PORTS OF CALL

Barcelona, Spain

For those fortunate enough to begin and end their cruise in Barcelona, we offer this crucial piece of advice: treat the city not as a simple bookend, but as an essential chapter of your journey. To arrive a day before your cruise or depart immediately after is to miss the very soul of Catalonia. We strongly encourage you to frame your voyage with at least two or three days here, allowing Barcelona’s vibrant, artistic, and delicious culture to fully unfold.

This is a city that rewards immersion. It’s a place of grand boulevards and hidden medieval alleys, of avant-garde art and centuries-old traditions. It’s where the Mediterranean spirit of leisure blends with a fierce Catalan pride, creating an energy that is utterly unique. Let us help you craft the perfect pre- or post-cruise stay.

### Day 1: The Ancient Heart – Gothic Quarter & El Born

Begin your exploration by losing yourself in the **Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter)**. This is the historical center of Barcelona, a captivating labyrinth of narrow, winding streets that open unexpectedly onto sun-drenched plazas. While walking, you’ll stumble upon the magnificent **Barcelona Cathedral** (not to be confused with Sagrada Família), a soaring example of Catalan Gothic architecture. Take a moment in the serene cloister, home to a flock of 13 geese. The real joy here is aimless wandering, discovering artisan shops, quiet courtyards, and the palpable weight of history.

Adjacent to the Gothic Quarter is the trendier, more bohemian district of **El Born**. It shares the medieval layout but has a distinctly more artistic vibe. Here you’ll find the superb **Museu Picasso**, which offers an unparalleled look into the formative years of the artist. Just a short walk away is the breathtaking **Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar**, a church so beloved by locals it’s often called the “Cathedral of the Sea.” El Born is also a culinary hotspot, perfect for an evening of *pintxos* (Basque-style tapas) and local wine.

### Day 2: The Genius of Gaudí & The Elegance of Eixample

Today is dedicated to the architectural visionary who defined Barcelona: Antoni Gaudí. Start at his magnum opus, the still-unfinished **La Sagrada Família**. Our most critical tip: **book your tickets online, weeks or even months in advance.** This is not a suggestion; it is a necessity. The exterior is a marvel of symbolic sculpture, but the interior is where the true magic lies. Stepping inside is like entering an ethereal forest, with columns branching out like trees and kaleidoscopic light filtering through the stained-glass windows. It is a profound experience you will never forget.

From there, take a stroll down the elegant **Passeig de Gràcia**, Barcelona’s answer to the Champs-Élysées. This grand avenue is home to two more of Gaudí’s masterpieces. **Casa Batlló**, with its skeletal balconies and dragon-scaled roof, feels like a fairytale come to life. A few blocks up, **Casa Milà (La Pedrera)** undulates like a stone quarry, topped by a surreal rooftop sculpture garden of warrior-like chimneys. Again, advance booking is essential.

For a perfect afternoon, head up to **Park Güell**. Originally conceived as a utopian housing development, it’s now a whimsical public park with panoramic views of the city and sea. The mosaic-covered serpentine bench and gingerbread-style gatehouses are pure Gaudí fantasy. It’s a bit of a journey, but utterly worth it.

### The Culinary Scene: Beyond Tapas

Barcelona is a food lover’s paradise. For a true sensory explosion, visit a market. The world-famous **Mercado de La Boqueria** (just off Las Ramblas) is an icon, but it can be overwhelmingly crowded. For a slightly more local experience, we recommend the **Mercat de Santa Caterina** near the cathedral, identifiable by its spectacular, wavy mosaic roof. It’s a fantastic place to see locals shopping for produce and to grab a superb lunch at one of its market bars.

When dining, look for Catalan specialties. Start with *pa amb tomàquet* (bread rubbed with tomato, garlic, and olive oil), the simple but perfect foundation of any meal. Indulge in plates of *jamón ibérico*, crispy *patatas bravas*, and fresh seafood from the nearby coast. For a memorable meal, explore the seaside neighborhood of **La Barceloneta** for its excellent paella and seafood restaurants.

### Practical Logistics for the Cruiser

Barcelona is wonderfully easy to navigate, making a pre- or post-cruise stay a seamless experience.

* **Arrival:** From El Prat Airport (BCN), the **Aerobus** is the most efficient way to reach the city center (Plaça de Catalunya). Taxis are readily available and offer door-to-door convenience.
* **Accommodation:** For first-time visitors, staying in **El Born**, the **Gothic Quarter**, or the elegant **Eixample** district provides a central and atmospheric base.
* **Getting Around:** The city is very walkable, but the **Metro** system is clean, efficient, and will save your feet. A multi-day Hola Barcelona Travel Card or simply using your contactless card at the turnstiles makes it incredibly easy.
* **To the Cruise Port:** The main cruise terminal, **Moll Adossat**, is not within easy walking distance of the city center. A **taxi** is the simplest and most direct option (around 15-20 minutes from the central areas). Alternatively, the blue **Portbus (T3)** shuttle runs from the Columbus Monument at the foot of Las Ramblas directly to the terminals.

