PROGRAM PURPOSE

Physicians, nurses and support staff have numerous roles and responsibilities which facilitate patient care, satisfaction, and adherence. The presence of expanding technologies, notably electronic medical records, have put increasing demands on expertise as well as taking far more time. This makes it challenging to meet the important aspect of patient-centered care. Patients today can be difficult to manage, demanding, and often quote inaccurate information gleamed online. In addition, test results need to be presented in a timely manner while simultaneously requiring empathic skills when delivering bad news. While treatment advances have increased survival rates for many patients, explaining complex treatment regimens and the potential costs is time consuming and stressful.
With the recent WHO acknowledgement of burnout as a disease, more attention is being paid to the physical and psychological demands of being a healthcare professional. Physicians and nurses report increasing levels of job dissatisfaction, physical symptoms such as insomnia, headaches, fatigue, back and neck pain and gastrointestinal distress, and psychological symptoms such as anxiety, irritability, and depression.
  1. Recognizing and treating symptoms of burnout
    • List the physical, psychological and behavioral symptoms of burnout
    • Apply mind/body strategies to reduce/prevent burnout in clinicians as well as decreasing stress-related symptoms in both clinicians and patients
  2. Provide a patient-centered care experience
    • List examples of the concepts of patient-centered care and the strategies to optimize patient care through empathic communication, knowledge of how to handle difficult patients, and best methods on delivering bad news
  3. How to communicate with difficult patients
    • Apply techniques to manage difficult patients encountered in clinical practices focusing on empathic skills communication
  4. Counseling issues for delivering good and bad news
    • Develop and improve clinician skills when discussing test results with patients, with an emphasis on appropriate delivery of bad news
  5. Utilizing empathic communication with patients
    • Cite the research on empathic communication and methods of delivery
  6. Managing patient expectations
    • Identify techniques to improve overall patient care and delivery
  7. Models of practice and counseling interventions
    • Describe the most effective empirical counseling interventions
  8. Integrating mindfulness into one's daily life
    • Be able to initiate a personal mindfulness practice and have the skills to explain mindfulness to patients
  9. The impact of AI on the psychological care of patients
    • Discern the advantages and challenges of integrating AI into medicine and psychosocial care of patients

PORTS OF CALL

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Amsterdam is far more than a place to begin your voyage; it is the perfect prologue to your European discovery. As an embarkation port, it offers a unique opportunity to unwind from your travels and immerse yourself in one of Europe’s most enchanting cities before you even step aboard. We strongly encourage you to arrive a day or two early, transforming a simple travel day into a rich, restorative experience that sets the tone for the journey ahead.

Upon arriving at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS), you’ll find the transition into the city seamless. A short and efficient train ride delivers you directly to Centraal Station, the city’s vibrant heart. From here, the city’s treasures are at your feet. Arriving early provides a crucial buffer against potential travel delays and allows you to acclimate to the new time zone, ensuring you board your ship feeling refreshed and ready to engage with your conference sessions.

**Your Pre-Cruise Amsterdam Itinerary**

**Day 1: Arrival & Canal-Side Immersion**

After checking into your hotel, resist the urge for a nap. Instead, embrace the city’s energy with a gentle introduction. The best way to orient yourself and appreciate Amsterdam’s unique topography is from the water. A canal cruise is an essential first activity; gliding beneath historic bridges and alongside the iconic 17th-century gabled houses of the Grachtengordel (Canal Ring), a UNESCO World-hertitage site, is both relaxing and utterly captivating. It’s the perfect, low-effort way to absorb the city’s atmosphere after a long flight.

Disembark and allow yourself to get lost in the Jordaan district. Once a working-class neighborhood, it is now a charming labyrinth of narrow streets, tranquil canals, independent art galleries, and unique boutiques. Duck into a traditional *bruin café* (brown café) for a local beer or coffee. These cozy, wood-paneled pubs are the living rooms of the city and offer a taste of authentic Amsterdam *gezelligheid*—a Dutch quality of convivial coziness.

For dinner, consider an Indonesian *rijsttafel* (“rice table”). This elaborate meal, a culinary legacy of the Dutch colonial era, features dozens of small, flavorful dishes and is a memorable cultural and dining experience. It’s a wonderful way to connect with a significant part of Dutch history.

**Day 2: A Masterclass in Art & History**

Dedicate your morning to the Museumplein (Museum Quarter), home to a trio of world-class institutions. To make the most of your time, book tickets online well in advance.

* **The Rijksmuseum:** This is the national museum of the Netherlands, and its grand halls tell the story of 800 years of Dutch art and history. Stand in awe before Rembrandt’s monumental “The Night Watch” and lose yourself in the serene, light-filled domestic scenes of Vermeer. It’s an experience that is both intellectually stimulating and deeply moving.
* **The Van Gogh Museum:** Home to the world’s largest collection of Vincent van Gogh’s work, this museum offers an intimate and powerful journey through the artist’s life and evolution. Witness his vibrant genius and emotional turmoil through masterpieces like “Sunflowers” and “The Potato Eaters.”
* **Anne Frank House:** A visit here is a poignant and essential experience. Step behind the bookcase into the secret annex where Anne and her family hid for two years. This is a powerful moment of reflection on history that resonates long after you leave. Tickets sell out months in advance, so booking this is the first thing you should do when planning your pre-cruise stay.

