalimba Park or Daniel Johnson's Monkey and Sloth Hang Out have become signature experiences, offering genuine engagement for animal lovers.

Ships dock at either the town of Coxen Hole or the purpose-built Mahogany Bay. Arrange transport away from these immediate port areas to experience the island’s true merit. Roatan is not a hub for colonial history or high culture; it is a natural playground. If you prioritize marine exploration or relaxed beach time over shopping and sightseeing, this port delivers.

Harvest Caye, Belize

Developed by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, Harvest Caye is a 75-acre private resort island in southern Belize serving NCL, Oceania, and Regent Seven Seas ships. Unlike many private cruise destinations, it operates as a standalone resort: food and beverages are à la carte, and shipboard drink packages do not apply ashore. Knowing this sets the right baseline for your beach day.

The island's centerpiece is a 15,000-square-foot pool featuring a swim-up bar and cascading waterfall, surrounded by lounge chairs and rentable canopy cabanas. If you prefer the ocean, the seven-acre beach offers clean sand and calm waters.

For active travelers, the 130-foot-tall Flighthouse serves as the launchpad for a 3,000-foot zipline across the island, alongside a ropes course and free-fall jumps. A protected saltwater lagoon provides flat water for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. Puerto Costa Maya, Mexico

Costa Maya functions primarily as a modern logistics hub rather than a historic destination. The port facility itself is a clean, self-contained tourism village featuring pools and duty-free shopping—convenient, but essentially a manufactured environment. To engage with the authentic Yucatán, we strongly advise venturing beyond the port gates.

A short taxi or shuttle ride leads to Mahahual, a neighboring fishing village that offers a genuine slice of coastal Mexican life. Here, a pedestrian malecón runs parallel to the water, lined with unpretentious beach clubs and local eateries serving fresh seafood. It provides a relaxed, low-stress beach day far superior to the crowded pool decks back at the ship.

Culturally, Costa Maya is the strategic access point for the Chacchoben Mayan ruins. Unlike the arduous travel required for Chichén Itzá, Chacchoben is accessible via a moderate drive, offering a fascinating, less-crowded introduction to ancient architecture set within a jungle teeming with wildlife. Alternatively, nature enthusiasts should consider the journey to Lake Bacalar. Known as the "Lagoon of Seven Colors," this freshwater marvel offers stunning turquoise waters and a tranquil atmosphere distinct from the ocean coast. Whether you choose the history of the ruins, the local flavor of Mahahual, or the natural beauty of Bacalar, the true value of this stop is found outside the immediate port complex.

TRIP CANCELLATION
