PORTS OF CALL

Boston, Massachusetts

Boston is far more than a departure point; it’s the prologue to your grand voyage, a city that deserves to be experienced, not just seen from a taxi window. As your travel advocates, our strongest advice is this: fly in at least a day or two early. Treating Boston as merely a logistical stop is a missed opportunity. Arriving ahead of schedule isn't just a practical buffer against flight delays or lost luggage—it’s an investment in starting your vacation relaxed, immersed, and inspired.

This is one of America’s most significant and walkable cities, where centuries of history are etched into the brick sidewalks and modern life buzzes in world-class restaurants and contemporary art spaces. It’s a city that rewards curiosity, and a pre-cruise stay allows you to explore it on your own terms.

**Getting Your Bearings**

From Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), you have several excellent options. The most scenic is the water taxi, which offers a stunning introduction to the city skyline as it zips you to downtown landings. For pure efficiency, the MBTA's Silver Line bus is a free (from the airport) and direct route to the Seaport District and South Station. Of course, taxis and ride-sharing services are readily available. We recommend staying in the Seaport for modern hotels and proximity to the cruise terminal, or in Back Bay for classic brownstone charm and access to shopping and parks.

**A Suggested 24-Hour Boston Immersion**

**Morning: Walk Through History**

Start your day where America did. The 2.5-mile Freedom Trail is not a stuffy history lesson; it’s an engaging, self-guided walk through the heart of the revolution. Follow the red brick line from the tranquil Boston Common, past the gold-domed State House, and into the Granary Burying Ground, the final resting place of Paul Revere, Samuel Adams, and John Hancock. The trail leads you to Faneuil Hall, a historic meeting place now surrounded by the bustling Quincy Market. While certainly tourist-focused, the market is an excellent, no-fuss lunch stop. Grab a classic lobster roll or a bowl of New England clam chowder and soak in the lively atmosphere.

**Afternoon: The Charm of the North End & Beacon Hill**

From Faneuil Hall, cross the Greenway into the North End, Boston’s vibrant “Little Italy.” The streets narrow, the architecture shifts, and the air fills with the scent of espresso and garlic. Here you’ll find the Paul Revere House and the Old North Church of “one if by land, two if by sea” fame. It feels like a village unto itself.

Afterward, make your way to Beacon Hill. This is the Boston of postcards: steep streets lined with gas lamps, elegant brick rowhouses, and hidden gardens. A walk down Acorn Street, one of the most photographed lanes in the country, is a must for its quintessential colonial charm.

**Evening: An Authentic Italian Dinner**

Return to the North End for dinner. This is an essential Boston experience, but a little planning goes a long way. The neighborhood’s tiny, family-owned restaurants are legendary, and reservations are absolutely critical, often weeks in advance. Whether you seek a classic “red sauce” joint or a more modern interpretation of Italian cuisine, the quality and authenticity are exceptional. A pre-dinner cannoli from either Mike’s Pastry or Modern Pastry (the city’s great debate) is a non-negotiable rite of passage.

**If You Have a Second Day**

With more time, you can explore further. Art lovers should head to the magnificent Museum of Fine Arts or the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, a stunning Venetian-style palace with an eclectic collection and a fascinating story of the world’s largest unsolved art heist. For a different perspective, explore the chic boutiques and galleries of the South End, or cross the Charles River to Cambridge to wander the hallowed grounds of Harvard University.

By the time you board your ship, you won’t just be departing from a city; you’ll be carrying with you the spirit of a place that shaped a nation. You’ll be more relaxed, more enriched, and ready for the journey ahead. That is the value of arriving early.

Rockland, Maine

Rockland offers a genuine slice of coastal Maine life, where a working harbor's grit meets a surprisingly sophisticated art scene. This is not a town of grand monuments, but one of authentic character, best explored on foot from the harbor. The undisputed cultural highlight is the Farnsworth Art Museum, home to an exceptional collection of American art with a focus on artists connected to Maine, including three generations of the Wyeth family. For a dose of maritime history, the Maine Lighthouse Museum provides context for the coastline's iconic beacons.
The town's most memorable experience might be the walk along the nearly mile-long granite breakwater to the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, offering panoramic views of Penobscot Bay. Back in town, Main Street is lined with independent galleries and unique shops. Of course, a visit is incomplete without indulging in the local specialty. Rockland is the heart of lobster country, and enjoying a fresh lobster roll from a dockside eatery is an essential part of the experience. It’s a port for a relaxed day of art, sea air, and authentic flavor.

