This uniquely specialized and educationally intense Columbia University Medical Center & NewYork Presbyterian Hospital program will immerse attendees in some of the most important topics in internal medicine. Designed specifically by Columbia Physicians, this inaugural conference takes place on board the EPIC Norwegian Cruise Ship.

The material will be presented in interactive lecture format, presented by the leading clinician educators from Columbia University Medical Center & NewYork Presbyterian Hospital. Faculty

Paul Lee, M.D., M.P.H. – Course Director, Division of General Medicine, Department of Medicine, Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine; Medical Director, Section of Hospital Medicine; Associate Director, Medical House Staff Training Program

Dr. Paul Lee obtained his Medical Degree at Mount Sinai Medical School in New York City. Subsequently, he trained at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center for internship and residency. After serving as a Chief Medical Resident, he joined the Section of Hospital Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Columbia University. Since 2002, he has served as an Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program, and he continues to chair the Residency Selection Committee.  Since 2003, he has been the Medical Director of the Hospitalist Group and in the following year began serving as the Unit Chief for the newly created Hospitalist Nursing Unit.  In 2004, he was a recipient of the Physician of the Year Award by the Division of Nursing. In 2007, he was named a three-year recipient of the Ewig Clinical Education Award for dedication and excellence in clinical teaching.

Angelo Biviano, M.D., Esther Aboodi Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine, Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine

Dr. Biviano is a cardiologist who specializes in clinical cardiac electrophysiology. His research interests include percutaneous catheter ablations of arrhythmias, particularly atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia. 

R. John Crew, M.D., Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine, Medical Director, Comprehensive Incompatible Kidney Transplant Program, Division of Nephrology, Department of Medcine

R. John Crew went to medical school at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, after spending four undergraduate years at Harvard University. He completed his internal medicine and nephrology training at Columbia University, New York. He then spent an additional year doing immunology and transplantation research. Currently, he works as a transplant nephrologist in the largest kidney transplant program on the East coast, where he also directs Columbia's Incompatible Kidney Transplant Program.

Marcus Pereira, M.D., M.P.H., Division of Infectious Diseases

Dr. Pereira earned a Master’s in Public Health degree from Florida International University before he attended the University of Florida College of Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency and Fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Columbia University Medical Center. As an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Infectious Diseases Division at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, he heads the Transplant Infectious Diseases Program. His current research includes multi-drug resistant infections in transplant patients.

Elizabth C. Verna, M.D., Division of Digestive & Liver Diseases

Dr. Elizabeth Verna earned her BA in Biology at the University of Virginia prior to attending the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons for medical school.  She completed her Internal Medicine residency at Columbia and then served as a Chief Resident before remaining at Columbia for Gastroenterology and Advanced/Transplant Hepatology fellowships.  While in fellowship, she also completed a Masters in Biostatistics at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.  Dr. Verna is now an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation and Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases at Columbia University.  She is the Associate Director of the Transplant Hepatology Fellowship and in addition to her clinical activities in liver transplantation, has an active research program with grant support for the study of hepatitis C in liver transplant recipients.
