PORTS OF CALL
Vancouver, British Columbia
**Getting Your Bearings: From Airport to City Center**
Upon arrival at Vancouver International Airport (YVR), the city is remarkably accessible. The most efficient and scenic option is the Canada Line SkyTrain, which whisks you from the airport to the downtown waterfront in under 30 minutes, offering glimpses of the city and mountains along the way. Taxis and ride-sharing services are also readily available, providing a seamless transition to your pre-cruise accommodations.
**A Suggested Two-Day Vancouver Immersion**
**Day 1: Arrival and Historic Charm**
After settling into your hotel, begin your exploration with a leisurely stroll along the Coal Harbour seawall. The path offers magnificent, unobstructed views of the North Shore mountains, the floatplanes gliding into the harbor, and the iconic white sails of Canada Place—the very terminal from which your cruise will depart. It’s the perfect, low-key activity to stretch your legs and breathe in the fresh Pacific air.
As evening approaches, step back in time in the historically renovated Gastown district. Vancouver's oldest neighborhood, with its cobblestone streets, Victorian architecture, and the world-famous Steam Clock, is now a hub of creativity and culinary excellence. Peruse independent boutiques and Indigenous art galleries before settling in for dinner. Gastown’s dining scene is a microcosm of Vancouver itself, offering everything from intimate, farm-to-table restaurants showcasing Pacific Northwest ingredients to innovative cocktail bars perfect for a pre-dinner aperitif. It’s a sophisticated, yet unpretentious, introduction to the city’s character.
**Day 2: Natural Wonders and a Feast for the Senses**
Dedicate your morning to a true urban oasis: Stanley Park. This 1,000-acre temperate rainforest, nestled near the city center, is a perfect recipe for rejuvenation. Rent a bicycle and join the locals on the famous Seawall, a paved path that encircles the park, offering stunning vistas at every turn. Be sure to stop at Brockton Point to admire the collection of intricately carved First Nations totem poles, a powerful and beautiful cultural landmark. For a different perspective, venture into the park’s deep forest trails for a quiet walk among towering cedars and Douglas firs.
In the afternoon, take a short ferry ride or drive to Granville Island. This is not a typical tourist trap, but a vibrant, thriving arts and food hub beloved by Vancouverites. The main attraction is the Public Market, a sensory delight brimming with local artisans, bakers, fishmongers, and produce stalls. Graze your way through lunch, sampling everything from candied salmon to artisanal cheeses and fresh-baked pastries. Beyond the market, explore the island’s many artist studios, craft breweries, and theaters. It’s an authentic slice of Vancouver life.
Depending on your interests, your late afternoon could include a visit to the Vancouver Art Gallery, a walk through the serene Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden in exotic Chinatown, or some retail therapy along the bustling Robson Street. From Vancouver's cosmopolitan downtown to its distinct neighborhoods, the city displays varied and engaging urban scenes.
**A Culinary Destination**
Vancouver’s culinary reputation is world-class, built on a foundation of fresh, local ingredients and its multicultural population. You cannot leave without sampling the local salmon, whether grilled to perfection or in world-class sushi. The city’s Asian culinary scene is arguably the best in North America, offering unparalleled dim sum, ramen, and a vast array of regional Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese cuisines. This is a city that rewards the curious palate.
By arriving early, you transform your embarkation day from a rush into a relaxed transition. You will have already experienced a destination in its own right, setting a tone of discovery and enjoyment for the voyage ahead.

Alaska Inside Passage
The primary activity here is observation, and it is absolutely captivating. Find a spot on deck or on your balcony—with good binoculars in hand—and prepare to be humbled. The silence of the fjords is often broken only by the cry of a bald eagle or the thunderous crack of a tidewater glacier calving into the sea. This is where you'll witness the famous 'glacial blue,' an ethereal color that glows from within massive ice fields like those in Glacier Bay or Tracy Arm Fjord.
Keep a constant watch on the water. The passage is a rich feeding ground for humpback whales, and seeing one breach is an unforgettable, heart-stopping moment. Pods of orcas are also a common sight, as are sea lions barking from rocky haul-outs. Look toward the shore, and you might even spot a brown bear foraging along the water's edge at low tide.
Our best advice is simple: dress in warm layers, get outside, and listen to the onboard naturalist's commentary, which adds invaluable context to the spectacle. This is a profound, meditative experience—a chance to disconnect and witness the raw, untamed power of nature in a way that few places on Earth can offer.
Ketchikan, Alaska
From the cruise dock, you're steps away from the town's most famous sight: Creek Street. This historic boardwalk, once the city's notorious red-light district, is now a charming collection of colorful stilted houses, galleries, and shops perched over the rushing creek. It’s an essential photo-op and a delightful place for a stroll, easily explored on your own.
