PROGRAM PURPOSE

To update providers dealing with women's health issues on the most current evidence-based information and practice guidelines in the context of a team-based approach to patient care. The course will attempt to enhance clinical decision-making among providers of women's health care including Ob/Gyns, midlevel practitioners, and primary care physicians.

Bruce D. Shephard, MD, FACOG

Affiliate Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine
Tampa, Florida.

Dr. Shephard is Affiliate Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, Florida. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California, Berkeley, attended medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, and completed his Ob-Gyn residency at the University of Miami, Florida.

A former McCain Fellow at the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and principal author of “The Complete Guide to Women's Health,” Dr. Shephard is a frequent speaker and writer on women's health issues. A previous president of the Hillsborough County Medical Association, he currently serves as president of the HCMA Foundation. Dr. Shephard serves on HMO medical advisory boards for Wellcare and AVMed health plans and as a medical case reviewer for both the Health Resources and Services Administration and the Agency for Health Care Administration, Florida. A 2009 selectee of the Marquis' Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, he received the Albert N. Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.

Corey Evans, MD, MPH

Board Certified in Family Practice, Sports Medicine, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care

Dr. Evans has been a family physician and educator for forty years. After six years in a rural family practice in South Carolina, he moved to Florida to begin teaching , as an Associate Director in the Florida Hospital Family Practice Program in Orlando. He also was picked as the team physician for the Orlando Magic. In 1994 he accepted a position of Director of the Bayfront Medical Center's Family Practice Program in St. Petersburg. In 2001 he returned to private practice and also became the Director of Medical Education at St. Anthony's Hospital. He was also asked to be a physician for the Tampa Bay Rays Team, and these positions continued for the next 20 years. He is board certified in Family Medicine, Sports Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, and Palliative Care.
Originally from San Clemente, California, Dr. Evans attended Occidental College in LA, then St. Louis Medical School in Missouri, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. His family practice residency was at University of Missouri, Columbia where he was a Chief Resident. Dr. Evans tries to play the guitar poorly, and loves water sports. He teaches extensively at the national FP meetings with a special interest in exercise testing.

PORTS OF CALL

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

Civitavecchia serves as the maritime gateway to Rome, and it's essential to approach a day here with a clear and realistic plan. The 'Eternal City' is a 60- to 90-minute journey from the port, a commute that requires factoring travel time into your precious hours ashore. The most common and efficient method is the regional train, which connects Civitavecchia's station (a short walk or shuttle from the port) with Rome's key transit hubs. For those seeking more comfort and a direct route to specific sites, pre-booked private transfers are an excellent, albeit more costly, alternative.

With time being the most valuable currency, a successful day in Rome means choosing a focus. Attempting to conquer everything results in a frantic blur. We recommend choosing one of two paths. The first is a deep dive into Ancient Rome: pre-book tickets to explore the staggering scale of the Colosseum, walk through the ruins of the Roman Forum where emperors once stood, and marvel at the architectural genius of the Pantheon. This area is largely walkable and provides a cohesive historical narrative.

Alternatively, focus on the grandeur of Vatican City. Stand in the embrace of Bernini's colonnades in St. Peter's Square and enter the breathtaking St. Peter's Basilica, a monument to faith and art. A visit to the Vatican Museums to see the Sistine Chapel is possible, but requires strict, timed-entry tickets and a significant time commitment that will likely preclude other sightseeing.

Whichever path you choose, build in moments for the simple Roman pleasures that give the city its soul. Find a small piazza, order a quick espresso at a bar, toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain, or savor a scoop of authentic gelato. For those who prefer to avoid the journey altogether, Civitavecchia itself offers a pleasant waterfront, a bustling market, and the impressive Forte Michelangelo, providing a relaxed, local Italian experience.

At Sea - Cruising

Olympia (Katakolon), Greece

Katakolon is a small, pleasant port town whose primary purpose is to serve as the gateway to one of the most significant sites of the ancient world: Olympia. A 30-40 minute journey inland brings you to the birthplace of the Olympic Games, a sprawling archaeological park where you can walk in the literal footsteps of the first athletes.

The site itself is a stirring landscape of fallen columns and foundational stones. Key highlights include the ruins of the massive Temple of Zeus, once home to a wondrous statue that was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the Temple of Hera, where the Olympic flame is still lit for the modern games. The most evocative experience is standing on the starting line of the original stadium, a simple packed-earth track where history feels palpably close.

