PORTS OF CALL

Southampton (London), England

While your cruise documents say “Southampton (London),” let’s be clear: Southampton is the convenient gateway, but London is the unmissable main event. Treating this port as merely a place to embark or disembark would be a profound missed opportunity. As your advocates, we strongly encourage you to frame your voyage with a two or three-day stay in one of the world’s most dynamic cities. Samuel Johnson’s famous quip, "When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life," remains as true today as it was in the 18th century. A few days here will show you just how much life this incredible city offers.

**Crafting Your London Prelude (or Finale)**

Think of your time in London not as a layover, but as a distinct, curated chapter of your vacation. The city’s seamless blend of ancient history, contemporary culture, and culinary excellence provides the perfect bookend to a European cruise.

**Day 1: Icons, Royalty, and the West End**

Begin your adventure where London’s story is written in stone: the Tower of London. This nearly 1,000-year-old fortress is a masterclass in history. Arrive early to beat the crowds, witness the breathtaking Crown Jewels, and listen to the captivating, often grim, tales from the Yeoman Warders. From there, a short walk takes you to the iconic Tower Bridge. Afterwards, bypass the traffic and see the city from its historic highway, the River Thames. A Thames Clipper (part of the public transport network) offers a scenic and efficient ride to Westminster, where you’ll be greeted by the grandeur of the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, and Westminster Abbey. In the evening, immerse yourself in the electric atmosphere of the West End. After a pre-theater dinner in vibrant Covent Garden, settle in for a world-class performance, whether it’s a long-running musical or a critically acclaimed new play.

**Day 2: Global Treasures and Culinary Exploration**

Dedicate your morning to one of the world's greatest repositories of human history, the British Museum. It’s vast, so be strategic: focus on unmissable artifacts like the Rosetta Stone, the Parthenon Marbles, and the Egyptian mummies. For lunch, head to the South Bank and dive into the glorious chaos of Borough Market. One of London's oldest food markets, it’s a sensory overload in the best possible way. Graze on artisanal cheeses, freshly shucked oysters, gourmet sausage rolls, and international street food. Properly fueled, you can spend the afternoon exploring the cultural riches of the South Bank, from the modern masterpieces at the Tate Modern to a glimpse of Elizabethan theatre at Shakespeare's Globe.

**Day 3: Neighborhood Charm and Refined Shopping**

London is a city of villages, each with its own distinct character. You might explore the pastel-hued townhouses and antique stalls of Notting Hill, or the stately elegance of Mayfair and St. James's. Of course, a visit to Buckingham Palace is a must, perhaps timing your visit for the Changing the Guard ceremony or, if traveling between July and September, booking a tour of the magnificent State Rooms. For an unparalleled shopping experience, look beyond the high street. The iconic mock-Tudor facade of Liberty London houses a beautifully curated collection of fashion and design, while the legendary food halls of Fortnum & Mason are a feast for the eyes and palate. For a more contemporary scene, the independent boutiques and flagship stores around Carnaby Street and Seven Dials offer a hipper, more localized feel.

**The Practicalities: Making it Effortless**

Connecting your London stay to your Southampton cruise is far simpler than you might imagine. The city’s transport network is superb.

* **Getting Around London:** The Underground, or "The Tube," is exceptionally efficient. Don’t bother with special passes; simply tap your contactless credit/debit card or mobile payment device on the readers to enter and exit the system. It’s seamless and calculates the best fare for you.
* **Airport to City:** From Heathrow, the Heathrow Express whisks you to Paddington Station in about 15 minutes. The newer Elizabeth Line is also an excellent, comfortable option. From Gatwick, the Gatwick Express arrives at Victoria Station in about 30 minutes.
* **London to Southampton Port:** This is the key connection. Direct and frequent trains run from London Waterloo station to Southampton Central, with a journey time of approximately 80-90 minutes. We recommend choosing a hotel near Waterloo for ultimate convenience. Upon arrival at Southampton Central, a short 5-10 minute taxi ride will take you directly to your cruise terminal.

For those who prefer a more direct, door-to-door experience, we work with an excellent private transfer service and can arrange everything for you. Let us help you design the perfect London stay—it will elevate your cruise from a great vacation to an unforgettable journey.

At Sea - Cruising

Vigo, Spain

Vigo presents travelers with a distinct and compelling choice. It is the primary gateway to Santiago de Compostela, one of the world's most significant pilgrimage destinations. For those undertaking the 75- to 90-minute journey inland, the reward is the magnificent UNESCO-listed cathedral, the final stop on the Camino de Santiago. The city's historic center is imbued with a palpable sense of spiritual history, and witnessing the emotion of pilgrims completing their journey is a profound experience.

However, to dismiss Vigo itself would be a mistake. Staying in port reveals an authentic, energetic Galician city with a strong maritime identity and a superb culinary scene. The cruise terminal's convenient location allows for an easy walk into the Casco Vello (Old Town), a revitalized district of stone-paved streets and lively plazas. The city's gastronomic heart is the Rúa da Pescadería, or “Oyster Street,” where you can watch vendors shuck incredibly fresh oysters, served simply with a wedge of lemon. Pairing them with a glass of crisp, local Albariño wine is an essential Galician moment. For panoramic views of the city, the sprawling estuary, and the distant Cíes Islands, a walk up to the hilltop park, Monte O Castro, is highly recommended. Vigo offers a genuine taste of modern Spanish life in a region celebrated for its seafood and scenery.