Halifax, Nova Scotia

Halifax is a port city that feels immediately accessible and authentic, its identity deeply intertwined with the sea. Ships dock conveniently near the city center, allowing for an easy, independent exploration of its historic core. The waterfront boardwalk is the natural starting point, a vibrant pathway lined with restored warehouses now housing artisan shops, galleries, and pubs. The air here carries the scent of salt and fried fish, setting a distinctly maritime tone.

A short walk from the piers, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic offers compelling exhibits that connect directly to the city’s soul. Its collection includes poignant artifacts from the Titanic disaster—as Halifax was the primary recovery base—and a moving account of the catastrophic 1917 Halifax Explosion. This is not a trivial museum; it’s a powerful look into the events that shaped the North Atlantic.

For a commanding view and a dose of military history, a steady uphill walk leads to the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site. This star-shaped fort has guarded the harbor for centuries. The noon gun is a daily tradition, and the costumed interpreters portraying the 78th Highlanders bring the past to life. Back at sea level, the Victorian-era Public Gardens offer a serene and beautifully maintained contrast to the bustling waterfront.

While the iconic Peggy’s Cove lighthouse is a popular excursion, Halifax itself offers more than enough to fill a day. The city’s appeal lies in its blend of significant history, a lively but relaxed pub culture, and a genuine, unpretentious welcome.

Sydney, Nova Scotia

Sydney serves as the welcoming gateway to Cape Breton Island, a place where rugged coastal beauty and deep-rooted Gaelic history converge. The town itself is modest, centered around a pleasant waterfront promenade and the world's largest fiddle—a perfect spot for a quick photo. The true value of a day here, however, lies in venturing beyond the city limits.

Visitors face a compelling choice between two distinct, high-quality experiences. You can journey back to the 18th century at the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site. This is not a ruin, but a meticulous, full-scale reconstruction of a French fortified town where you can walk the streets, interact with costumed interpreters, and gain a tangible sense of life in 1744. It’s an immersive and educational experience, particularly for those with an interest in North American history.

Alternatively, you can experience a segment of the world-renowned Cabot Trail. A day trip allows for a drive along a dramatic portion of this coastal route, revealing stunning ocean vistas, highland scenery, and a glimpse into the island's enduring Scottish heritage. It’s an opportunity to appreciate the wild, natural character that defines Cape Breton. A day in Sydney is best spent choosing one of these significant excursions.

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

Charlottetown offers a disarmingly pleasant and walkable experience right from the port. As Canada's "Birthplace of Confederation," its history is felt in the stately Victorian architecture and grand public squares, all easily explored on foot. The downtown core is compact and inviting; a stroll down the brick-paved Victoria Row, a seasonal pedestrian street lined with galleries, boutiques, and cafes, is a perfect introduction to the city's relaxed pace.

For many, the main draw lies just outside the city in the rolling countryside that inspired L.M. Montgomery's *Anne of Green Gables*. Reaching the iconic Green Gables Heritage Place requires a dedicated excursion, but it is an essential pilgrimage for literary fans. Back in town, the culinary scene is a genuine highlight. Prince Edward Island is renowned for its seafood, and sampling fresh mussels or a classic lobster roll provides an authentic taste of the island. Charlottetown is not a bustling metropolis; its considerable appeal lies in its gentle rhythm, historic charm, and the simple pleasures of a well-preserved seaside capital.

Gulf Of St. Lawrence

It's important to understand that the Gulf of St. Lawrence isn't a port of call, but rather a magnificent day of scenic cruising. Think of it as the destination itself—a day to relax on deck and witness the immense scale of Eastern Canada's maritime landscape. As your ship navigates this vast inland sea, the world's largest estuary, you're tracing the historic entry point into the continent.

The experience is one of quiet observation and natural grandeur. Keep your binoculars ready, as this is a rich marine ecosystem. Depending on the season and your route, you may spot minke or fin whales, pods of dolphins, and colonies of seals on distant shores. The distant, rugged coastlines of Quebec, Newfoundland, and the Maritime provinces unfold, dotted with remote fishing villages and lonely lighthouses that stand as monuments to the region's formidable seafaring history. This is a day to appreciate the journey, enjoy the ship's amenities with a dramatic natural backdrop, and understand the sheer wildness that defines this beautiful part of the world.

