PORTS OF CALL

Budapest, Hungary

Arriving in Budapest on the day of your cruise departure is a missed opportunity. This is not merely a starting point; it is a world-class destination in its own right, a city of grand boulevards, healing thermal waters, and a complex, resilient history. To begin your European journey feeling relaxed, acclimated, and culturally enriched, plan to arrive at least one or two full days before your embarkation.

Budapest, the “Pearl of the Danube,” is really two distinct cities united by the iconic Chain Bridge. On the west bank lies hilly, historic Buda, crowned by its castle. On the east is Pest, the flat, sprawling commercial and administrative heart. Giving yourself time to explore both is essential to understanding the city’s soul.

**Getting Your Bearings**

From Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD), you have several straightforward options. The most direct is a pre-booked transfer or an official Főtaxi from the kiosk outside the terminal. For a more budget-conscious approach, the 100E express bus provides a direct link to Deák Ferenc Square in the city center, a major transit hub. The miniBUD shuttle is a shared-ride service that offers a good compromise between cost and convenience.

**A Suggested Pre-Cruise Itinerary**

**Day 1: The Imperial Grandeur of Pest**

After settling in, dedicate your first day to the vibrant energy of Pest. Begin at the magnificent Hungarian Parliament Building, a breathtaking example of Gothic Revival architecture on the riverbank. It is strongly advised to book tour tickets online well in advance to avoid disappointment. From there, a short, poignant walk south along the river leads to the “Shoes on the Danube Bank,” a moving memorial to Holocaust victims.

Stroll inland to St. Stephen's Basilica, where you can climb the dome for panoramic city views. From the basilica, make your way to Andrássy Avenue, Budapest’s answer to the Champs-Élysées, lined with neo-renaissance mansions, luxury boutiques, and the State Opera House. This grand boulevard leads directly to Heroes' Square, a monumental plaza featuring statues of the Magyar chieftains. The adjacent City Park is home to the romantic Vajdahunyad Castle and the city’s most famous thermal bath, Szechenyi.

For dinner, immerse yourself in the city's dynamic food scene. While a hearty bowl of goulash is a must, the historic Jewish Quarter offers a labyrinth of atmospheric streets, excellent restaurants, and the city’s famous “ruin bars.” These eclectic pubs, built in the ruins of abandoned buildings, offer a unique and unpretentious atmosphere for a pre-dinner drink. Szimpla Kert is the most famous, but exploring to find your own favorite is part of the fun.

**Day 2: The Royal History of Buda**

Today, explore the calmer, more historic Buda side. Walk across the iconic Széchenyi Chain Bridge, guarded by its stone lions, and take the historic funicular (or a brisk walk) up to Castle Hill. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a district of cobblestone streets, medieval houses, and sweeping vistas.

Spend the morning exploring the Buda Castle complex, which houses the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum. Afterward, wander toward the fairytale-like spires of Fisherman’s Bastion. Its seven towers represent the seven Magyar tribes, and its terraces offer what are arguably the best views of the Parliament and the Pest skyline. Right beside it is the stunning Matthias Church, with its colorful Zsolnay tiled roof and rich history of royal coronations.

In the afternoon, indulge in a quintessential Budapest experience: a visit to a thermal bath. While Szechenyi in Pest is vast and social, the Gellért Baths on the Buda side offer a more serene experience in a spectacular Art Nouveau setting. Soaking in the mineral-rich, naturally heated waters is the perfect way to overcome any lingering jet lag and relax completely before your cruise begins.

Before you depart, consider a visit to the Great Market Hall back in Pest. This cavernous, three-story market is a feast for the senses, with produce and paprika on the ground floor and food stalls and souvenirs upstairs. It’s an ideal place to sample local snacks like lángos (fried dough with toppings) and find authentic crafts.

By arriving early, you transform a travel day into a memorable part of your vacation. You’ll board your ship not in a rush, but with a genuine appreciation for the magnificent city that marks the start of your Danube journey.

Day 2: Budapest

Budapest is not merely a stop; it is a grand, complex capital that rightfully earns its title as the ‘Pearl of the Danube.’ This is a city of dual personalities, bisected by the river into historic, hilly Buda and the vibrant, flat expanse of Pest. Your day here is a journey through centuries of art, conflict, and resilience.

Begin your exploration on the Buda side, ascending Castle Hill to a district that feels lifted from a storybook. The neo-Gothic spires of Fisherman’s Bastion offer what are arguably the most stunning panoramic views of the Danube and the magnificent Parliament Building across the water. Steps away, the kaleidoscopic tiled roof of Matthias Church marks the historic coronation site of Hungarian kings. The entire district, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a pleasure to explore on foot, with cobblestone streets leading to the immense Buda Castle complex, now home to the Hungarian National Gallery and Budapest History Museum.

Crossing the iconic Chain Bridge into Pest, the atmosphere shifts. This is the city’s commercial and administrative heart, anchored by the colossal Hungarian Parliament, an architectural masterpiece you can admire from the outside or tour within (book tickets well in advance). Stroll down the elegant Andrássy Avenue, modeled after the Champs-Élysées, towards the expansive Heroes' Square. For a moment of profound reflection, visit the ‘Shoes on the Danube Bank’ memorial, a simple yet powerful tribute to the victims of WWII atrocities.

Beyond the landmarks, Budapest’s soul is found in its unique culture. For a truly quintessential experience, consider visiting one of the city’s famed thermal baths, like the sprawling Szechenyi Baths in City Park. Alternatively, dive into the culinary scene at the Great Market Hall, a cathedral of local produce, paprika, and street food like lángos. Budapest is a world-class destination that rewards every moment spent exploring its grandeur.

