Dr. Nathanson graduated from the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine where he also completed his internal medicine training. He began practising internal medicine and critical care medicine in 1995 at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket, Ontario. In 2010 he completed a Master of Science degree in Health Care Management at the Harvard Graduate School of Public Health. He is currently enrolled in additional graduate level studies in Hebrew literature (Medical Bioethics and Jewish Health Law) at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary of Yeshiva University in New York.
Dr. Nathanson has served in a variety of administrative roles: Medical Director of the inpatient Palliative Care Unit; founding Medical Director the Heart Function Program; President of the Medical Staff Association; Chair of the Clinical Quality and Resource Utilization Committee; and Medical Director of Acute Medicine Programs. Dr. Nathanson helped found the Clinical Resource Utilization Management Program and he founded the Southlake Hospitalist Program.
Dr. Nathanson has served on two Ontario provincial health policy task forces on hospital resource utilization. From Jan 2020 to mid-2022, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Nathanson served at Southlake as Medical Director of the Intensive Care Unit and he founded the physician-led Critical Care Outreach Program, he served as Chief of Staff at Stevenson Memorial Hospital in Alliston, Ontario, and he served on local, regional, and provincial pandemic policy advisory panels.
Dr. Nathanson’s many personal interests include cycling and motorcycling, together with his wife, Genny, all over Ontario, Canada, the US, and beyond!
Jessica Crandall Snyder, RDN, CDCES, is a nationally recognized Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist, and founder of VitalRD, based in Centennial, Colorado. She earned her degree from Colorado State University and completed her postgraduate training in Oneonta, New York, with clinical rotations at Rose Medical Center. Jessica leads a thriving virtual practice, partnering with healthcare providers and developing hospital-based outpatient nutrition programs to expand access to high-quality, patient-centered care.
With expertise spanning weight management, obesity care, bariatric nutrition, diabetes management, sports nutrition, and family health, Jessica is passionate about helping individuals navigate sustainable lifestyle change in a supportive and approachable environment. Michael Snyder, MD, FACS, FASMBS, DABOM, is a nationally and internationally recognized bariatric and advanced laparoscopic surgeon. He serves as the Medical Director of the Bariatric Surgery Program at Rose Medical Center in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Snyder earned his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine and completed his surgical internship and residency at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon. He is board-certified in General Surgery and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine.
A leader in metabolic and bariatric surgery, Dr. Snyder is an active member of the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). To truly grasp the scale of the Juneau Icefield, we recommend a helicopter excursion. Landing on the glacier or dog sledding on the ice cap is a significant investment, but it provides a visceral connection to the landscape that a distant view from the visitor center cannot match. Whittier is your gateway to the vast, road-accessible interior of Southcentral Alaska, and rushing straight to the airport would be a significant missed opportunity.
Whittier itself is one of the most peculiar towns in North America. A former top-secret Cold War military port, its identity is shaped by isolation and function. Nearly all of its few hundred residents live in a single high-rise, the Begich Towers, a surreal sight against a backdrop of hanging glaciers and steep, waterfall-laced mountains. While the town’s amenities are modest—a small boat harbor, a couple of local eateries serving fresh halibut, and the Prince William Sound Museum—its true value lies in what surrounds it.
The primary reason to linger is to explore the majesty of Prince William Sound. Unlike the waters of the Inside Passage, this region is renowned for its sheer density of tidewater glaciers. Day cruises departing directly from Whittier’s harbor navigate deep, protected fjords to the faces of glaciers that actively calve building-sized chunks of ice into the sea. The sound of cracking ice, known locally as 'white thunder,' is unforgettable. These tours, such as the popular 26 Glacier Cruise, also offer outstanding opportunities to see wildlife, including dense colonies of sea otters, harbor seals, Dall's porpoises, and migrating whales.

The only road access is through the 2.5-mile-long Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, a one-lane marvel that alternates vehicle and train traffic on a strict schedule. Rushing from the ship to a bus for a 90-minute transfer to the Anchorage airport (ANC) bypasses the very essence of this region. A one- or two-night extension allows you to decompress and immerse yourself in Alaska on your own terms.

Upon disembarking, check your main luggage with a local tour operator or storage service. Embark on a 4-5 hour glacier and wildlife cruise into Prince William Sound. You’ll be back by late afternoon.