In the afternoon, explore on foot. For shopping, bypass the main commercial streets and head to De Negen Straatjes (“The Nine Streets”). This delightful micro-neighborhood is filled with vintage shops, designer boutiques, and specialty stores. Along the way, be sure to stop at a street stand for a warm, fresh *stroopwafel*—a caramel-filled waffle cookie that is a true taste of Holland.

As your pre-cruise stay concludes, you’ll find the transfer to the cruise terminal is simple and efficient. You will arrive at the port not with the fatigue of a long-haul flight, but with the enrichment of a cultural deep-dive, ready to begin the next phase of your adventure with a clear mind and an inspired spirit.

At Sea - Cruising

Alesund, Norway

Alesund is a testament to resilience and artistic vision, a town reborn from the ashes of a devastating 1904 fire. In a remarkably short period, it was rebuilt entirely in the Art Nouveau style, creating a unique architectural harmony that defines the city today. The port is compact and exceptionally walkable, making independent exploration both easy and rewarding. The primary pleasure here is simply to wander. Stroll along the Brosundet canal and through the town center, admiring the whimsical turrets, spires, and ornate facades that make every street a discovery. The atmosphere is calm and scenic, a place to be absorbed rather than rushed. For a deeper appreciation of the town's history, the Jugendstilsenteret (Art Nouveau Centre) provides fascinating context on this architectural movement.

The definitive Alesund experience is the ascent to the Aksla viewpoint. A climb of 418 steps from the town park leads to Fjellstua, where you are rewarded with one of Norway’s most photographed panoramas—a breathtaking view of the town spread across its islands, with the Sunnmøre Alps and the open sea beyond. It is well worth the effort. For those preferring a less strenuous route, a taxi or the small city train can also provide access to the summit.

While the town’s architecture is the main draw, the Atlantic Sea Park, a short bus or taxi ride away, is one of Northern Europe's finest aquariums and offers an excellent look at North Atlantic marine life. As the gateway to the magnificent Geirangerfjord, Alesund provides a perfect, culturally rich introduction to the dramatic landscapes of western Norway.

Olden, Norway

Olden is less a destination in itself and more a breathtaking gateway to some of Norway’s most dramatic natural landscapes. The tiny village, home to a few hundred people, sits quietly at the head of the Nordfjord, completely dwarfed by the immense, green-shouldered mountains that rise from the water's edge.

The primary draw here is the journey to the Briksdal Glacier (Briksdalsbreen), a spectacular arm of the vast Jostedalsbreen ice cap. The trip inland is an experience, culminating in a walk or a ride on an electric "troll car" to a viewpoint of the glacier's blue-tinged icefall, which tumbles down a rugged valley into a milky-green lake.

For a different, equally stunning perspective, the nearby Loen Skylift offers a thrilling ascent to the top of Mount Hoven. In just five minutes, you are transported over 3,300 feet for panoramic views of the fjord, mountains, and valleys—a truly unforgettable vista. Alternatively, a more serene excursion to the emerald waters of Lovatnet (Loen Lake) reveals a place of profound beauty and poignant history. While Olden itself offers little more than a few souvenir shops, its true value lies in providing direct access to the raw, powerful, and accessible beauty of the Norwegian wilderness.

Molde, Norway

Molde is a port where the surrounding landscape is the undeniable star. Known as the “City of Roses,” this small, pleasant town serves as your gateway to some of Norway’s most dramatic coastal scenery. The absolute must-do is the Varden viewpoint, a short drive from the port. From here, you’ll witness the legendary “Molde Panorama”—a staggering vista of 222 snow-dusted mountain peaks arrayed across the fjord. It’s a genuinely breathtaking sight that makes the stop worthwhile on its own.

For those seeking a world-class experience, Molde is the launching point for the Atlantic Ocean Road. This astonishing feat of engineering is a drive you will never forget, as the road leaps between islands via a series of spectacular bridges that curve and dip over the open sea. It’s one of the most beautiful drives on the planet and the premier excursion here. If you prefer to stay in town, the Romsdal Museum is an excellent open-air folk museum offering a walkable tour through the region’s architectural history. Molde is not a bustling city, but a peaceful base for experiencing raw, magnificent Norwegian nature.

Stavanger, Norway

Stavanger presents a compelling duality: a charming, walkable city core that also serves as the gateway to some of Norway’s most dramatic fjord landscapes. Your ship docks just steps from Gamle Stavanger (Old Stavanger), a beautifully preserved settlement of 18th-century white wooden houses lining cobblestone lanes. It’s one of the most picturesque and accessible old towns in the country. A short walk away, the vibrant Øvre Holmegate, known as the 'street of colors,' offers a lively contrast with its brightly painted buildings housing independent shops and cafes.

The city itself holds noteworthy attractions, including the Stavanger Cathedral, Norway’s best-preserved medieval cathedral, and the surprisingly engaging Norwegian Petroleum Museum, which chronicles the industry that shaped modern Norway.

However, the main draw for many is the legendary Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock), a massive cliff with a flat top towering nearly 2,000 feet over the Lysefjord. It is essential to set realistic expectations for this excursion. Reaching the summit is not a casual walk; it is a strenuous, demanding 5-mile round-trip hike that takes 4-5 hours over steep, uneven terrain. This is a full-day commitment suitable only for physically fit individuals with proper hiking shoes. The reward is one of the most breathtaking views in the world. For those who prefer a less strenuous day or have limited mobility, a fjord cruise offers a fantastic alternative, providing spectacular views of Pulpit Rock from the water below. Stavanger excels by offering both a delightful urban experience and a launchpad for an unforgettable natural adventure.
