PROGRAM PURPOSE

Many changes have taken place in the field of women's physical and emotional health creating significant implications for those who care for female patients.

This program is designed to provide participants with current up to date information in order to provide the very best in contemporary patient care. Unique to the lecture format is the identification and analysis of specific physical disorders and their effect on the emotional health of patients.

Participants should be able to apply this new knowledge immediately into clinical practice. A multi-discipline, integrated approach to patient care is emphasized with an eye towards quality improvement and overall health care team performance.

The Special Topics in Women's Health lectures focus on changes in women's physical and mental health during important life transitions: menses, pregnancy and postpartum. Participants will learn the latest evidence-based treatments to address the mental issues that arise with these transitions.

Additionally, the Special Topics in Women's Health will address traumatic occurrences that disproportionately affect women's health, i. e., domestic violence and sexual assault, as well as, the latest evidence-based treatments to address the trauma that arises from these events. The domestic violence lectures will be a total of 2 hours to comply with required CME training in many states.

- Utilize appropriate diagnostic approaches to evaluate and treat patients across the entire spectrum of CVI

- Identify causes and sequelae of CVI unique to the pelvic anatomy in female patients

- Analyze pelvic pain in the clinical setting of endometriosis and differentiate between dysmenorrhea, non-menstrual pelvic pain and pain with intercourse.

Clinical Associate Professor, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Stony Brook University Renaissance School of Medicine; Clinical Professor, Obstetrics and Gynecology, NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine

Dr. Ninia is the Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson, NY and a Clinical Associate Professor of OB/GYN at Stony Brook University School of Medicine.

He received his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine and continued his post graduate training at Nassau County Medical Center. For over 30 years, he has maintained two separate private practices in both OB/GYN and Phlebology. He has lectured internationally on the topic of women's health and venous disease and has authored 3 text book chapters and over 25 articles in peer reviewed journals. He is the clerkship director for NYITCOM medical students rotating through St. Charles hospital department of OBGYN with administrative, didactic and clinical teaching responsibilities.

A Fellow of the American College of OB/GYN's, Surgeons and Phlebologists, he is board certified in OB/GYN as well as Phlebology and was instrumental in the creation of the nationally administered Phlebology board certification exam. He is certified by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography as a Registered Vascular Technologist. He has served as a member of the American College of Phlebology Board of Directors and the Phlebology Foundation Board. He has served on the Catholic Health Services of Long Island Board of Trustees and helped create initiatives to improve patient safety in Labor and Delivery. His efforts resulted in St. Charles hospital earning the Healthcare Association of New York State Pinnacle Award for quality and patient safety along with his earning the prestigious Theodore Roosevelt award given to those individuals who provide outstanding voluntary contributions and leadership at Long Island hospitals.

Dr. Zappert is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine. As a faculty member at the Center for Neuroscience in Women’s Health, Dr. Zappert was instrumental in developing and directing the first Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program in Women’s Health. Previously, Dr. Zappert had served as Director of Clinical Training at Vaden Student Health Services at Stanford.

Currently, she teaches a course on Sexual Violence and Recovery and supervises the clinical work of residents in the Department of Psychiatry. In addition to her clinical, teaching, and research responsibilities, Dr. Zappert served as the founding Director of Stanford University's SHARE/Title IX office (Sexual Harassment/Assault Prevention Education) from its inception in 1993, and now holds the title of Director Emerita.

In 2001, Dr. Zappert initiated the Allies for Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program for women graduate and post-doctoral students at Stanford, and more recently, extended that program to create the Allies for Women in Social Science and Humanities (WISSH) program.

Dr. Zappert's clinical work and research have focused on the areas of women's mental health, work, and wellness. Her book, Getting It Right: How Working Mothers Successfully Take Up the Challenge of Life, Work and Family, has been nationally recognized as an authoritative resource for professional women and their families. Most recently, Dr. Zappert was the senior author of an article on The Impact of a Support Group Intervention for Women in STEM. In 2017, she was awarded a Faculty Fellowship at the Clayman Institute for Gender Research.

