Eileen L. Kalmar, Ph.D.
Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Biomedical Education & Anatomy, The Ohio State University College of Medicine
Dr. Kalmar earned her doctorate in Neurobiology and Anatomy from the University of Rochester, NY in 1993. With that training, Dr. Kalmar has taught anatomy, histology, embryology and neuroanatomy at the undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate levels. Currently, she is involved with both dental and medical student education and curricula, advanced head and neck anatomy for dental residents, graduate anatomy student education and continuing education programs. In addition, Dr. Kalmar has designed and led several innovative Head and Neck Anatomy continuing education courses for dental and medical professionals.
Dr. Kalmar has served as the Director for Anatomy Dental Education at Ohio State as well as Director of the University’s Body Donation Program. Over the years, her excellence in teaching has led to numerous awards, including the Distinguished Educator Award in the College of Medicine for 2022-2023.

Dr. Kalmar received his DMD from Southern Illinois University. Following residencies in hospital dentistry (UNC-Chapel Hill) and oral pathology (Emory), he received a PhD in Experimental Pathology (Emory). From 1992-9, Dr. Kalmar served on the faculty of the Department of Pathology, University of Rochester and the Eastman Dental Center in Rochester, NY. In 1999, he joined the faculty at Ohio State and has served the Buckeyes in multiple roles since that time, including Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
Dr. Kalmar is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology (ABOMP) and a member of the Editorial Board of Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology and Oral Radiology. He is a Past President of the American Academy of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology (AAOMP) and the ABOMP. Dr. Kalmar has published over 80 manuscripts and book chapters and enjoys providing continuing education to a wide variety of professional audiences.

Honolulu is far more than a starting point; it’s an essential part of the Hawaiian experience. As the embarkation and debarkation port for your journey, it offers the perfect opportunity to acclimate to the islands’ rhythm before you sail and to savor one last taste of paradise upon your return. We strongly recommend adding at least two to three days at either end of your cruise to fully appreciate the depth and diversity of Oahu.
**Pre-Cruise: History, Culture, and Urban Energy**
Arriving a few days early allows you to overcome jet lag and immerse yourself in the pivotal history that shaped not just Hawaii, but the world. A visit to Pearl Harbor is a sobering and essential experience. The site consists of several distinct memorials, and planning is key. Tickets to the USS Arizona Memorial program are free but must be reserved well in advance online; they are released in windows, so check the official recreation.gov site for details. Beyond the Arizona, you can explore the Battleship Missouri Memorial (“Mighty Mo”), where the surrender documents ending WWII were signed, and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum. Give this a full morning, at minimum.
From there, explore the civic heart of Honolulu. Downtown is home to the Iolani Palace, the only official royal residence in the United States and a beautifully restored testament to the Kingdom of Hawaii’s sophisticated monarchy. Across the street stands the iconic King Kamehameha I statue. This area provides a crucial context for understanding modern Hawaii that you won’t find in a resort lobby. For a taste of the contemporary art scene, the Hawaii State Art Museum offers a superb collection of works by local artists.
As evening approaches, venture into the vibrant Kaka'ako or Chinatown districts for dinner. These neighborhoods have shed their industrial pasts to become culinary hotspots, filled with innovative restaurants, craft breweries, and unique boutiques that stand in stark contrast to the more tourist-focused Waikiki. It’s an authentic glimpse into modern Honolulu life.
**Waikiki and Diamond Head: The Icons**
No visit is complete without experiencing Waikiki, but it’s best approached with clear eyes. The world-famous crescent of sand is undeniably beautiful, especially at sunrise, but it is also one of the most popular and crowded beaches on the planet. Enjoy a morning stroll, take a surfing lesson in its gentle waves, and then explore what lies beyond the sand.
One of the most rewarding activities is the hike to the summit of Diamond Head (Lēʻahi). The trail, a mix of paved paths and steep stairs, ascends the crater wall to offer one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of Waikiki and the Pacific. A reservation system is now in place for out-of-state visitors to manage crowds, so booking your time slot online is mandatory. It’s a moderately strenuous walk, best done in the cool of the early morning.
**Post-Cruise: Decompression and Natural Wonders**
After your cruise, use your extra days to explore the rest of Oahu. This is where a rental car becomes invaluable. A drive to the North Shore is a pilgrimage for any surf enthusiast, but its appeal is universal. In winter, the waves at Waimea Bay, Sunset Beach, and the Banzai Pipeline are monstrous and awe-inspiring. In summer, the ocean calms, offering beautiful swimming conditions. The vibe here is relaxed and rustic. Stop in the charming town of Haleiwa for gallery hopping and a classic Hawaiian shave ice at Matsumoto or Aoki's. The real culinary draw, however, is the collection of food trucks, most famously the garlic shrimp trucks in Kahuku.
For a different perspective, drive along the windward (east) coast. The scenery here is dramatic and lush, with the fluted, emerald cliffs of the Koʻolau Range plunging toward the sea. This route takes you past stunning beaches like Lanikai and Kailua, whose calm, turquoise waters are perfect for kayaking or paddleboarding. You can also visit Kualoa Ranch, a private nature reserve where numerous films, including Jurassic Park, were filmed, offering tours via horseback, ATV, or bus.

