Objectives:
  1. Develop an asthma action plan and manage patients using recommendations based from the NHLBI guidelines.
  2. Determine whether a patient has food allergy, perform and interpret appropriate allergy tests, and provide a management plan for patients with food allergy.
  3. Diagnose a patient with drug allergy, develop a differential diagnosis and provide an appropriate management plan.
  4. Develop a differential diagnosis, perform appropriate testing and provide a management plan for patients who have acute and chronic hives.
  5. Give allergy shots safely in a private office and manage reactions that might occur.
  6. Diagnose and manage patients who have persistent rhinitis due both to allergies and to the common cold.
  7. Provide appropriate testing and counseling to patients with suspected environmentally-induced illness including toxic mold exposure.
  8. Recognize the severity of anaphylaxis and the causes.
  9. Develop a treatment plan for angioedema based on the pathophysiology; histamine or bradykinin.
  10. Manage atopic dermatitis, based upon better knowledge of a complex chronic skin disorder.
  11. Appreciate the signs and symptoms of acute and chronic sinusitis with an emphasis on diagnosis and treatment.
  12. Care for patients with sinus headaches with a better understanding of the associated anatomy and neurology.
  13. Diagnose a patient with vocal cord dysfunction by combining an appropriate history, pulmonary function tests, and/or rhinolaryngoscopy.
  14. Diagnose and manage the patient with immunodeficiency.
  15. Identify rashes caused by contact exposure and to interpret the results of allergy patch testing.
Conference Sessions generally take place on days at sea (as itinerary allows), giving you plenty of time to enjoy your meals, evenings and ports of call with your companion, family and friends.

Faculty

Jay Portnoy, MD

Dr. Jay Portnoy is the chief allergy, asthma and immunology at Children's Mercy Hospitals & Clinics in Kansas City, Missouri, and professor of pediatrics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Medicine. He received his medical degree at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine. He did his pediatric residency at the Children's Mercy Hospital and his allergy fellowship at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, after which he returned to Children's Mercy Hospital.

Dr. Portnoy has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals involving asthma disease management, environmental control and mold allergy. More recently he has been involved in evidence-based medicine, and is co-chair of the Joint Taskforce on Practice Parameters, which is focused on developing boundaries within which the field of allergy and immunology consistently provides the best quality of care for patients. Dr. Portnoy was co-director of the Kansas University Medical School allergy program from 1985 to 1997, founded the UMKC School of Medicine allergy program and directed it from 1997-2006.

Dr. Portnoy currently is president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, and he serves on numerous committees both of the College and of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. He lives in Kansas and works in Missouri.

Roger W. Fox, MD

After receiving his medical degree at St. Louis University School of Medicine, he completed his 3 years of Internal Medicine and 2 years in Allergy and Immunology at the University of South Florida in Tampa. He joined the faculty at USF in the Division of Allergy and Immunology. He was recognized for his 30 years of service to USF College of Medicine and to the Tampa VA Department of Medicine. He is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. He has been elected as The Best Doctors in America for the past decade. He serves as the Director of A/I Fellow Training, and he has trained 75 Allergy/Immunology Fellows. He has an extensive list of contributions in the literature, and presentations at local, national and international meetings. He has been on various boards including the Hillsborough County Medical Association and Florida Allergy Asthma and Immunology Society and many committees in the Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.

He currently is Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at USF College of Medicine. He has been in practice for over 30 years for Academic Allergy, Asthma and Immunology in Tampa. He is attending physician at USF Clinical Practice and at the Tampa VA Hospital. He is a consultant for Tampa General Hospital, Moffitt Hospital, Tampa VA Hospital and University Community Hospital.