Saint Lawrence River

A day cruising the Saint Lawrence River is a welcome change of pace—it’s not a port of call, but a journey through the very heart of French Canada. We advise clients to treat this as a day of active relaxation: find a comfortable deck chair, perhaps with a coffee or cocktail, and simply watch the landscape unfold. As you sail from the narrower passages near Montreal or Quebec City, the river gradually widens into a massive seaway, giving you a true sense of the region's immense scale. The shoreline is a lovely tapestry of rolling hills, historic farms, and charming villages, each marked by the distinctive silver steeple of its church. This is living history, seen from a unique perspective.

The real highlight for many, however, is the wildlife. Keep your binoculars ready, especially as you approach the mouth of the Saguenay Fjord, a world-renowned marine park. It’s common to spot pods of bright white beluga whales and even larger minke or fin whales feeding in the nutrient-rich waters. This transit day provides a beautiful, relaxing context for the ports you visit, revealing the waterway that shaped the history and culture of Quebec.

Quebec City, Quebec, Canada

As your cruise concludes along the majestic St. Lawrence River, consider your arrival in Quebec City not as an end, but as the beginning of a captivating epilogue to your journey. While your time at sea was dedicated to professional enrichment, this is your opportunity for personal discovery in a city that feels like a European sojourn, without the transatlantic flight. We strongly encourage you to extend your stay for one to three days to truly savor the soul of French Canada.

Few places in North America are as steeped in history as Québec City. Older than Jamestown and founded before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, it is the only city north of Mexico whose original fortifications remain intact. The Québec City historic district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is still home to religious orders and hospitals that date back to the 17th century. Disembarking here offers a seamless transition from your ship into the heart of this living museum.

**A Suggested Post-Cruise Itinerary:**

**Day 1: Immersion in Old Québec**

After disembarking, a short taxi ride will bring you to your accommodations. Consider a boutique hotel nestled within the historic walls or the grandeur of the iconic Fairmont Le Château Frontenac. Once settled, your exploration begins on foot—the only way to truly appreciate the city’s charm.

Start in the Lower Town (Basse-Ville). Wander the cobblestone lanes of the Quartier Petit Champlain, one of North America’s oldest commercial streets. Here, artisan boutiques, art galleries, and inviting bistros are tucked into beautifully preserved 17th- and 18th-century buildings. Its Place-Royale, the very spot where Samuel de Champlain founded the city in 1608, would look familiar to the explorer, even with its modern attractions of gift shops and cafés. Don’t miss the massive Fresque des Québécois, a stunning mural depicting centuries of the city’s history.

For lunch, find a cozy café for a croque-monsieur or a bowl of French onion soup. In the afternoon, ride the historic Funicular up to the Upper Town (Haute-Ville) and stroll along the Dufferin Terrace. This expansive boardwalk offers breathtaking, panoramic views of the St. Lawrence River, the Lower Town, and the surrounding landscape. For dinner, indulge in the classic French-Canadian cuisine at a restaurant in the Old City, where dishes like duck confit, tourtière (meat pie), or fresh local game are served in a romantic, historic setting.

**Day 2: Of Battles, Views, and Modern Flavors**

Begin your morning with a walk to the Plains of Abraham, the historic battleground where, in 1759, the French forces under General Montcalm were decisively trounced by the British, led by General Wolfe. Today, this sprawling urban park is a beautiful green space perfect for a reflective walk. Adjacent to the Plains is the Citadelle de Québec, an active military installation and the largest British fortress built in North America. If you time your visit right during the summer, you can witness the traditional Changing of the Guard ceremony.

In the afternoon, delve deeper into the Upper Town. Visit the magnificent Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica-Cathedral, a national historic site, and the tranquil gardens of the Hôtel-de-Ville (City Hall). For a different perspective, consider a guided walking tour that illuminates the city’s four centuries of history, from its military past to its architectural evolution.

For the evening, step outside the main tourist hub and explore the vibrant Saint-Roch or Saint-Jean-Baptiste neighborhoods. Here, you’ll find a more contemporary dining scene, with innovative chefs, craft breweries, and lively bistros favored by locals. It’s the perfect way to experience the modern pulse of this historic city.