Allowing yourself this extra time transforms Barcelona from a logistical checkpoint into a highlight of your entire vacation. It’s a city that deserves to be savored, and you deserve the time to do it right.

Palma De Mallorca, Spain

Palma de Mallorca is a pleasant surprise for many, offering a level of urban sophistication and history that far exceeds the typical Mediterranean island port. This is a genuinely rewarding stop, a compact and elegant city that beautifully balances grandeur with a relaxed seaside pace.

The city's soul is the magnificent Catedral-Basílica de Santa María, 'La Seu.' This Gothic masterpiece dominates the waterfront, but its true marvel lies within: a modernist interior intervention by Antoni Gaudí, whose wrought-iron canopy hangs like a crown jewel over the altar. Its sheer scale and the way light filters through its massive rose window are truly breathtaking.

From the cathedral, lose yourself in the labyrinthine lanes of the Casco Antiguo (Old Town). Here, sandstone buildings hide tranquil courtyards, and the former maritime exchange, La Llotja, stands as a testament to the city's prosperous trading past. It’s a perfect area for aimless wandering, discovering small boutiques and authentic cafes.

For a commanding view of the city and the sweeping bay, a short taxi ride to the Castell de Bellver is well worth the effort. It’s one of Europe’s few circular castles, offering a unique perspective both architecturally and geographically. While the island's most famous beaches require more time than a port day allows, the city itself provides ample reward. Duck into a bakery for a spiral-shaped *ensaimada*, the classic Mallorcan pastry, or find a shaded plaza for a glass of local wine. The city is easily walkable, though the main cruise terminal is a fair distance from the center, making a shuttle or taxi a practical first step.

At Sea - Cruising

La Spezia, Italy

La Spezia serves as a practical and efficient gateway to some of the most celebrated destinations in Italy. While the city itself is a pleasant naval and commercial port, its primary value for most visitors is its strategic location, offering direct access to the wonders of the Ligurian coast and the treasures of Tuscany.

The premier excursion is, without question, the Cinque Terre. This string of five ancient seaside villages, clinging to cliffs along the Italian Riviera, is a UNESCO World Heritage site for good reason. The most effective way to visit is by a short train ride from La Spezia Centrale station, which connects all five villages. You can hop on and off, perhaps hiking a portion of the scenic coastal trail (check for trail closures beforehand) or simply enjoying the unique character of each town, from the vibrant harbor of Vernazza to the iconic vistas of Manarola. A ferry from La Spezia’s port also offers a beautiful perspective from the sea, though it is slower and weather-dependent.

For those with an ambition for Renaissance art and architecture, both Pisa and Florence are viable, albeit long, day trips. A visit to Pisa is focused on its magnificent Piazza dei Miracoli (“Square of Miracles”), where the Leaning Tower, the Duomo, and the Baptistery form a stunning architectural ensemble. Florence, further afield, demands a full and fast-paced day. It offers an immersion into the heart of the Renaissance, with the chance to see Michelangelo’s David, Brunelleschi's Duomo, and the Ponte Vecchio. Given the travel time, a structured tour is often the most pragmatic way to experience these Tuscan cities from the port.

Should you prefer a more relaxed day, or if you’ve previously visited the main attractions, La Spezia itself offers an authentic slice of modern Italian life. Stroll the palm-lined waterfront promenade, explore the pedestrianized shopping streets of Via del Prione, and experience the bustling daily food market in Piazza Cavour. It’s an excellent opportunity to enjoy regional specialties like focaccia and fresh pesto without the crowds of the more famous nearby destinations.

Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy

Let’s begin with the essential truth of this port call: Rome is one of the world’s most magnificent destinations, but your ship docks in Civitavecchia, a working port about 60-90 minutes away. This distance is the single most important factor in planning your day. A visit to the Eternal City from a cruise ship is not a casual stroll; it’s a tactical operation, and a brilliant one if planned correctly.

With limited time, you must choose your focus. Trying to conquer all of Rome in eight hours is a recipe for exhaustion. Instead, choose one or two core experiences. For a deep dive into antiquity, dedicate your day to the epic trio of the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. Pre-booking tickets is not a suggestion; it is an absolute necessity to avoid spending half your day in a queue. Standing inside the Colosseum is a moment that truly transcends tourism.

Alternatively, you can immerse yourself in the grandeur of the Vatican. A visit to St. Peter's Basilica (note the modest dress code), the Vatican Museums, and Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel is a profound artistic pilgrimage. Again, advance, skip-the-line tickets are mandatory. The sheer scale of the art and history here can be overwhelming, so consider a guided tour to provide context and navigate the vast collections efficiently.

