PORTS OF CALL

Vancouver, British Columbia

Vancouver is not merely a place to start or end a cruise; it is a destination that merits its own chapter in your travel story. To treat it as a simple transit point is to miss one of North America’s most dynamic and scenically blessed cities. The seamless integration of a vibrant, multicultural metropolis with staggering natural beauty makes a pre- or post-cruise stay here less of an option and more of an essential component of the journey.

The city’s cruise terminal, Canada Place, sits conveniently in the heart of downtown, meaning your exploration can begin the moment you step ashore or check out of your hotel. Vancouver’s core is remarkably walkable, a compact grid of distinct neighborhoods nestled between the Burrard Inlet and False Creek, all under the watchful gaze of the Coast Mountains. This is a city that invites you to slow down and absorb its unique character.

**Exploring the City's Soul**

Your first priority should be Stanley Park, a 1,000-acre temperate rainforest that serves as the city’s green heart. This is no manicured city park; it’s a vast expanse of old-growth forest, rugged coastline, and tranquil lakes. The best way to experience it is by walking or cycling the Seawall, a paved 5.5-mile path that traces its perimeter, offering uninterrupted views of the city skyline, the North Shore mountains, and the ocean. Don’t miss the collection of First Nations totem poles at Brockton Point, a powerful and authentic introduction to the region’s indigenous heritage.

For a completely different but equally essential Vancouver experience, take a small Aquabus ferry across False Creek to Granville Island. Once an industrial wasteland, it has been transformed into a thriving hub for food, art, and culture. The main draw is the Public Market, a sensory overload of local produce, artisanal cheeses, fresh seafood, and gourmet food stalls. It’s a place to graze, sample, and assemble an impromptu picnic. Beyond the market, the island is home to artisan workshops where you can watch glassblowers, jewelers, and potters at their craft.

History and modern style converge in Gastown, the city’s oldest neighborhood. Its cobblestone streets and Victorian architecture now house independent boutiques, First Nations art galleries, and some of Vancouver’s most innovative restaurants and cocktail bars. It’s a neighborhood best explored on foot, allowing you to discover hidden courtyards and appreciate the intricate details of the historic buildings.

**A Culinary Landscape**

Vancouver’s dining scene is a direct reflection of its Pacific Rim geography and multicultural population. The quality and availability of fresh, local seafood is exceptional—from wild sockeye salmon and briny oysters to sweet Dungeness crab. Beyond the local catch, the city is celebrated for having some of the best and most diverse Asian cuisine outside of Asia. You can find world-class sushi, authentic ramen, and, for those willing to take a short SkyTrain ride to the suburb of Richmond, an unparalleled dim sum experience. The city also champions a strong farm-to-table ethos and a flourishing craft beer scene, with dozens of microbreweries scattered throughout the Mount Pleasant and East Vancouver neighborhoods.

**An Unhurried Two-Day Itinerary**

To truly appreciate what Vancouver offers, we recommend a minimum two-day stay. This allows for a relaxed pace that matches the city’s laid-back vibe.

* **Day 1: Urban & Historic Core**
Arrive at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and take the efficient Canada Line SkyTrain directly downtown. After checking into your hotel, spend the afternoon wandering through the historic streets of Gastown. Absorb the atmosphere, browse the unique shops, and watch the famous Steam Clock chime. For dinner, consider the neighborhood’s sophisticated dining options or head to nearby Yaletown, a former warehouse district known for its chic restaurants and lively patios.

* **Day 2: Nature, Art & Markets**
Start your morning like a local with a walk or bike ride along the Stanley Park Seawall. After building an appetite, hop on an Aquabus to Granville Island. Spend a few hours exploring the Public Market, grabbing lunch from one of the many food vendors. In the afternoon, you have choices. For a deep cultural dive, make the trip to the University of British Columbia to visit the stunning Museum of Anthropology, renowned for its collection of Northwest Coast First Nations art. Alternatively, for breathtaking views, take the SeaBus to North Vancouver and ascend Grouse Mountain via the Skyride gondola for a commanding panorama of the city and sea.

This is a city that rewards the curious. By extending your stay, you transform a logistical necessity into a memorable experience, allowing the spirit of the Pacific Northwest to set the tone for, or provide a perfect conclusion to, your Alaskan adventure.

Alaska Inside Passage

The Inside Passage isn't a port of call; for many, it is the entire point of an Alaskan cruise. This is not a day for shore excursions but a full immersion into one of the planet's most magnificent natural corridors. As your ship navigates these protected waters, you're traveling through a world carved by glaciers, where thousand-foot waterfalls cascade down sheer granite cliffs and the vast Tongass National Forest blankets every island.