**Day 3: Natural Wonders or Artistic Treasures & Departure**

On your final day, choose your own adventure. For a dose of nature’s drama, take a short taxi or bus ride to Parc de la Chute-Montmorency. At 83 meters (272 feet), these powerful falls are a full 30 meters higher than Niagara Falls. A cable car can whisk you to the top for spectacular views and a walk across a suspension bridge that spans the roaring cascade.

Alternatively, immerse yourself in art at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (MNBAQ), which features an outstanding and comprehensive collection of Québécois art from the 17th century to the present day. The modern Pierre Lassonde Pavilion is an architectural masterpiece in itself.

After a final lunch and some last-minute shopping for maple syrup products or local crafts, it’s time to depart. Québec City Jean Lesage International Airport (YQB) is a straightforward 20-30 minute taxi or ride-share journey from the city center. Your extended stay will leave you culturally enriched and thoroughly refreshed, a well-deserved reward before returning to the demands of your practice.

Allianz Travel Insurance plans can provide you benefits and professional support when a covered situation comes up before or during your trip. The following examples may qualify for benefits:

  • Cancelling your trip after unexpectedly becoming too sick to travel
  • Taking care of a sick or injured traveling companion
  • Having to end your trip early due to a family emergency
  • Dealing with a flight delay or cancellation
  • Needing to buy personal items if your luggage is lost or stolen
  • Missing your cruise departure after a covered flight delay

You also can contact our travel protection partner Allianz Global Assistance’s 24/7, award-winning customer service for on-the-go assistance with issues like a medical emergency, replacing your lost passport, or making reservations around the world. Specific plan benefits may vary. Please review your plan details for more information.

What Can Travel Insurance Help Protect?

Allianz Travel Insurance plans can protect you before and during your trip—keeping you, your loved ones, and your travel budget safer. Benefits vary by plan, and these are brief descriptions. Please read your plan documents for details.

TRIP CANCELLATION

Reimburses your prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason, such as you, a family member, or traveling companion experiencing a covered illness or injury. Examples include:

  • A doctor says you or a traveling companion is too sick to fly
  • Your parent or child requires hospitalization
  • You need to attend the birth of a family member’s child
  • You have a traffic accident (not breakdown) on the way to the airport
  • A storm shuts down your airport for 24 hours or more

TRIP INTERRUPTION

Reimburses your unused, non-refundable travel expenses and increased transportation costs during your trip if you have to return home early due to a covered reason, for instance when a family member has a qualifying medical emergency and needs your care. Examples include:

  • You have a covered illness or injury and a doctor says you must return home
  • A family member has a qualifying injury and needs your care
  • A covered emergency, like a fire or flood, makes your home uninhabitable

TRAVEL DELAY

If you have a covered delay while traveling, travel insurance can reimburse you for meals, accommodations, and transportation expenses when your trip is delayed for a minimum number of consecutive hours for a covered reason. Minimum number of hours varies by plan.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE

Reimburses your expenses related to covered medical and dental emergencies* that might occur on your trip. This benefit can be especially helpful if you have a covered emergency outside the United States, as most health insurance policies won’t cover you outside the country. Examples include:

  • You slip and break your ankle while sightseeing
  • You get food poisoning while sampling the local cuisine
  • You lose a filling and need immediate dental treatment*

*A sublimit and maximum apply for this benefit. Check your plan documents for details.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION

Arranges and pays for medically necessary transportation following a covered injury or illness to the nearest appropriate medical facility to receive care and get you home after treatment.

BAGGAGE LOSS, DAMAGE, or THEFT

Reimburses the replacement of your lost, damaged, or stolen luggage and personal items while traveling.

BAGGAGE DELAY

Reimburses essential items purchased during your trip if your baggage is delayed for a minimum number of hours (varies by plan).

CHANGE FEE

Reimburses fees if you need to change your flight itinerary due to a covered reason.

24-HOUR ASSISTANCE

Provides around-the-clock support during your trip. Allianz Global Assistance’s staff of multilingual problem solvers can help you with medical, legal, and travel-related emergencies whenever they happen. Medical assistance may include, but is not limited to:

  • Ongoing medical monitoring
  • Payment guarantee

Additional services for travel-related emergencies can help with:

  • Missed connecting flights