Think of Seattle not as a starting line, but as the first, exceptional chapter of your vacation. While it’s tempting to fly in on the morning of your cruise, we strongly advise against it. A simple flight delay can put your entire trip in jeopardy. Instead, we encourage our clients to arrive one or two days early, transforming a logistical necessity into a memorable urban exploration. This allows you to decompress, adjust to the time zone, and immerse yourself in the unique character of the Pacific Northwest before you even step on the ship.

**Getting Your Bearings**

Getting from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Sea-Tac) to the downtown hotel district is refreshingly straightforward. For a seamless and budget-conscious transfer, the Link Light Rail is an excellent choice. The 40-minute ride takes you directly to Westlake Station in the heart of the city, a short walk or taxi from most major hotels. Of course, ride-sharing services and taxis are also readily available.

**A Perfect Pre-Cruise Day in Seattle**

With a full day at your disposal, you can experience the city’s essential highlights without feeling rushed. Here’s a suggested itinerary:

**Morning: The Soul of the City at Pike Place Market**
Start your day at the iconic Pike Place Market. More than just a tourist stop, this is the city’s historic heart and pantry. Arrive early to watch the vendors set up and beat the biggest crowds. While the famous fish-throwing is a must-see, the real magic lies deeper. Wander through stalls overflowing with vibrant bouquets, sample artisanal cheeses at Beecher’s Handmade Cheese (watch them make it through the window), and grab a warm, savory pastry from Piroshky Piroshky. The original Starbucks is here, but be prepared for a line; for a superb coffee experience without the wait, we recommend Storyville Coffee Pike Place, located on the top floor with a cozy fireplace and market views.

**Lunch: A Taste of the Waterfront**
For lunch, you can’t do better than a cup of world-class chowder from Pike Place Chowder. The line moves quickly and is absolutely worth it. Enjoy your meal at a nearby table or take it to the adjacent Victor Steinbrueck Park for a picnic with stunning views of Elliott Bay and the Olympic Mountains.

**Afternoon: Iconic Views and Glass Art**
From the market, it’s a pleasant walk or a quick monorail ride to the Seattle Center. Here, you’ll find an unbeatable combination of attractions. Ascend the recently renovated Space Needle for panoramic views of the city, Puget Sound, and, on a clear day, the majestic Mount Rainier. The rotating glass floor offers a thrilling perspective. Right next door is the Chihuly Garden and Glass museum. This is a non-negotiable for anyone who appreciates art and beauty. The vibrant, impossibly intricate glass sculptures are breathtaking, culminating in a magnificent glasshouse that frames the Space Needle in its ceiling.

**Evening: Neighborhood Dining**
Seattle’s culinary scene is a highlight. For a classic Pacific Northwest seafood dinner with waterfront views, make a reservation at Elliott’s Oyster House. For a more contemporary experience, venture into the Capitol Hill neighborhood, known for its vibrant energy and exceptional restaurants. Or, consider the historic Ballard neighborhood, where a spot like The Walrus and the Carpenter offers a celebrated take on local oysters and small plates in a lively, intimate setting. Reservations are highly recommended for any top-tier restaurant.

**If You Have a Second Day**

An extra day allows you to explore further. Consider a quintessential Puget Sound experience: a 35-minute ferry ride to Bainbridge Island. The journey itself provides the best possible views of the Seattle skyline. Once there, you can stroll through the charming main street of Winslow, with its boutiques, cafes, and galleries. Alternatively, dive into modern culture at the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP), an architectural marvel designed by Frank Gehry, or explore Seattle’s oldest neighborhood, Pioneer Square, known for its Victorian architecture and fascinating Underground Tour.