Throughout your stay, make it a point to explore the local food culture. Your day here is a matter of choosing a direction, as the island’s diverse regions offer distinctly different adventures.
For a truly immersive, full-day commitment, two iconic journeys beckon. The Road to Hana is a winding, 64-mile drive through a lush rainforest, past cascading waterfalls and dramatic coastal cliffs—an experience more about the journey than the destination. Alternatively, ascend to the summit of Haleakalā, the "House of the Sun." This dormant volcano offers an otherworldly, cloud-level perspective of a vast crater, a stark and beautiful landscape unlike any other. Due to their length and complexity, pre-arranged tours are the most efficient way to experience these wonders from a cruise ship.
For a less demanding but equally rewarding day, explore the Iao Valley State Monument, a sacred and verdant valley featuring the iconic Kīpuka Puaulu (Iao Needle). Nearby, the bohemian surf town of Paia offers unique shops and a relaxed vibe, while further upcountry, Makawao provides a glimpse into Maui's paniolo (cowboy) heritage with its charming boutiques and galleries. Please be mindful that West Maui, including the historic town of Lahaina, is in a long-term recovery phase following the 2023 wildfires. Visitors are encouraged to explore the many other beautiful and welcoming areas of the island.
Hilo, Hawaii Island
Hilo offers a glimpse into the untamed, elemental side of Hawaii, a world away from manicured resorts. As the island's lush, rain-fed capital, it serves as the primary gateway to the geological marvel of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. A visit here is the undisputed main event, but requires commitment: it's a 45- to 60-minute drive each way. Once there, you can walk through the otherworldly Thurston Lava Tube, witness steam billowing from volcanic vents, and gaze into the immense Kīlauea caldera. It is essential to set expectations: visible lava flows are rare and unpredictable, but the raw power of the landscape is always palpable. For those seeking a less time-intensive day, Hilo’s immediate surroundings are rich with natural beauty. Just minutes from the port, Rainbow Falls offers a lovely and accessible viewpoint. For a more dramatic experience, a short drive north leads to ʻAkaka Falls State Park, where a towering waterfall plunges into a gorge. Kona, Hawaii Island
Kona offers a genuine taste of old Hawaii, distinct from the state's more modern resort centers. As a tender port, you arrive directly into the heart of the walkable seaside town of Kailua-Kona. While the town itself has its charms, including the historic Huliheʻe Palace and Mokuʻaikaua Church, Kona’s most profound experiences lie along its sun-drenched coast and in the cool uplands.
The region is, of course, synonymous with coffee. A short drive or tour into the hills of Holualoa reveals the Kona Coffee Belt, where numerous small, family-run farms welcome visitors. Here, you can walk through the coffee groves, learn about the bean-to-cup process, and sample some of the world's most prized coffee at its source. This is an authentic agricultural and culinary experience.
For a deep dive into Hawaiian culture, nothing compares to Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park, about a 45-minute drive south. This beautifully restored royal compound and sacred place of refuge offers a powerful, tangible connection to the island’s past. It is a quiet, spiritual place that rewards thoughtful exploration.
Water activities are centered around Kealakekua Bay, a protected marine life conservation district with exceptional snorkeling and diving. The bay is also the historic site where Captain James Cook was killed. Accessing the best snorkeling spots typically requires a boat tour, which is well worth the effort for the clarity of the water and abundance of marine life. Kona provides a compelling blend of significant history, world-class agriculture, and natural beauty, best accessed with a pre-arranged tour or rental car.
Nawiliwili, Kauai, Hawaii
Kauai is Hawaii’s oldest and most dramatic island, a landscape defined by staggering natural beauty rather than sprawling resorts. The port at Nawiliwili is the gateway to this 'Garden Isle,' though its greatest treasures require a journey inland or along its famed coastline.
Two experiences define Kauai's epic scale. The first is Waimea Canyon, a massive, 14-mile-long chasm often called the 'Grand Canyon of the Pacific.'
