PROGRAM PURPOSE

Over the past fifteen years there has been an international flurry of new knowledge generated from quality clinical trials and pharmaceutical research and development in all aspects of women’s health. For many healthcare providers, the realization of the need to stay closely informed came abruptly with concerns over our management of the symptomatic menopausal woman.

Even those of us in academia responsible for disseminating this new evidence to future physicians and specialists found it difficult to keep pace with the recent discoveries leading to better comprehension in the pathophysiology of certain female disorders. This would lead, for example, to new guidelines that were generated in cervical cancer screening and HPV-associated cancer prevention.

  1. PCOS
    • Risk modification may influence long term management so it is necessary to diagnose and treat. Further, treatment options are dependent on patient desired outcome and should be considered.
  2. Cystic Fibrosis
    • New long term treatment modalities and medications can be considered and may be newer options for consideration of primary care management.
  3. Abnormal Skin Lesions
    • Recognition of abnormal skin lesions remains and management remains a key perspective of primary care management. Specific to melanoma, treatment has transitioned and guidelines related to cancer screening, surveillance, and treatment have additional considerations.

    • Depression and behavioral integration into patient centered medical home consideration and federally qualified health centers continue to be a priority.
    • Recognition of mental illness as a Comorbidity of chronic health care conditions along with screening, diagnosis,and treatment are cornerstones of management.

    • Medical, ethical and end-of-life care decisions impact the care of patients and often have providers questioning personal beliefs while Integrating medical knowledge and evidence based practice, keeping an eye on cost effective care.
    • Integration of case studies will be utilized to demonstrate application of medical knowledge base with practical ideas.

    • Describe the most common etiologies of primary amenorrhea and secondary amenorrhea.
    • Be able to perform an appropriate diagnostic approach to the patient presenting with amenorrhea.

    • Know the differences between primary dysmenorrhea and secondary dysmenorrhea .

    • The healthcare provider will recognize the development of modern day cervical cancer screening, the role of high risk HPV in male and female lower genital tract, oropharyngeal, anal carcinogenesis, and the importance of promoting HPV vaccination
  9. FLASH!!! To Treat or Not To Treat with Estrogen
    • The clinician will address the concerns of perimenopausal women including their complaints of mood disturbance, vasomotor symptoms, insomnia, diminished sexual desire, vaginal atrophy. He/She will offer patients a variety of behavioral, hormonal, nonhormonal therapeutic modalities during this perimenopausal window
  10. CONTEMPORARY UNDERSTANDING OF THE ORIGIN OF OVARIAN CANCER, RISK REDUCTION, AND THE EVALUATION OF THE ADNEXAL MASS
    • The provider will describe the new model of ovarian carcinogenesis and the obstacles encountered in trying to develop ovarian cancer screening.
    • The participant will assess the malignant potential of a palpable mass in a woman using present day imaging and ovarian tumor markers and direct appropriate conservative, medical, or surgical intervention.
  11. THE PCOS LOOK-ALIKES
    • Participants will generate a differential diagnosis for females of various reproductive ages presenting with signs of hyperandrogenism and order appropriate laboratory, radiologic imaging and timely referral to an endocrinologist, gynecologic oncologist, or general surgeon.
  12. PUTTING OUT “THE BURNING VULVA”
    • The participant will give examples of the variety of infectious, inflammatory, neoplastic, and neurologic disorders that cause vulvar burning/ pruritus, and make timely decisions on proper treatment and need for biopsy.
  13. THAT PESKY VAGINAL DISCHARGE
    • The participant will draw from historical and physical exam findings, culture and new quantitative PCR based assays to properly detect and treat a variety of recurrent infectious and non-infectious causes of vaginal irritative symptoms.
  14. ADDRESSING FEMALE DIMINISHED LIBIDO WITHOUT FEAR
    • The attendee will openly discuss problems of a sexual nature with his/her patients, define the type of sexual dysfunction and offer behavioral, pharmacologic therapy or referral to sex therapist

Doctor Karty is a Board Certified Family Medicine physician and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. She holds medical licenses in Kansas, Missouri, South Carolina and Illinois. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology and a medical degree from the University of Missouri ‐ Kansas City School of Medicine and is currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration from the University of Kansas ‐ School of Business. 

Dr. Karty joined Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City (BlueKC) as Medical Director in 2016. Previously, Dr. Karty served as Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center and Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, both located in the Kansas City metropolitan area. 

Dr. Karty served as the Medical Director in the Continuing Medical Education Division at the American Academy of Family Physicians, having been a member of that organization throughout her medical career, joining in the late 1980's. In addition to creating innovative educational formats, planning CME meetings, and AAFP governance, she represented the Academy at national organizations including the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Institute of Medicine (IOM), the Brookings Institute, the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB), the Council of Medical Specialty Societies (CMSS), and just completed a multi-year term as Co-Chair of the Inter-Society Coordinating Committee (ISCC) of the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a team highlighting integration of practitioner education and genomics around the world.

Dr. Karty has moderated meetings, both nationally and internationally throughout her career, and served as a member representative on a Gender Equity in Medical Testing Consensus Group meeting at Georgetown University for Hadassah, helping to craft legislative policy supporting the work of that team, while also serving as co-chair for the National Hadassah Physicians’ Council and helping to create continuing medical education meetings in Israel and serving the Greater Kansas City Hadassah as the Vice President of Membership. Currently, she serves on the Board of Directors for Congregation Beth Shalom and is the Vice President of Programming, as well as a leadership position with the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Johnson County Mental Health (in Johnson County, Kansas).

Dr. Frank Marsalisi is the Director of Gynecology  at the Bayfront OB/Gyn Residency Program , Bayfront Health St. Petersburg -Orlando Health Inc.. Originally from New York, he preceded his medical degree from Michigan State University with two years of research with publication in Hypersensitivity Diseases at USV Pharmaceutical and the Upjohn Company. 

After completing his Obstetrics and Gynecology residency as Chief resident at the University of South Florida, he went on to fulfill his four-year commitment with the National Health Service Corp as Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Ruskin Migrant and Community Health Center in Ruskin, Florida. While at Ruskin, he was made a Clinical Assistant Professor of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of South Florida and received the U.S. Public Health Service Regional Health Administrator's Award.

Throughout his residency training and postgraduate career, Dr. Marsalisi has been the recipient of many prestigious university and national teaching awards, including the University of South Florida's Distinguished Professor Award and the John Turlich Medical Student Teaching Award, the Council on Resident Education in Ob/Gyn National Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching, and many Bayfront Health Teaching Faculty of the Year awards.

He has been honored as being one of the "Top Obstetricians and Gynecologists in America" by the Consumer Research Council of America, and in 2017 he was recognized by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd to be among the"Leading Physicians of the World". 

He is a medical community leader serving on the Board of his county medical association and is a delegate to the Florida Medical Association. He has been a speaker on women's health issues for the University at Sea since 2012.