At Sea - Cruising

Stephens Passage

Stephens Passage is less a simple channel and more a grand, open-air theater for Alaskan wildlife. As your ship navigates this deep, glacier-carved fjord, you're entering one of Southeast Alaska's most vital marine highways—a primary summer feeding ground for humpback whales. For our clients, this is a key distinction: whale sightings here aren't a matter of 'if,' but 'when and where.' We advise you to find a spot on an open deck, keep your binoculars ready, and listen for announcements from the naturalist onboard. The first sign is often a misty plume of spray hanging in the crisp air, followed by the unforgettable sight of a massive fluke lifting gracefully before a deep dive.

The surrounding landscape is a masterpiece of raw scale. The dense, temperate rainforests of Admiralty and Douglas Islands rise steeply from the water's edge, their 5,000-foot peaks often shrouded in mist. Look closely at the rocky shorelines for colonies of hulking Steller sea lions, their barks carrying across the water, and for the iconic silhouette of a bald eagle perched high in a Sitka spruce. While humpbacks are the stars, the possibility of spotting a pod of orcas slicing through the water adds a layer of thrilling unpredictability. This is the essence of an Alaskan cruise day. Juneau, Alaska

Juneau is a quintessential Alaskan port, a capital city uniquely isolated by wilderness and accessible only by air or sea. This isolation is its charm, creating a place where dramatic nature is always the main event. The undisputed star is the Mendenhall Glacier, a magnificent river of ice just a short drive from the docks. The visitor center provides spectacular views, but for a truly memorable experience, we recommend a helicopter tour that lands you directly on the glacier itself—an investment, but one that pays dividends in awe.

Beyond the glacier, Juneau is one of Alaska’s premier whale-watching destinations. The nutrient-rich waters of the Inside Passage are a summer feeding ground for humpback whales, and sightings are exceptionally common. For a different perspective, the Mount Roberts Tramway, which departs right from the cruise ship dock, whisks you 1,800 feet up for panoramic views of the Gastineau Channel and the surrounding Tongass National Forest.

The downtown area is compact, historic, and easily explored on foot. While it can be bustling with fellow cruisers, it’s worth a stroll down South Franklin Street to see the preserved architecture. For a dose of culture, the Alaska State Museum offers a superb collection of Native Alaskan and pioneer history. While the famous Red Dog Saloon is a lively and historic stop, for a more authentic taste of Juneau, seek out a local salmon bake. Juneau delivers exactly what you hope for in Alaska: breathtaking scenery and wildlife encounters that feel both grand and accessible.

Hubbard Glacier

Hubbard Glacier is not a port of call in the traditional sense; it is a destination for pure observation, a slow-motion encounter with one of nature’s most powerful forces. There are no towns, no tours, and no tenders to shore. The entire experience unfolds from the deck of your ship as it navigates the ice-strewn waters of Disenchantment Bay.

The glacier itself is a spectacle of scale. At its terminus, the river of ice is over six miles wide, with a face that towers up to 400 feet above the waterline. Its most striking feature is its color—a deep, incandescent blue that seems to glow from within, a result of ancient, densely compacted ice absorbing every other color of the spectrum. The experience is auditory as much as it is visual. Listen for the sharp crack and deep groan of the ice, a sound that precedes the dramatic spectacle of calving. When a skyscraper-sized block of ice shears off and crashes into the sea, the sound, often called “white thunder,” echoes across the bay. This is a living, moving landscape; unlike most Alaskan glaciers, Hubbard is advancing, slowly pushing its way into the bay. Find a good vantage point, perhaps with a warm drink and binoculars, and simply watch. It is a profound, humbling display of geological time in action.

Sitka, Alaska

Sitka offers a compelling depth that sets it apart from many Alaskan ports. It’s a genuine crossroads of Tlingit, Russian, and American history, all set against the dramatic backdrop of the dormant volcano, Mount Edgecumbe. While the main cruise dock is a few miles out, frequent shuttles make accessing the compact, walkable downtown effortless. Once there, you’ll find St. Michael’s Cathedral, an onion-domed landmark that speaks to Sitka’s past as the capital of Russian America.

