PROGRAM PURPOSE

The following lecture series will provide a thorough overview of common hematologic clinical scenarios that providers are sure to encounter in practice. While the workup and management of common hematologic issues such as anemia remains a mainstay in medicine, multiple new anticoagulants, novel anticoagulant reversal agents, improved iron preparations and other new therapeutic insights have dramatically changed the practice of benign hematology in the last few years. After this lecture series attendees will have a good refresher on well-established clinical hematologic issues, as well as a timely and important overview of multiple practice changing hematologic therapies that occurred in the last several years.

Hematology/Oncology topics:

Workup and Management of anemia
- Overview the workup and management of common presentations of anemia.
Management of too little Iron
- Be able to diagnose, and treat iron deficiency anemia including the appropriate use of IV iron.
Managment of too much Iron
- Be able to diagnose and manage hemochromatosis and other causes of secondary iron overload.
Thrombosis updates I
- Be able to devise an appropriate treatment protocol for provoked and unprovoked thrombosis
Thrombosis updates II
- Be able to manage less common thrombosis including calf DVT, splanchnic vein thrombosis and cryptogenic arterial occlusion
Anticoagulation managment and reversal
- Overview the new oral anticoagunants and new reversal agents.

- Workup and manage new forms of TMA including TTP, HUS, and atypical HUS.

My three areas of interest are in the utility of inhibitors of the contact activation pathway of blood coagulation to prevent medical device-related thrombosis, the prevention of blood clotting in patients with sepsis, and the resolution and prevention of post thrombotic syndrome.