To truly appreciate the region's soul, seek out the magnificent totem poles. The Totem Heritage Center, a manageable walk or short taxi ride from the port, houses a stunning collection of original 19th-century poles rescued from abandoned villages. It’s a quiet, powerful museum that offers deep insight into Native Alaskan artistry and tradition. For a more expansive outdoor setting, Totem Bight State Historical Park is another excellent choice, though it requires a short tour or taxi ride.
While the town is engaging, Ketchikan’s grandeur lies in the surrounding wilderness. For a truly unforgettable day, a floatplane or boat tour into the Misty Fjords National Monument is an unparalleled experience. These glacier-carved cliffs and serene waters are the Alaska you've dreamed of. For a more accessible nature fix, you can often spot salmon fighting their way upstream at the Ketchikan Creek fish ladder right in town during the summer season. Ketchikan is compact and can feel busy, but by focusing on either its rich cultural core or the spectacular nature at its doorstep, you'll find it a deeply rewarding port of call.
Juneau, Alaska
Beyond the glacier, Juneau is one of Alaska’s premier whale-watching destinations. The nutrient-rich waters of the Inside Passage are a summer feeding ground for humpback whales, and sightings are exceptionally common. For a different perspective, the Mount Roberts Tramway, which departs right from the cruise ship dock, whisks you 1,800 feet up for panoramic views of the Gastineau Channel and the surrounding Tongass National Forest.
The downtown area is compact, historic, and easily explored on foot. While it can be bustling with fellow cruisers, it’s worth a stroll down South Franklin Street to see the preserved architecture. For a dose of culture, the Alaska State Museum offers a superb collection of Native Alaskan and pioneer history. While the famous Red Dog Saloon is a lively and historic stop, for a more authentic taste of Juneau, seek out a local salmon bake. Juneau delivers exactly what you hope for in Alaska: breathtaking scenery and wildlife encounters that feel both grand and accessible.
Skagway, Alaska
However, to truly appreciate Skagway, you must see it as a gateway. The town itself is the prologue; the main story unfolds in the surrounding wilderness. The undisputed star attraction is the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad. This is not a simple scenic ride; it’s a vintage, narrow-gauge train that climbs nearly 3,000 feet in 20 miles, clinging to mountainsides and crossing dizzying trestles. The engineering is as breathtaking as the views of glaciers, gorges, and waterfalls. We consider this one of Alaska’s essential experiences.
For those seeking more active pursuits, Skagway delivers. Helicopter tours can land you on a glacier for a dog-sledding adventure, offering a perspective few ever witness. You can also hike a portion of the legendary Chilkoot Trail or take a high-speed catamaran down the Lynn Canal, North America's longest and deepest fjord. Our advice: Plan on one major excursion. Skagway’s in-town appeal is real but finite; its true value lies in the spectacular adventures that begin at its doorstep.
Glacier Bay
The stars of the show are the tidewater glaciers, particularly the brilliant blue face of the Margerie Glacier or the immense Johns Hopkins Glacier, choked with icebergs. The ship will often linger, rotating slowly to provide panoramic views as you listen for the sharp crack and subsequent roar—what locals call "white thunder"—as massive columns of ice shear off and crash into the sea.
Wildlife viewing is exceptional. Keep binoculars at hand for humpback whales lunge-feeding, sea otters floating effortlessly on their backs, and harbor seals hauled out on ice floes, their pups often in tow. Scan the steep, forested slopes for mountain goats and the occasional black or brown bear foraging along the shoreline. A highlight of the day is the presence of National Park Service Rangers who board the vessel. Their expert narration over the ship's system provides invaluable context on the geology, wildlife, and the deep cultural history of the Huna Tlingit people, transforming a beautiful view into a rich educational experience. This is a day to find a spot on deck, embrace the stillness, and watch a world of ice and wilderness unfold.
College Fjord
Whittier, Alaska
Whittier itself is one of the most peculiar towns in North America. A former top-secret Cold War military port, its identity is shaped by isolation and function. Nearly all of its few hundred residents live in a single high-rise, the Begich Towers, a surreal sight against a backdrop of hanging glaciers and steep, waterfall-laced mountains. While the town’s amenities are modest—a small boat harbor, a couple of local eateries serving fresh halibut, and the Prince William Sound Museum—its true value lies in what surrounds it.
The primary reason to linger is to explore the majesty of Prince William Sound. Unlike the waters of the Inside Passage, this region is renowned for its sheer density of tidewater glaciers. Day cruises departing directly from Whittier’s harbor navigate deep, protected fjords to the faces of glaciers that actively calve building-sized chunks of ice into the sea. The sound of cracking ice, known locally as 'white thunder,' is unforgettable. These tours, such as the popular 26 Glacier Cruise, also offer outstanding opportunities to see wildlife, including dense colonies of sea otters, harbor seals, Dall's porpoises, and migrating whales.
