PROGRAM PURPOSE

The purpose of these lectures is to provide an overview of the management of common endocrinology and women health problems utilizing new guidelines and medications to improve the care of patients seen in primary care settings. Areas covered include: thyroid disorders, and the effectiveness of dietary, surgical and medical therapy for obesity.

Comfortable use of the diagnostic tests and medications for metabolic bone problems is another goal. An approach to the integration of new diabetes medications into primary care practice and the American Diabetes Association guideline changes for 2020 will be discussed to improve understanding of their utility in various types of patients particularly those with complications from diabetes. Advances in the diagnosis and management of common pituitary and adrenal disorders have recently changed with new guidelines from the Endocrine Society. There are updated guidelines for PCOS which improve the therapy of the total condition.

Professor Chaim Lotan was born in Israel in 1952, and was educated at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem Medical School. He is an Interventional Cardiologist with over 35 years' experience in the field. He has been Director of the Heart Institute of The Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center in Jerusalem, Israel, since September 2000. He is Professor of Medicine in Cardiology at The Hebrew University.

Prof. Lotan served as President of the Israel Heart Society in 2011-2013. He participates in various basic science and clinical research projects, and he is a consultant to several start-up companies. He is Course Co-Director of the international scientific congress “Innovations in Cardiovascular Interventions” held in Israel. Prof. Lotan initiated, and together with Dr. Yaakov Nahmias, built the interdisciplinary academic track of Biodesign Innovation at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Dr. Piziak received her undergraduate degrees and her PhD from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and her medical degree from University Kentucky in Lexington. She completed her internal medicine residency at Akron general Medical Center in Akron Ohio and her fellowship training in endocrinology metabolism at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio. 

Dr. Piziak is presently the Emeritus Chief of Endocrinology, Director of the Diabetes section and Director of the Endocrinology Fellowship program at Baylor Scott and White in Temple Texas. She is a Professor of Medicine at Texas A&M University and a fellow of the American College of physicians.

Hike along the seven available walking trails in Sage Mountain National Park for stunning panoramic views of the island and the surrounding natural habitat. Snorkeling in the crystal-clear Caribbean Sea and a rum tasting at Callwood Rum Distillery are essential on a cruise to Tortola. Philipsburg, St. Maarten - The capital of the Dutch side of St. Maarten is the town of Philipsburg, though St. Maarten is an island with two distinct sides. To the north is the French side, whose capital is Marigot, while Philipsburg sits on the southern part of the island. When exploring on cruises that go to St. Maarten, it’s important to visit both sides to understand their customs and heritage.

You’ll quickly be charmed by all sides of the island. Of course, this Caribbean island is best known for its beaches, like Maho Beach or Great Bay Beach, one of the area’s best snorkeling spots.
