PROGRAM PURPOSE

The purpose of this CME activity is to review and discuss common general medical conditions and to provide guidelines for their management and prevention.

Topics have been chosen to benefit the family physician, general internist and Advance Practice Professionals in an ambulatory care setting.

  1. The Blue Baby - Diagnosis & Management
    • Following the presentation participants should be able to exclude common and generally benign causes of cyanosis in the newborn, and to consider and confidently diagnose cyanotic heart disease allowing for timely intervention and better outcomes
  2. The Vomiting Baby
    • This session hopes to bring together the common and uncommon causes of vomiting in the young baby thereby allowing for the recognition of those more serious cases warranting admission, and/or medical or surgical intervention.
  3. The Crying Infant - Infant Distress Syndrome
    • While all babies cry, those that continuously do so present to the clinician for diagnosis and effective management
    • The session will highlight the not uncommon causes that may be simply dealt with. It will also describe the complexity of the problem and its management especially if simple interventions have been carried out but with little improvement.
  4. Communicating with you Patients - A Pediatric Perspective
    • This interactive session will allow participants to reflect on their own practice with the aim of achieving a therapeutic interview as described by Winnicott.
  5. Feeding Problems in Infancy & Childhood
    • The session brings together the multiple considerations which may lead to feeding problems in the young thereby allowing the participants to more readily achieve early resolution.
  6. Pediatric Cardiology - An Overview
    Part 1. Acquired Heart Disease
    Part 2. Congenital Heart Disease
    • Following this presentation, participants should have an overall understanding of paediatric cardiology, recognise gaps in their knowledge and be more confident in making appropriate referrals.
  7. The Recognition of the "Very" Sick Child
    • Upon completion of the session participants hopefully will be able to recognize the very sick child and to institute appropriate and immediate treatment to ensure the best outcomes.
  8. Identifying and Managing Low Health Literacy
    • Understand which patient groups are at greatest risk for low health literacy
    • Appreciate the role that low health literacy plays on health outcomes
    • Review a simple intervention to identify the low health literacy patient
  9. Preoperative Assessment of Cardiac Risk in Non-Cardiac Surgery
    • To appreciate causes of preoperative cardiac events

    • To understand the prevalence of hypertension in African Americans

    • Review the role of the primary care clinician in the co-management of rheumatoid arthritis
    • Describe the role of disease-modifying drugs (DMARDs) on the clinical course of rheumatoid arthritis
  12. Physician Wellness and Resilience: Old Problem; New Urgency
    • To define physician wellness and the impact of physician stress on physicians and their patients
    • To describe new interventions to help physicians cope with wellness issues.
  13. Heart Disease in Women
    • Appreciate sex-related differences in symptoms of ischemia between men and women
    • Review non-traditional risk factors for CAD impacting women that deserve special attention
    • Discuss strategies to raise awareness and close the gaps to optimize treatment of heart disease in men and women
  14. Best Practices in the Diagnosis and Management of Resistant Hypertension
    • Review the epidemiology and clinical presentation of resistant hypertension (HTN)
    • Discuss the diagnosis of resistant HTN and strategies to assess the undetected causes of secondary HTN
    • Use current guidelines and algorithms to develop treatment plans for patients with HTN with an emphasis on resistant HTN

Professor of Medicine
Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine

Dr. David S. Kountz is a Professor of Medicine for the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine and Co-Chief Academic Officer for Hackensack Meridian Health. He earned his AB at Princeton, MD at SUNY/Buffalo School of Medicine, and MBA at Georgian Court University in Lakewood, NJ. He completed training in Internal Medicine at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia. 

A board-certified internist, Dr. Kountz has had progressive responsibilities in academic medicine as Associate Professor of Medicine at Temple University School of Medicine and Professor of Medicine at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. 

Dr. Kountz's research interests include hypertension treatment and guidelines in underserved populations, health literacy, pipeline programs and leadership development. He has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, editorials and abstracts, and is a frequent speaker within and outside of his health network on a variety of topics in primary care.

Professor Samuel Menahem from Melbourne, Australia is a Consultant Paediatrician with extensive experience in General Paediatrics and Neonatology. In addition he has researched and published widely on the interface of Child Psychiatry and Paediatrics and has trained as a Child Psychotherapist. He has a subspecialty of Paediatric Cardiology extending from the foetus to the adult with congenital heart disease.

He has held Consultant appointments at the Royal Children's Hospital both as a Physician and Cardiologist, and at Monash Medical Centre as a Consultant Paediatrician and Paediatric Cardiologist. He has previously headed the General Paediatric Unit and the Paediatric Cardiology Unit and was Foundation Co-Director of the Foetal Cardiac Unit at the latter institution. He continues to hold consultant appointments as a Paediatrician and Cardiologist.

Professor Menahem has an illustrious academic career. He graduated as top of his year from the University of Melbourne and subsequently successfully completed 4 research degrees. He gained his specialist qualification to the Royal Australasian College of Physicians after completing his residency. His Membership was subsequently elevated to a Fellowship of that College. He also is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand.

He continues to teach and mentor students and graduates. He has also been a Visiting Professor and/or Examiner to institutions overseas and has presented and lectured at National and International Meetings. He continues to be active especially in clinical research and has an extensive publication list.

Professor Menahem now spends most of his time in private consultant practice and continues to conduct teaching clinics in rural Victoria. Many of his patients have stayed with him since infancy into adult life including a number of women with congenital heart disease who he has successfully cared for during their pregnancies. His utilizes a holistic approach in all his consultations.

The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) has a reciprocal credit reporting agreement with the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). Members of the CFPC may claim up to 50 credits per five-year cycle from Physician's Recognition Award (PRA) Category 1 credits. Any additional credits are eligible as non-certified credits.
