Faculty
Duane C. Eichler, Ph.D. is presently a Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of Molecular Medicine at the USF Morsani College of Medicine. He retired on May 31, 2012 as Professor and Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Molecular Medicine after 35 years of service. Dr. Eichler also maintained an active joint appointment as Professor in the Department of Pediatrics working with the faculty in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes since 1988. He has been an educator of physicians at USF since June, 1977, and directed an active research program which sought to better understand some of the pathogenic processes which cause cardiovascular disease. This research was most currently supported by a (RO1) Grant from the National Institutes of Health, Heart, Lung & Blood Institute.

Dr. Eichler is a dedicated and gifted teacher and has been the recipient of numerous teaching awards, including the prestigious James Krivanek Award, awarded annually to an outstanding teacher at USF, and the Outstanding Preclinical Professor Award, awarded annually by students of the Morsani College of Medicine. He was the first recipient of the Outstanding Lifetime Educational Excellence Award for 2010 -2011. Dr. Eichler has mentored numerous high school students and teachers, undergraduate students, graduate students, and medical students.

As a Course Director, Dr. Eichler was responsible for the development and implementation of several interdisciplinary courses for medical students (Molecular Biology & Human Genetics; Human Molecular Genetics & Biochemistry; Molecular, Cellular & Genetic Basis of Medicine; Molecular Medicine) taught jointly by faculty from several departments. From 2003 to 2010 he served as Director of an interdisciplinary and integrated course for first-year Medical Students entitled Molecular Medicine. This course was highly rated by both students and participating faculty, and was attributed in large part to Dr. Eichler's exceptional commitment, leadership and attention to detail.

Dr. Eichler has established an exemplary record in the area of service. He was the driving force behind the development of an active interdisciplinary Health Science Center Obesity Group. He organized a highly successful national Conference on Obesity and served as its Director for seven years. The success of the Conference on Obesity also gained attention and support from the State of Florida, Department of Health, American Heart Association, and Tampa General Hospital. In addition, Dr. Eichler was actively involved in community outreach programs for the University and USF Health as a frequent featured speaker on Obesity, and in particular, Childhood Obesity for local community groups, local high schools and the USF Health Mini-Medical School (2001 and 2004). From 2011 to 2013, Dr. Eichler has been a volunteer liaison between USF Health and The Villages of Florida, providing support for The Villages/USF Health Alliance, and as well as promoting participation of The Villages Charter High School Science Fair winners in USF Health Research Day.

Ports of Call
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida - There is an abundance of things to see and do in the Ft. Lauderdale area: visit the newly redesigned Ft. Lauderdale Beach and cafes, stroll the historic Riverwalk, shop the luxurious stores on Las Olas Boulevard or adventure to the Everglades for an intriguing air boat excursion.
Grand Turk - Grand Turk is a picturesque island with a relaxed pace and a warm, friendly atmosphere. There are no fast food chains and no sprawling resorts. In addition to the amazing year around diving, with Oasis Divers you have seasonal attractions such as the North Atlantic humpback whales during the winter and manta rays in the summer, you're sure to be amazed.
Half Moon Cay, Bahamas - When was the last time you whiled away the day on a private Caribbean island? Here's your chance. The island is ours; the day is yours to sun, swim, and sail. Enjoy!
Philipsburg, St. Maarten - An island under two flags. Sample the Dutch treats of Philipsburg: chocolate, cheese, delftware. On the French side linger over bouillabaisse, shop for Parisian perfumes.
San Juan, Puerto Rico - In days of yore, the waters near Puerto Rico teemed with pirate ships commanded by the likes of Sir Francis Drake. Aye, they are long gone, but in their wake they have left an island of national treasures: La Casa Blanca, built in 1501 for the island's first governor, Ponce de Leon; the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan; the tropical rain forests of El Yunque. TravelSafe.comPlease visit TravelSafe.com for travel insurance information.

Cruise Line cancellation policies are strictly enforced. For that reason, we urge all of our travelers to carefully consider whether travel insurance is a good value for them.

Certainly, if you have reason to think that "something might come up" that might force you to cancel, travel insurance is worth the cost of the premium. Examples we've seen in the past include ill or frail family members and changes in employment causing relocation.

If travel insurance is the right choice for you, we recommend TravelSafe. To visit their site and explore your options click here or on the link above. The cruise lines also offer travel insurance and we'd be happy to help you go that route if you'd prefer.