The primary activity here is observation, and it is absolutely captivating. Find a spot on deck or on your balcony—with good binoculars in hand—and prepare to be humbled. The silence of the fjords is often broken only by the cry of a bald eagle or the thunderous crack of a tidewater glacier calving into the sea. This is where you'll witness the famous 'glacial blue,' an ethereal color that glows from within massive ice fields like those in Glacier Bay or Tracy Arm Fjord.

Keep a constant watch on the water. The passage is a rich feeding ground for humpback whales, and seeing one breach is an unforgettable, heart-stopping moment. Pods of orcas are also a common sight, as are sea lions barking from rocky haul-outs. Look toward the shore, and you might even spot a brown bear foraging along the water's edge at low tide.

Our best advice is simple: dress in warm layers, get outside, and listen to the onboard naturalist's commentary, which adds invaluable context to the spectacle. This is a profound, meditative experience—a chance to disconnect and witness the raw, untamed power of nature in a way that few places on Earth can offer.

Icy Strait Point, Alaska

Icy Strait Point offers a distinctly Alaskan experience, different from any other port. It is not a historic town but a private destination owned and operated by the Huna Totem Corporation, ensuring that your visit directly supports the local Tlingit community. The port is centered around a meticulously restored 1912 salmon cannery, which now serves as a vibrant hub with museums, local artisan shops, and restaurants. The entire experience is thoughtfully designed to blend with the stunning natural landscape of Chichagof Island.

The primary draw here is the incredible access to wildlife. The nutrient-rich waters of Port Frederick are a summer feeding ground for humpback whales, making whale-watching tours exceptionally rewarding. For those hoping to see terrestrial giants, guided excursions search for the island's dense population of coastal brown bears in their natural habitat.

For a dose of adrenaline, the ZipRider is one of the longest in the world, offering a breathtaking flight over the rainforest canopy with spectacular views of the port. Beyond the thrills, the port provides genuine cultural immersion. You can witness traditional Tlingit storytelling and dance performances, observe master carvers at work on totem poles, and learn about the deep connection between the people and this land. The port is easily navigable, with two dock areas connected by scenic gondolas. While the nearby village of Hoonah is accessible, most visitors find the port's self-contained offerings provide a full and satisfying day.

Hubbard Glacier

Hubbard Glacier is not a port of call in the traditional sense; it is a destination for pure observation, a slow-motion encounter with one of nature’s most powerful forces. There are no towns, no tours, and no tenders to shore. The entire experience unfolds from the deck of your ship as it navigates the ice-strewn waters of Disenchantment Bay.

The glacier itself is a spectacle of scale. At its terminus, the river of ice is over six miles wide, with a face that towers up to 400 feet above the waterline. Its most striking feature is its color—a deep, incandescent blue that seems to glow from within, a result of ancient, densely compacted ice absorbing every other color of the spectrum. The experience is auditory as much as it is visual. Listen for the sharp crack and deep groan of the ice, a sound that precedes the dramatic spectacle of calving. When a skyscraper-sized block of ice shears off and crashes into the sea, the sound, often called “white thunder,” echoes across the bay. This is a living, moving landscape; unlike most Alaskan glaciers, Hubbard is advancing, slowly pushing its way into the bay. Find a good vantage point, perhaps with a warm drink and binoculars, and simply watch. It is a profound, humbling display of geological time in action.

Juneau, Alaska

Juneau is a quintessential Alaskan port, a capital city uniquely isolated by wilderness and accessible only by air or sea. This isolation is its charm, creating a place where dramatic nature is always the main event. The undisputed star is the Mendenhall Glacier, a magnificent river of ice just a short drive from the docks. The visitor center provides spectacular views, but for a truly memorable experience, we recommend a helicopter tour that lands you directly on the glacier itself—an investment, but one that pays dividends in awe.

Beyond the glacier, Juneau is one of Alaska’s premier whale-watching destinations. The nutrient-rich waters of the Inside Passage are a summer feeding ground for humpback whales, and sightings are exceptionally common. For a different perspective, the Mount Roberts Tramway, which departs right from the cruise ship dock, whisks you 1,800 feet up for panoramic views of the Gastineau Channel and the surrounding Tongass National Forest.

The downtown area is compact, historic, and easily explored on foot. While it can be bustling with fellow cruisers, it’s worth a stroll down South Franklin Street to see the preserved architecture. For a dose of culture, the Alaska State Museum offers a superb collection of Native Alaskan and pioneer history. While the famous Red Dog Saloon is a lively and historic stop, for a more authentic taste of Juneau, seek out a local salmon bake. Juneau delivers exactly what you hope for in Alaska: breathtaking scenery and wildlife encounters that feel both grand and accessible.

Ketchikan, Alaska

Ketchikan is often your first taste of Alaska, and it’s a potent one. As the self-proclaimed "Salmon Capital of the World," this bustling town is built on fishing, timber, and the rich cultural heritage of the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples. Its authenticity is its greatest asset.