Beyond the Sound, the journey *from* Whittier is an experience in itself. The only road access is through the 2.5-mile-long Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, a one-lane marvel that alternates vehicle and train traffic on a strict schedule. Emerging from the tunnel, you are delivered onto the Seward Highway, a designated National Scenic Byway that winds along the breathtaking coast of Turnagain Arm. This drive is consistently ranked among the most beautiful in the United States, with pullouts for spotting Dall sheep on the cliffsides and beluga whales in the tidal flats.
For a truly classic Alaskan experience, we advise taking the Alaska Railroad's Glacier Discovery Route from Whittier to Anchorage. This is not mere transportation; it is a world-class scenic journey. From glass-domed railcars, you’ll witness a panorama of glaciers, deep valleys, and wild landscapes inaccessible by road, all while enjoying comfortable service. It’s a civilized and spectacular way to transition from sea to land.
**Why Extend Your Stay? A Sample 2-Day Post-Cruise Itinerary**
Rushing from the ship to a bus for a 90-minute transfer to the Anchorage airport (ANC) bypasses the very essence of this region. A one- or two-night extension allows you to decompress and immerse yourself in Alaska on your own terms.
* **Day 1: Glaciers of Prince William Sound.**
Upon disembarking, check your main luggage with a local tour operator or storage service. Embark on a 4-5 hour glacier and wildlife cruise into Prince William Sound. You’ll be back by late afternoon. Retrieve your bags and take the scenic evening train or a pre-booked shuttle along the Seward Highway to the resort town of Girdwood or directly to Anchorage for your overnight stay.
* **Day 2: Explore the Chugach or Anchorage.**
If staying in Girdwood, take the Alyeska Resort tram to the top of Mount Alyeska for stunning 360-degree views of Turnagain Arm and seven surrounding glaciers. Enjoy a hike or a memorable lunch at the Seven Glaciers restaurant. Alternatively, if in Anchorage, spend the day at the superb Anchorage Museum, which blends art, history, and science, or delve into indigenous culture at the Alaska Native Heritage Center. Enjoy Anchorage’s excellent and diverse dining scene before a restful night.
* **Day 3: Departure.**
Enjoy a leisurely morning before making the easy transfer to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) for your flight home, carrying with you a far more complete story of Alaska.
**Practical Advice:** Transportation from Whittier is limited and must be booked well in advance. Whether you choose the train, a motorcoach, or a rental car, reservations are essential, especially during peak season.

What Can Travel Insurance Help Protect?
Allianz Travel Insurance plans can protect you before and during your trip—keeping you, your loved ones, and your travel budget safer. Benefits vary by plan, and these are brief descriptions. Please read your plan documents for details.
TRIP CANCELLATION
Reimburses your prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason, such as you, a family member, or traveling companion experiencing a covered illness or injury. Examples include:
- A doctor says you or a traveling companion is too sick to fly
- Your parent or child requires hospitalization
- You need to attend the birth of a family member’s child
- You have a traffic accident (not breakdown) on the way to the airport
- A storm shuts down your airport for 24 hours or more
TRIP INTERRUPTION
Reimburses your unused, non-refundable travel expenses and increased transportation costs during your trip if you have to return home early due to a covered reason, for instance when a family member has a qualifying medical emergency and needs your care. Examples include:
- You have a covered illness or injury and a doctor says you must return home
- A family member has a qualifying injury and needs your care
- A covered emergency, like a fire or flood, makes your home uninhabitable
TRAVEL DELAY
If you have a covered delay while traveling, travel insurance can reimburse you for meals, accommodations, and transportation expenses when your trip is delayed for a minimum number of consecutive hours for a covered reason. Minimum number of hours varies by plan.
EMERGENCY MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE
Reimburses your expenses related to covered medical and dental emergencies* that might occur on your trip. This benefit can be especially helpful if you have a covered emergency outside the United States, as most health insurance policies won’t cover you outside the country. Examples include:
- You slip and break your ankle while sightseeing
- You get food poisoning while sampling the local cuisine
- You lose a filling and need immediate dental treatment*
*A sublimit and maximum apply for this benefit. Check your plan documents for details.
EMERGENCY MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION
Arranges and pays for medically necessary transportation following a covered injury or illness to the nearest appropriate medical facility to receive care and get you home after treatment.
BAGGAGE LOSS, DAMAGE, or THEFT
Reimburses the replacement of your lost, damaged, or stolen luggage and personal items while traveling.
BAGGAGE DELAY
Reimburses essential items purchased during your trip if your baggage is delayed for a minimum number of hours (varies by plan).
CHANGE FEE
Reimburses fees if you need to change your flight itinerary due to a covered reason.