The true cultural heart, however, is a short walk away at Sitka National Historical Park. We highly recommend the scenic trail that winds through a temperate rainforest, lined with magnificent Tlingit and Haida totem poles that tell stories of clans and legends. For wildlife, Sitka delivers in an unusually accessible and meaningful way. The Alaska Raptor Center, a rehabilitation facility for eagles, owls, and other birds of prey, offers incredible up-close encounters. Equally impressive is the Fortress of the Bear, a sanctuary providing a safe, naturalistic home for rescued brown bears. Both are a short ride from town and are well worth the trip. Out on the water, the Sitka Sound is famously dotted with charming sea otters, often seen floating on their backs. Sitka isn't about manufactured tourist attractions; it's a port that rewards the curious traveler with authentic encounters—with history, with wildlife, and with a profound sense of place that feels uniquely Alaskan.

Ketchikan, Alaska

Ketchikan is often your first taste of Alaska, and it’s a potent one. As the self-proclaimed "Salmon Capital of the World," this bustling town is built on fishing, timber, and the rich cultural heritage of the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples. Its authenticity is its greatest asset.

From the cruise dock, you're steps away from the town's most famous sight: Creek Street. This historic boardwalk, once the city's notorious red-light district, is now a charming collection of colorful stilted houses, galleries, and shops perched over the rushing creek. It’s an essential photo-op and a delightful place for a stroll, easily explored on your own.

To truly appreciate the region's soul, seek out the magnificent totem poles. The Totem Heritage Center, a manageable walk or short taxi ride from the port, houses a stunning collection of original 19th-century poles rescued from abandoned villages. It’s a quiet, powerful museum that offers deep insight into Native Alaskan artistry and tradition. For a more expansive outdoor setting, Totem Bight State Historical Park is another excellent choice, though it requires a short tour or taxi ride.

While the town is engaging, Ketchikan’s grandeur lies in the surrounding wilderness. For a truly unforgettable day, a floatplane or boat tour into the Misty Fjords National Monument is an unparalleled experience. These glacier-carved cliffs and serene waters are the Alaska you've dreamed of. For a more accessible nature fix, you can often spot salmon fighting their way upstream at the Ketchikan Creek fish ladder right in town during the summer season. Ketchikan is compact and can feel busy, but by focusing on either its rich cultural core or the spectacular nature at its doorstep, you'll find it a deeply rewarding port of call.

Victoria, British Columbia

Victoria offers a distinctly civilized and manageable port day, a welcome change of pace from more sprawling destinations. Its compact, walkable Inner Harbour is the city’s heart, framed by the grand legislative buildings and the iconic Fairmont Empress hotel. This is where you’ll find the city’s pulse, and it’s an excellent starting point.

For many, the main draw is the world-renowned Butchart Gardens. We'll be direct: it's a masterpiece of horticulture and absolutely worth the visit if you're a passionate gardener. However, be mindful that it requires a significant bus or taxi ride (about 30-40 minutes each way), consuming a fair portion of your day. If you prefer to stay local, you won't be disappointed.

The Royal BC Museum, conveniently located at the Inner Harbour, is one of Canada's best, offering compelling exhibits on both natural and human history that can easily fill a few hours. A short, pleasant walk from the main harbour leads to Fisherman's Wharf, a quirky collection of floating homes and food kiosks where you can enjoy fresh fish and chips while watching seals play. For a dose of Victorian grandeur, Craigdarroch Castle provides a fascinating glimpse into the life of a 19th-century coal baron. Or, simply stroll through the manicured lawns of nearby Beacon Hill Park.

Victoria's strength lies in its quality and accessibility. Whether you opt for a grand garden tour or a simple, elegant walk around the harbour, it delivers a polished and memorable experience without feeling overwhelming.