Mykonos, Greece

Eventually, your path will lead you to the island’s most iconic sights. Athens (Piraeus), Greece

Let’s be direct: your arrival at the port of Piraeus is purely functional. It’s a massive, bustling commercial hub, and its primary virtue is its proximity to Athens, the cradle of Western civilization. A day here is an incredible opportunity, but it requires a smart plan.

Your first priority is getting into the city center efficiently. The metro (Green Line 1 from Piraeus station) is a direct and affordable option that bypasses all traffic. Taxis are plentiful, but be sure to agree on a fare or insist on using the meter to avoid surprises. Once in Athens, the Acropolis is the day's non-negotiable centerpiece. Seeing the Parthenon preside over the city is a profound experience that connects you directly to 2,500 years of history, philosophy, and art. After descending from the Acropolis, the modern Acropolis Museum awaits at its base. Our best advice for a port day in Athens is to be strategic. Don’t try to see everything. Focus on the Acropolis, its museum, and a wonderful meal in the Plaka. By doing so, you will have experienced the profound essence of the city, rather than just rushing past its landmarks. Wear comfortable shoes, stay hydrated, and prepare for an unforgettable immersion into the foundations of our world.

Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul is not just a city; it's an epic, a collision of continents and cultures that unfolds across seven hills. Arriving by sea offers a stunning introduction to its skyline of domes and minarets. A single day here is an intense, unforgettable immersion, and the key is to focus your time on the historic heart of the old city, the Sultanahmet district.

From the modern Galataport cruise terminal, the efficient T1 tram line provides a direct and scenic link to this UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, within a short walk of each other, stand the titans of history. The Hagia Sophia is an architectural marvel that has served as the spiritual center for two world religions; its immense dome and layered history are profoundly moving. As it is a functioning mosque, modest dress and head coverings for women are required for entry. Across the square, the Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii) answers with its own soaring domes and a breathtaking interior of intricate Iznik tiles. Be aware that it is closed to visitors during the five daily prayer times.

It is a city that leaves a permanent mark, offering a powerful taste that will undoubtedly call you back for more.

Kusadasi (Ephesus), Turkey

Let’s be direct: the port of Kusadasi serves one primary, magnificent purpose—it is the gateway to Ephesus, one of the most complete and awe-inspiring ancient cities in the world. This isn't just another set of ruins; it's a sprawling metropolis of marble streets, temples, and public buildings that vividly brings the Roman Empire to life. The iconic facade of the Library of Celsus is just the beginning. You'll stand in the Great Theatre, which once held 25,000 spectators, and trace the chariot grooves in the pavement.

For a truly remarkable experience, we strongly recommend paying the extra entrance fee for the Terrace Houses. The bazaar offers a lively, if sometimes intense, shopping experience for carpets and leather goods. Think of Kusadasi as the functional, pleasant base for an unforgettable journey back in time.

Santorini, Greece

Santorini is every bit as breathtaking as the postcards suggest; its sun-bleached villages clinging to volcanic cliffs are a sight you won’t forget. However, as your advocates, we want you to know that a successful day here requires a smart plan. Your ship will anchor in the magnificent caldera, and you’ll tender to the small port at the base of the cliffs below the main town of Fira. From here, you have three options to ascend: a cable car (expect long lines), a strenuous walk up 588 steps, or a donkey ride.

Alternatively, for a more relaxed pace, consider a tour of one of the island's unique wineries to sample the crisp, local Assyrtiko wine while enjoying the caldera views. Santorini isn't a port for casual wandering; it's a world-class destination that rewards planning. With the right approach, its dramatic beauty is truly unforgettable.

Naples, Italy

Naples is less a polished tourist destination and more a vibrant, chaotic, and profoundly authentic slice of Southern Italy. As a port of call, it’s a world-class launchpad to some of history’s most significant sites and Europe’s most breathtaking coastlines. Your challenge isn't finding something to do; it's accepting you can't possibly do it all in one day.

For most, the primary draw lies just outside the city: the astonishing ruins of Pompeii. Buried by Vesuvius in A.D. 79, this ancient city offers an unparalleled window into Roman life.