If you prefer a more atmospheric experience, focus on the iconic landmarks of the city center. A classic walk could include tossing a coin into the Trevi Fountain, gazing up through the Pantheon's oculus, and admiring Bernini’s fountains in the Piazza Navona. This route allows for more spontaneity—stopping for a perfect espresso, discovering a hidden courtyard, or indulging in a scoop of world-class gelato. A day in Rome is a whirlwind, but it offers a powerful, unforgettable glimpse into a city that has shaped the very foundations of Western civilization.

Naples, Italy

Naples is less a polished tourist destination and more a vibrant, chaotic, and profoundly authentic slice of Southern Italy. As a port of call, it’s a world-class launchpad to some of history’s most significant sites and Europe’s most breathtaking coastlines. Your challenge isn't finding something to do; it's accepting you can't possibly do it all in one day.

For most, the primary draw lies just outside the city: the astonishing ruins of Pompeii. Buried by Vesuvius in A.D. 79, this ancient city offers an unparalleled window into Roman life. We strongly recommend a guided tour here; the site is vast, and an expert can bring the silent stones of its villas, temples, and brothels to life. For a more intimate and often better-preserved alternative, consider nearby Herculaneum, which was entombed in mud rather than ash, preserving incredible details like wooden beams and mosaics.

If you prefer legendary beauty to ancient history, the Bay of Naples delivers. A hydrofoil can whisk you across the water to the glamorous Isle of Capri, famed for its dramatic Faraglioni rocks, chic boutiques, and the ethereal Blue Grotto (weather permitting). Alternatively, a drive along the coast brings you to Sorrento, a charming town perched on cliffs with stunning views and a more relaxed atmosphere, perfect for sipping limoncello and soaking in the scenery.

Should you choose to dive into Naples itself, be prepared for an intense and rewarding experience. The city’s historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage site, a labyrinth of narrow streets, hidden courtyards, and baroque churches. The National Archaeological Museum is an absolute must, housing the priceless mosaics, frescoes, and artifacts recovered from Pompeii and Herculaneum. And, of course, there is the pizza. This is its birthplace, and enjoying an authentic Neapolitan pizza is not just a meal, but a cultural imperative. Naples is gritty, loud, and utterly unforgettable—a port that rewards the curious traveler with an experience of raw, unfiltered Italy.

  • Cancelling your trip after unexpectedly becoming too sick to travel
  • Taking care of a sick or injured traveling companion
  • Having to end your trip early due to a family emergency
  • Dealing with a flight delay or cancellation
  • Needing to buy personal items if your luggage is lost or stolen

Specific plan benefits may vary. Please review your plan details for more information.

What Can Travel Insurance Help Protect?

Allianz Travel Insurance plans can protect you before and during your trip—keeping you, your loved ones, and your travel budget safer. Benefits vary by plan, and these are brief descriptions. Please read your plan documents for details.

TRIP CANCELLATION

Reimburses your prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason, such as you, a family member, or traveling companion experiencing a covered illness or injury. Examples include:

  • A doctor says you or a traveling companion is too sick to fly
  • Your parent or child requires hospitalization
  • You need to attend the birth of a family member’s child
  • You have a traffic accident (not breakdown) on the way to the airport
  • A storm shuts down your airport for 24 hours or more

TRIP INTERRUPTION

Reimburses your unused, non-refundable travel expenses and increased transportation costs during your trip if you have to return home early due to a covered reason, for instance when a family member has a qualifying medical emergency and needs your care. Examples include:

  • You have a covered illness or injury and a doctor says you must return home
  • A family member has a qualifying injury and needs your care
  • A covered emergency, like a fire or flood, makes your home uninhabitable

TRAVEL DELAY

If you have a covered delay while traveling, travel insurance can reimburse you for meals, accommodations, and transportation expenses when your trip is delayed for a minimum number of consecutive hours for a covered reason. Minimum number of hours varies by plan.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE

Reimburses your expenses related to covered medical and dental emergencies* that might occur on your trip. This benefit can be especially helpful if you have a covered emergency outside the United States, as most health insurance policies won’t cover you outside the country. Examples include:

  • You slip and break your ankle while sightseeing
  • You get food poisoning while sampling the local cuisine
  • You lose a filling and need immediate dental treatment*

*A sublimit and maximum apply for this benefit. Check your plan documents for details.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION

Arranges and pays for medically necessary transportation following a covered injury or illness to the nearest appropriate medical facility to receive care and get you home after treatment.

BAGGAGE LOSS, DAMAGE, or THEFT

Reimburses the replacement of your lost, damaged, or stolen luggage and personal items while traveling.

BAGGAGE DELAY

Reimburses essential items purchased during your trip if your baggage is delayed for a minimum number of hours (varies by plan).

CHANGE FEE

Reimburses fees if you need to change your flight itinerary due to a covered reason.
