Learning Objectives:

Review oral, head and neck anatomy and common anatomic variations as well as lesions or conditions with site-specific anatomic predilection
Describe the conventional oral, head and neck examination, including both visual and tactile components; list the physical characteristics of oral lesions that inform the patient record; and describe a follow-up protocol for oral lesions
Describe common and significant cutaneous lesions and conditions of the head and neck region
Describe the features of common infectious conditions of the oral cavity, including bacterial, fungal and viral diseases
List the etiologic basis for oral ulcerations and differential diagnostic considerations ranging from canker sores to squamous cell carcinoma
List vesiculo-erosive conditions that may present as desquamative gingivitis and describe their diagnosis and management
Understand the etiology and clinical features of oral precancerous and cancerous conditions and their distinction from tonsillar or oropharyngeal cancer
Understand the scientific evidence for the use of commercially-available adjuncts in the detection and diagnosis of oral precancerous and cancerous lesions
List common and significant soft and hard tissue lesions, of the oral and maxillofacial region, including associated radiographic features
List the indications and clinical settings for the use of cone beam CT (cbCT) in assessing bony pathology

Dr. Kalmar received his DMD from Southern Illinois University. Following residencies in hospital dentistry (UNC-Chapel Hill) and oral pathology (Emory), he received a PhD in Experimental Pathology (Emory). From 1992-9, Dr. Kalmar served on the faculty of the Department of Pathology, University of Rochester and the Eastman Dental Center in Rochester, NY. In 1999, he joined the faculty at Ohio State and has served the Buckeyes in multiple roles since that time, including Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

Dr. Kalmar is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology (ABOMP) and a member of the Editorial Board of Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology and Oral Radiology. He is a Past President of the American Academy of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology (AAOMP) and the ABOMP. Dr. Kalmar has published over 80 manuscripts and book chapters and enjoys providing continuing education to a wide variety of professional audiences.

Mark Lingen is a Professor of Pathology at the University of Chicago Medicine. He completed his dental school training, Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology residency and PhD in Cellular and Molecular Pathology at Northwestern University.

Dr. Lingen is the Editor in Chief of the journal Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology Oral Radiology (TripleO). His research dealing with the molecular diagnostics and oral cancer prevention has resulted in more than 160 publications.

Dr. Lingen is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology and is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the Royal College of Pathologists.

Known as the "Gibraltar of the West Indies," its cannons and stone walls command breathtaking panoramic views of the sea and neighboring islands. It’s a must-see for anyone interested in history or simply a spectacular viewpoint.

For a more relaxed perspective, the St. Kitts Scenic Railway offers a unique journey along old sugarcane lines, providing a leisurely tour of the island's coastline and villages.
