Decreasing reimbursements and rising practice costs are increasing the need for efficient communication across multiple clinical venues. This program focuses on approaches to communication with colleagues, nurses, PAs, support staff, office managers, administrators and insurance companies. Various strategies can be used in office, clinical and hospital settings. The format will be stimulating and interactive- including break-out sessions to hone application of communication skills for personal and professional growth.

Faculty
Keith Sullivan, M.D., , James B Wyngaarden professor of Medicine at Duke University. Currently Principal Investigator for the National Scleroderma Transplant Consortium collaborating with private referring physicians, clinicians and researchers in 30 universities.

Keith Sullivan is the James B Wyngaarden Professor of Medicine at Duke University. He recently served as chief of the combined Division of Medical Oncology and Transplantation and is now the Principal Investigator for the National Scleroderma Transplant Consortium. Currently, his interdisciplinary clinical research involves leading a team of colleagues in 30 universities. His Medicine Residency and Fellowship were completed at the University of Washington and for the following twenty five years Dr. Dr. Sullivan served as a member of the Clinical Research Division and head of the Long Term Follow-up Program at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Professional memberships include Executive Committee of the American Society of Hematology, Board of Directors for the Accreditation of Hematopoietic Cell Therapy, Founding President of the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation, Electee of the Association for American Physicians, Electee of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and recognized by the Institute of Scientific Information as a Highly Cited Researcher, Clinical Medicine Category. Experiences with boards, internal and external stakeholders in health care delivery, grants, faculty recruitment and mentoring led to establishing yearly retreats for fellows starting academic careers. Each year the Southeast Fellows Research Skills Retreat hosts 80 fellows and faculty from 12 east coast universities to hone skills in grant writing, research, leadership, communication and career development. An understanding of the challenges shared by physicians in private practice and those practicing in academic settings has influenced his deep commitment to collaboration.

Kristine Sullivan Ed.D., Adjunct Assistant Professor, Duke University. Currently, faculty for the Southeast Fellows Research Skills Retreat. Executive coach and consultant for program development in leadership and communication. Professional speaker.

Dr. Sullivan earned a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Seattle University. Her approach to leadership is informed by research on emerging interdisciplinary leadership models. Her doctoral dissertation, Empowerment AND Control: A New Management Paradigm, included interviews with prominent CEOs selected for their effectiveness in working with a diverse workforce. Based on this study, she co-authored a business book: Wide Awake in Seattle, Success Stories of Outstanding Leaders Who Learned to Share Leadership. For the last ten years, Dr. Sullivan has served as director, founding faculty and consultant for inaugural physician leadership programs sponsored by medical societies in North Carolina, Texas, Tennessee and Georgia. Core components of the annual programs include professional development, team building, communication, collaboration, influence, work/ life integration and opportunities for individual mentoring. During this time Dr. Sullivan has also served as an adjunct assistant professor for Duke University. Teaching has included leadership courses for physicians, scientists, engineers and Fuqua's Week-end and Global Executive MBA programs. Currently, Dr. Sullivan is serving as faculty for the Southeast Fellows Research Skills Retreat. As an independent consultant and professional speaker, she coaches, advises for leadership and communication program development, and presents keynotes, workshops and retreats for professional organizations.