From the cruise dock, you're steps away from the town's most famous sight: Creek Street. This historic boardwalk, once the city's notorious red-light district, is now a charming collection of colorful stilted houses, galleries, and shops perched over the rushing creek. It’s an essential photo-op and a delightful place for a stroll, easily explored on your own.

To truly appreciate the region's soul, seek out the magnificent totem poles. The Totem Heritage Center, a manageable walk or short taxi ride from the port, houses a stunning collection of original 19th-century poles rescued from abandoned villages. It’s a quiet, powerful museum that offers deep insight into Native Alaskan artistry and tradition. For a more expansive outdoor setting, Totem Bight State Historical Park is another excellent choice, though it requires a short tour or taxi ride.

While the town is engaging, Ketchikan’s grandeur lies in the surrounding wilderness. For a truly unforgettable day, a floatplane or boat tour into the Misty Fjords National Monument is an unparalleled experience. These glacier-carved cliffs and serene waters are the Alaska you've dreamed of. For a more accessible nature fix, you can often spot salmon fighting their way upstream at the Ketchikan Creek fish ladder right in town during the summer season. Ketchikan is compact and can feel busy, but by focusing on either its rich cultural core or the spectacular nature at its doorstep, you'll find it a deeply rewarding port of call.

Why Protect your Trip?

Whether you’re planning your next trip or you recently booked one, travel insurance can help smooth over many unexpected travel glitches—while putting your mind at ease, knowing you’re off the hook for covered expenses that could arise from them.

Allianz Travel Insurance plans can provide you benefits and professional support when a covered situation comes up before or during your trip. The following examples may qualify for benefits:

  • Cancelling your trip after unexpectedly becoming too sick to travel
  • Taking care of a sick or injured traveling companion
  • Having to end your trip early due to a family emergency
  • Dealing with a flight delay or cancellation
  • Needing to buy personal items if your luggage is lost or stolen
  • Missing your cruise departure after a covered flight delay

You also can contact our travel protection partner Allianz Global Assistance’s 24/7, award-winning customer service for on-the-go assistance with issues like a medical emergency, replacing your lost passport, or making reservations around the world. To be eligible for a time-sensitive waiver of pre-existing medical condition exclusions, purchase your travel insurance plan within 14 days of initial trip deposit (other purchase requirements and conditions apply). Specific plan benefits may vary. Please review your plan details for more information.

What Can Travel Insurance Help Protect?

Allianz Travel Insurance plans can protect you before and during your trip—keeping you, your loved ones, and your travel budget safer. Benefits vary by plan, and these are brief descriptions. Please read your plan documents for details.

TRIP CANCELLATION

Reimburses your prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to a covered reason, such as you, a family member, or traveling companion experiencing a covered illness or injury. Examples include:

  • A doctor says you or a traveling companion is too sick to fly
  • Your parent or child requires hospitalization
  • You need to attend the birth of a family member’s child
  • You have a traffic accident (not breakdown) on the way to the airport
  • A storm shuts down your airport for 24 hours or more

TRIP INTERRUPTION

Reimburses your unused, non-refundable travel expenses and increased transportation costs during your trip if you have to return home early due to a covered reason, for instance when a family member has a qualifying medical emergency and needs your care. Examples include:

  • You have a covered illness or injury and a doctor says you must return home
  • A family member has a qualifying injury and needs your care
  • A covered emergency, like a fire or flood, makes your home uninhabitable

TRAVEL DELAY

If you have a covered delay while traveling, travel insurance can reimburse you for meals, accommodations, and transportation expenses when your trip is delayed for a minimum number of consecutive hours for a covered reason. Minimum number of hours varies by plan.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE

Reimburses your expenses related to covered medical and dental emergencies* that might occur on your trip. This benefit can be especially helpful if you have a covered emergency outside the United States, as most health insurance policies won’t cover you outside the country. Examples include:

  • You slip and break your ankle while sightseeing
  • You get food poisoning while sampling the local cuisine
  • You lose a filling and need immediate dental treatment*

*A sublimit and maximum apply for this benefit. Check your plan documents for details.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION

Arranges and pays for medically necessary transportation following a covered injury or illness to the nearest appropriate medical facility to receive care and get you home after treatment.

BAGGAGE LOSS, DAMAGE, or THEFT

Reimburses the replacement of your lost, damaged, or stolen luggage and personal items while traveling.

BAGGAGE DELAY

Reimburses essential items purchased during your trip if your baggage is delayed for a minimum number of hours (varies by plan).

CHANGE FEE

Reimburses fees if you need to change your flight itinerary due to a covered reason.

24-HOUR ASSISTANCE

Provides around-the-clock support during your trip. Allianz Global Assistance’s staff of multilingual problem solvers can help you with medical, legal, and travel-related emergencies whenever they happen. Medical assistance may include, but is not limited to:

  • Medical triage with referrals to local prescreened medical providers
