Professor Charles Sprung, MD, JD, is the Director Emeritus of the General Intensive Care Unit in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine and full Professor at Hadassah Hebrew University Medical Center in Jerusalem, Israel, where he has worked for the last 37 years. He was previously the Director of the Section of Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the VA Medical Center and the University of Miami for 13 years. He graduated from the University of Miami School of Law in 1988. Professor Sprung was the Chairman of the Committee on Ethics Section of the US Society of Critical Care Medicine and of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) for many years.
Professor Sprung has been active in research, particularly studying sepsis, septic shock, and ethical issues for more than 40 years. He was a member of the ACCP/SCCM consensus conference on definitions of sepsis in 1991 and a member of the Surviving Sepsis Campaign guidelines from 2002 to 2021.
He has participated in many sepsis studies, including those of encephalopathy and treatments with corticosteroids, monoclonal antibodies to endotoxin and tumor necrosis factor, interleukin-1 receptor antagonist, antithrombin III, tissue factor pathway inhibitor, human activated protein C, and recombinant platelet-activating factor. He has also served as a member of Clinical Evaluation and Data Safety and Monitoring Committees for many phase III, multicenter sepsis trials. Professor Sprung coordinated the prospective, multicenter European trial of corticosteroids in septic shock, Corticus. He was the Coordinator of several multi-center studies in ethics including End of Life Decision Making and Procedures in European Intensive Care Units (ETHICUS), Systematic Study of General Ethical Principles Involved in End of Life Decisions for Patients in European Intensive Care Units (ETHICATT), Triage Decision Making for the Elderly in European Intensive Care units (ELDICUS), and Worldwide Consensus for End of Life Decisions (Welpicus).
The Hadassah General ICU has treated more terror victims than any other ICU in the world. In addition, Professor Sprung served as the Chairman of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine Ethics Section Task Force for ICU Triage for Disasters and Pandemic Influenza, which produced recommendations for the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic, and he was a member of the American College of Chest Physicians Task Force for Mass Critical Care during a Disaster, which also published recommendations. During COVID-19, he was the first author of a paper written by an international group of triage experts on a new algorithm for triaging patients to the ICU during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic and the Chairman of the Medical Subcommittee that developed the National policy of the State of Israel for Triage Decisions for Severely Ill Patients During the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Professor Sprung has been or continues to be a member of several international committees of medical organizations, world health organizations, and governmental agencies. He has published extensively on all of the above and multiple ICU areas with more than 380 original articles and 50 book chapters. He received the 2011 ESICM Medal for outstanding contributions to both ESICM and to the development of Intensive Care Medicine worldwide, and the Roger C. Bone Advances in End-of-Life Care Award from the CHEST Foundation of the American College of Chest Physicians in October 2013. He was the 2015 Bonei Zion Prize Recipient for Science & Medicine, an award recognizing outstanding Anglo Olim who encapsulate the spirit of modern-day Zionism by contributing in a significant way towards the State of Israel.

Miami is frequently viewed merely as a logistical gateway, but to treat it solely as a transit point is a miscalculation. This is a complex metropolis that functions more like a capital of Latin America than a typical American city, offering a distinct intersection of culture, design, and history that rewards a dedicated day of exploration.
South Beach remains the headline attraction, but we advise looking past the tourist-heavy sands to focus on the Art Deco Historic District. This is a legitimate architectural treasure; a morning walk along Ocean Drive reveals the world's highest concentration of 1930s and '40s resort architecture. It is best experienced early in the day, before the crowds and heat peak, perhaps with a coffee at the News Cafe.
For a shift from pastel nostalgia to modern grit, the Wynwood Arts District is essential. Once an industrial warehouse zone, it has evolved into one of the world’s most significant open-air art installations. The Wynwood Walls are the curated center, but the surrounding blocks offer museum-quality murals and a dense collection of independent galleries and breweries that feel entirely authentic.
To understand the city's demographic heartbeat, visit Little Havana. While parts of Calle Ocho cater to tourists, the neighborhood retains its soul. Watch the intense domino games at Máximo Gómez Park, or visit a *ventanita* (walk-up window) for a *cortadito* and a guava pastry. It is an unpretentious, sensory-rich experience.
If you prefer European elegance to urban energy, the Vizcaya Museum & Gardens offers a stunning Italian Renaissance-style villa on Biscayne Bay. It provides a serene, historical counterpoint to the modern city. Note that Miami is geographically spread out and traffic can be heavy; these neighborhoods are distinct and best accessed via ride-share services rather than attempting to combine too many in a single short visit.

Cozumel requires a strategic approach to bypass the commercial density of the immediate port area and access the island’s genuine natural splendor. As the gateway to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef—the second-largest reef system in the world—the island’s primary allure lies beneath the surface. For divers and snorkelers, the drift dives at Palancar and Colombia reefs offer exceptional visibility and vibrant marine life. For a land-based alternative that avoids the masses, we recommend renting a jeep to explore the 'Wild Side' (the uninhabited east coast). This rugged shoreline offers a serene escape dotted with small, open-air reggae bars and crashing waves, providing a stark, beautiful contrast to the busy west coast.
A critical note regarding Mayan history: While the famous mainland sites of Tulum and Coba are spectacular, visiting them requires a 45-minute ferry to Playa del Carmen followed by a bus ride. This logistical commitment consumes your entire day and introduces transit stress. Unless these specific sites are non-negotiable, we advise remaining on the island. You can visit the smaller, on-island ruins of San Gervasio to satisfy historical curiosity without the risk of missing the ship.
If your goal is relaxation, Cozumel’s beach clubs are highly developed, ranging from high-energy all-inclusives to sophisticated, quiet retreats where the focus is on service and tranquility. When dining in the main town of San Miguel, avoid the waterfront tourist strip. Instead, walk three to four blocks inland to find authentic family-run cantinas serving excellent cochinita pibil and fresh ceviche at a fraction of the tourist prices. Cozumel is a polished tourism machine, but by focusing on the reef, the east coast, or a high-end beach club, you can curate a sophisticated and restorative experience.
