PROGRAM PURPOSE

The purpose of these lectures is to provide an overview of the management of common endocrinology problems utilizing new guidelines and medications to improve the care of patients seen in primary care settings. Areas covered include: thyroid disorders, and the effectiveness of dietary, surgical and medical therapy for obesity.

New guidelines have been published by the American College of Cardiology for the management of lipid disorders and cases will be used to illustrate their effective use. Comfortable use of the diagnostic tests and medications for metabolic bone problems is another goal. An approach to the integration of new diabetes medications into primary care practice and the American Diabetes Association guideline changes for 2020 will be discussed to improve understanding of their utility in various types of patients particularly those with complications from diabetes. Advances in the diagnosis and management of common pituitary and adrenal disorders have recently changed with new guidelines from the Endocrine Society.

It is estimated that more than 100 million adults in the United States experience chronic pain and that over 20 million experience moderate to severe also known as "high impact" chronic pain. It is therefore not surprising that pain is the most common reason for a person to visit a health care provider. We will cover key timely topics in pain management focused and enabling the participant to become more comfortable with the assessment and treatment of various chronic pain conditions.

Charles Argoff, MD

Dr. Argoff is Professor of Neurology at Albany Medical College and Director of the Comprehensive Pain Center at Albany Medical Center.

He was previously Director of the Cohen Pain Management Center at North Shore University Hospital and is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the International Association for the Study of Pain, the American Pain Society and the American Academy of Pain Medicine.

In 2012 he received the American Pain Elizabeth Narcessan Award for Outstanding Educational Achievements and the previous year the Academic Pain Educator of the Year Award from the American Society of Pain Educators.

Veronica Piziak, MD, PhD, FACP

Professor of Medicine, College of Medicine Texas A & M, Temple, Tx.

Dr. Piziak received her undergraduate degrees and her PhD from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and her medical degree from University Kentucky in Lexington. She completed her internal medicine residency at Akron general Medical Center in Akron Ohio and her fellowship training in endocrinology metabolism at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dr. Piziak is presently the Emeritus Chief of Endocrinology, Director of the Diabetes section and Director of the Endocrinology Fellowship program at Baylor Scott and White in Temple Texas. She is a Professor of Medicine at Texas A&M University and a fellow of the American College of physicians.

Boston, Massachusetts - Before cruising out of Boston, take in the sights. Meander the streets to find historic wonders and modern neighborhoods; stores and restaurants with old-time character; and gracious green spaces as well as a beautiful waterfront. Take a trip back to the American Revolution—explore the Freedom Trail and see legendary figures come alive at buildings and attractions, including the Paul Revere House and Old South Meeting House, which are located in Lexington and Concord just outside Boston. Each Boston neighborhood has its own personality. Catch street performers in Cambridge’s Harvard Square, do a food tour of the North End’s Little Italy, and then admire the 19-century architecture of Beacon Hill.

Portland, Maine - Portland is Maine's business, financial and retail capital and the largest city in the state. Seascapes and cityscapes blend harmoniously in Portland, perched on a peninsula, jutting out into island-studded Casco Bay.
