PROGRAM PURPOSE

The purpose of these lectures is to provide an experienced clinician's perspective on the delivery of individualized, patient-centered care and to identify and treat important problems in primary care medical practice. Dale A. Matthews, MD, FACP has served on the faculties of Yale University, the University of Connecticut, and Georgetown University and has lectured at over 30 medical schools. He gives lectures on primary care general internal medicine, the doctor-patient relationship, and the psychological and spiritual dimensions of medicine, including the role of religion, faith, and prayer in clinical care. He is the author of The Faith Factor: Proof of the Healing Power of Prayer (Viking, 1998), a four-volume research work (The Faith Factor: An Annotated Bibliography of Clinical Research on Spiritual Subjects), three documentaries, and over 65 peer-reviewed scientific articles, book chapters, and other publications. Dr. Matthews is a graduate of Princeton (AB, cum laude, Romance Languages, 1976) and Duke University School of Medicine (1980). His internship and residency in internal medicine took place at the University of Connecticut (1980-3) and he completed the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar Program and Fellowship in Clinical Epidemiology at Yale (1983-5). In 1989, he was named the George Morris Piersol Teaching and Research Scholar of the American College of Physicians. He has received many awards for his compassionate patient care, including Washingtonian Magazine Top Doctor recognition. He has appeared on numerous television shows, including the Oprah Winfrey Show, Larry King Live, and Good Morning America. He lives in McLean, Virginia with his wife, Demetra, a certified public accountant. He has two adult children and three grandchildren. He enjoys family and church activities, Bible study and teaching, golf, baseball, piano, singing, songwriting, ballroom dancing, travel, and photography.

Dr. Rodgers is an Associate Professor of Medicine and the Associate Chief of Cardiology for Education at The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School. He led the development of the cardiovascular curriculum for the new medical school. Dr. Rodgers teaches medical students, residents and cardiology fellows on a regular basis. Beyond medical education, he has a particular interest in prevention the early detection of heart disease, team-based care and innovative value based care for the safety net population.

Dr. Rodgers received his medical education at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He completed his fellowship training in cardiology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He began his cardiology practice in Austin in 1989. Dr. Rodgers has been very active in the American College of Cardiology over the last 25 years. He has served as the Chair of the Board of Governors, the Board of Trustees and as Co-chair Leadership Council of the Cardiovascular Team.

He has also served on a number of other committees and writing groups within the College He received the Distinguished Fellow of the American College of Cardiology Award in 2017. This year he was awarded Master of the American College of Cardiology.

Buenos Aires is not a city you simply see; it's a city you feel. A captivating blend of grand European architecture and passionate Latin American soul, its character unfolds in its distinct neighborhoods, or *barrios*. With only a day, strategic focus is essential.

The elegant Recoleta district is a must for its Parisian-style boulevards and, most famously, the Recoleta Cemetery. This city of the dead is an astonishing labyrinth of ornate mausoleums, including the final resting place of Eva Perón. Nearby, the MALBA (Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos Aires) in Palermo offers a superb collection, including works by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, for a modern cultural immersion.

For a completely different atmosphere, head to La Boca. Its Caminito, a vibrant street museum of brightly painted tenement houses, is undeniably tourist-focused but remains an iconic photo opportunity. Here, tango dancers perform on the cobblestones, offering a glimpse into the dance that defines the city's spirit. A more authentic vibe can be found in the historic San Telmo neighborhood, with its colonial buildings, antique shops, and bustling Sunday street market. It’s the perfect place to wander and soak in the city's bohemian heart.

No visit is complete without indulging in the culinary scene. A classic *parrilla* (steakhouse) experience is essential; the quality of Argentine beef, paired with a bold Malbec, lives up to its legendary reputation. For a quicker bite, savory empanadas are a staple. The city is vast, so using a taxi or ride-share service is the most efficient way to navigate between these distinct districts. We recommend choosing two neighborhoods to explore deeply rather than attempting to see everything in a rush.

Montevideo, Uruguay

Montevideo presents a compelling, more tranquil alternative to its bustling neighbor, Buenos Aires. It’s a city of subtle charms and faded European grandeur, best appreciated at a leisurely pace. Fortunately, the cruise port is perfectly positioned for independent exploration, located at the edge of the Ciudad Vieja (Old Town).

From the pier, a short walk brings you into a grid of historic streets lined with Art Deco and Neoclassical buildings. The heart of the old city is Plaza Independencia, a grand square watched over by the iconic Palacio Salvo. While the city lacks a single blockbuster attraction, its appeal lies in the aggregate: the quiet courtyards, the independent bookshops, and the relaxed café culture.

The undeniable highlight for most day visitors is the Mercado del Puerto. More than a market, this historic iron-and-glass hall is a temple to Uruguayan barbecue, or *parrilla*. The air is thick with the savory smoke of grilling meats. We recommend finding a seat at the counter of one of the many bustling eateries, ordering a variety of cuts, and pairing it with a glass of the nation’s signature Tannat wine. It’s a quintessential and deeply satisfying local experience.

For a sense of the city’s soul, take a taxi or a long walk along a portion of the Rambla, the nearly 14-mile-long coastal promenade. Here, you’ll see Montevideanos jogging, fishing, and sipping *mate*, offering a genuine slice of daily life against the backdrop of the vast Río de la Plata. Montevideo doesn’t shout for your attention; it rewards those who take the time to listen.

Punta del Este, Uruguay

Often called the “St. Tropez of South America,” Punta del Este is a chic, sun-drenched peninsula that separates the calm river waters of Playa Mansa from the energetic Atlantic waves of Playa Brava. While its reputation is one of glamour, the city offers an accessible and stylish day ashore. The most iconic landmark is found right on Playa Brava: Mario Irarrázabal’s monumental sculpture, “La Mano,” a giant hand emerging from the sand, which makes for a memorable photo.

For a truly unique cultural experience, a short taxi ride to nearby Punta Ballena is essential. Here you’ll find Casapueblo, the fantastical, sprawling white villa and studio of artist Carlos Páez Vilaró. Built over decades without formal plans, this living sculpture overlooking the sea is now a museum and hotel, offering a fascinating glimpse into the artist's life and work.