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon greets you not with a grand overture, but with an intimate melody. Your arrival places you directly at the foot of Alfama, the city’s historic soul, a labyrinth of steep, cobbled lanes where the past is not a museum piece but a living, breathing part of the neighborhood. With two days to explore, you have the luxury of immersing yourself in the city’s unique rhythm.

**Day One: Alfama’s Embrace and the Sound of Fado**

Spend your first afternoon getting wonderfully lost in Alfama. This is not a district for maps and checklists; it’s for wandering. Follow the narrow alleys as they twist past sun-drenched patios, colorful tiled facades, and laundry lines fluttering overhead. The iconic, rattling yellow Tram 28 makes its way through these streets, offering a picturesque (if often crowded) tour. For a breathtaking introduction, make your way to a viewpoint like the Miradouro das Portas do Sol, which offers a stunning panorama of terracotta roofs tumbling down to the Tagus River.

As evening descends, Lisbon’s true character emerges. The overnight stay provides a rare opportunity to experience Fado, Portugal’s profoundly melancholic and soulful music. Head back into the heart of Alfama or to the neighboring Bairro Alto to find an authentic *casa de fados*. In these small, intimate restaurants, dinner is accompanied by powerful performances that speak of love, loss, and *saudade*—a deep, untranslatable longing. It is a moving cultural experience that defines the city’s spirit. For a more lively evening, the Bairro Alto district also offers a vibrant collection of bars and restaurants.

**Day Two: Imperial Grandeur or Downtown Discovery**

Your second day allows for a deeper exploration. We recommend one of two distinct paths:

1. **A Journey to Belém:** Take a short tram or taxi ride west along the river to Belém, the district that launched Portugal’s Age of Discovery. Here, you’ll find a concentration of national treasures. Stand in awe of the magnificent Jerónimos Monastery, a masterpiece of Manueline architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Nearby, the Belém Tower stands as a stoic symbol of the nation’s maritime past. No visit is complete without tasting the original custard tart at Pastéis de Belém, where the legendary recipe has been a closely guarded secret since 1837.

2. **Castle Views and City Life:** For those preferring to stay central, begin your morning with a climb to São Jorge Castle. The fortress walls provide the definitive 360-degree view of Lisbon. Afterward, descend into the Baixa district, the city’s elegant downtown, completely rebuilt on a grid system after the devastating 1755 earthquake. Stroll through the grand Praça do Comércio, ride the ornate, 19th-century Santa Justa Lift for another unique city perspective, and explore the sophisticated Chiado neighborhood, known for its theaters, bookstores, and historic cafés like A Brasileira.

In either case, wear comfortable shoes. Lisbon is a city built on seven hills, and its greatest rewards are found on foot, absorbing the golden light and timeless atmosphere that make it one of Europe’s most captivating ports.

La Coruna, Spain

La Coruña serves as a superb introduction to Galicia, Spain’s distinct and verdant northwestern region. The city presents a compelling choice for your day: immerse yourself in its own considerable Atlantic charms or journey inland to the world-renowned pilgrimage city of Santiago de Compostela.

If you remain in La Coruña, the undisputed highlight is the Tower of Hercules. This UNESCO World Heritage site is the world's oldest functioning Roman lighthouse, and climbing its steps rewards you with commanding views of the rugged coastline. From there, a stroll along the expansive Paseo Marítimo seaside promenade leads to the city’s historic heart. The Old Town (Ciudad Vieja) is a delightful maze of stone lanes, quiet squares, and Romanesque churches. It eventually opens onto the grand Plaza de María Pita, the city’s main square, dominated by its stately city hall. Don’t miss the iconic 'galerías'—glass-enclosed balconies that line the harbor front, earning La Coruña the nickname “The Crystal City.” Galician cuisine is a highlight; seek out a local restaurant for exceptional seafood, particularly *pulpo a feira* (market-style octopus), paired with a crisp Albariño wine.

Alternatively, a full-day excursion to Santiago de Compostela is a truly worthwhile endeavor. As the final destination of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, the city has a palpable spiritual and historical weight. The magnificent Cathedral, which houses the tomb of St. James, is the breathtaking centerpiece of a city built from granite and faith. La Coruña offers a genuine taste of a different Spain—one defined by its Celtic roots, Atlantic soul, and profound history.

  • A storm shuts down your airport for 24 hours or more

TRIP INTERRUPTION

Reimburses your unused, non-refundable travel expenses and increased transportation costs during your trip if you have to return home early due to a covered reason, for instance when a family member has a qualifying medical emergency and needs your care. Examples include:

  • You have a covered illness or injury and a doctor says you must return home
  • A family member has a qualifying injury and needs your care
  • A covered emergency, like a fire or flood, makes your home uninhabitable

TRAVEL DELAY

If you have a covered delay while traveling, travel insurance can reimburse you for meals, accommodations, and transportation expenses when your trip is delayed for a minimum number of consecutive hours for a covered reason. Minimum number of hours varies by plan.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE

Reimburses your expenses related to covered medical and dental emergencies* that might occur on your trip. This benefit can be especially helpful if you have a covered emergency outside the United States, as most health insurance policies won’t cover you outside the country. Examples include:

  • You get food poisoning while sampling the local cuisine
  • You lose a filling and need immediate dental treatment*

*A sublimit and maximum apply for this benefit. Check your plan documents for details.

BAGGAGE LOSS, DAMAGE, or THEFT

Reimburses the replacement of your lost, damaged, or stolen luggage and personal items while traveling.