Day 3: Bratislava, Slovakia

Often nestled between the grand capitals of Vienna and Budapest on a Danube itinerary, Bratislava is a delightful and refreshingly compact surprise. As your trusted advisors, we encourage you to see it not as a lesser stop, but as a perfectly scaled city for a day’s exploration.

The heart of your visit is the pedestrian-only Old Town (Staré Mesto), a beautifully restored warren of cobblestone lanes, pastel 18th-century buildings, and lively cafés. It’s easily walkable from where the ships dock. Seek out the quirky bronze statues scattered throughout, like the famous Čumil (“Man at Work”), and find a seat in the Main Square (Hlavné námestie) to simply soak in the atmosphere.

For the best views, make the rewarding climb up to Bratislava Castle. The gleaming white fortress looms over the city, offering panoramic vistas of the Danube, the Old Town’s red roofs, and the striking UFO Bridge. Don’t miss St. Martin’s Cathedral, the historic coronation church for Hungarian kings. Bratislava offers a genuine, unpretentious glimpse into Slovakian life, best enjoyed at a relaxed pace with a glass of local wine or a hearty plate of *bryndzové halušky* (potato dumplings with sheep cheese).

Day 4: Vienna, Austria

Vienna is not merely a stop; it is the grand, symphonic heart of Central Europe. As the former capital of the vast Habsburg Empire, the city’s imperial past is not confined to museums—it is etched into the very fabric of its streets. Your day here is a chance to step directly into that history.

Most river cruises dock with easy access to the city center, where the magnificent Ringstrasse boulevard encircles the historic First District. A walk or tram ride along this loop is an architectural masterclass, showcasing the Vienna State Opera, the imposing Hofburg Palace (a city within a city that was the seat of emperors for centuries), and the twin fine arts and natural history museums. For art lovers, the Kunsthistorisches Museum is a non-negotiable stop, housing masterpieces by Bruegel, Rembrandt, and Vermeer.

At the core of the city stands the soaring Gothic spire of St. Stephen's Cathedral, a landmark you can use to orient yourself as you explore the surrounding pedestrian lanes. While the grand palaces like Schönbrunn (the Habsburgs' spectacular summer residence) and the Belvedere (home to Klimt's 'The Kiss') are essential Viennese experiences, a single day requires a focused plan. We suggest choosing one major palace or museum to explore in depth.

However, the true essence of Vienna is often found in its quieter moments. The city’s coffeehouse culture is a UNESCO-recognized tradition. Duck into a classic café like Café Central or Demel to experience this unique institution—a place for conversation, reading the paper, and indulging in a slice of Sachertorte or Apfelstrudel. It’s an authentic, accessible way to feel the city’s intellectual pulse. Vienna offers a profound cultural immersion, rewarding those who choose to dive deep into one or two of its world-class offerings rather than skimming the surface of them all.

Day 5: Weissenkirchen - Wachau Valley - Melk

Today is a highlight of any Danube journey, as you enter the heart of the Wachau Valley, a landscape so culturally and historically significant it’s protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is Austria at its most romantic: a fairytale stretch of river flanked by steep, terraced vineyards, apricot orchards, and storybook villages crowned with castle ruins.

The undisputed star of the region is Melk Abbey. Perched dramatically on a rocky bluff overlooking the Danube, this Benedictine monastery is a world-class masterpiece of Baroque architecture. Don't mistake this for just another old church; its lavish Marble Hall, staggering library filled with priceless manuscripts, and gilded interiors are genuinely breathtaking. The views from its terrace alone are worth the visit.

The valley is also dotted with charming towns. You'll likely explore Dürnstein, famous for the hilltop castle ruins where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned. Its cobblestone streets are perfect for a wander, perhaps stopping to sample the region's two great claims to fame: crisp Grüner Veltliner wine and the renowned Wachau apricot ('Marille'), which you'll find in everything from jams to liqueurs.

For a more active perspective, the well-maintained riverside bike path offers a fantastic way to experience the scenery up close. Whether you're exploring Melk's grandeur, cycling past vineyards, or simply sipping wine in a Dürnstein tavern, the Wachau Valley delivers an authentic and deeply memorable Austrian experience.

Day 6: Linz, Austria

Linz presents a fascinating choice, and it’s one of the most significant decisions you’ll make on your Danube journey. As your advocates, we want to be clear: Linz serves two distinct purposes. It is both a worthy destination in its own right and, more famously, the gateway to two of Central Europe’s most iconic sites.

Many travelers use their day here for a full-day excursion. The first option is Salzburg, the storybook city of Mozart and “The Sound of Music.” Its UNESCO-listed Old Town, Hohensalzburg Fortress, and magnificent cathedral are truly world-class. The second is the Czech town of Český Krumlov, a perfectly preserved medieval jewel box, also a UNESCO World Heritage site, that feels like stepping back 500 years. Both are exceptional, full-day commitments that are absolutely worth the travel time if they align with your interests.

However, to dismiss Linz itself would be a mistake. The city has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving from an industrial center into a hub of modern culture. The riverside “Culture Mile” is a testament to this, anchored by two outstanding institutions. The Ars Electronica Center, or “Museum of the Future,” offers interactive exhibits on technology and society that are genuinely thought-provoking. Across the river, the Lentos Kunstmuseum showcases modern art in a striking glass building. Beyond the modern, the vast Hauptplatz (Main Square) and the charming Old Town offer a classic Austrian experience, perfect for a leisurely stroll and a slice of the city’s namesake Linzer Torte.

Day 7: Passau, Germany

Passau is a visual delight, a city uniquely positioned at the dramatic confluence of three rivers—the Danube, Inn, and Ilz. Nicknamed the 'Dreiflüssestadt' (City of Three Rivers), its compact, walkable Old Town is a joy to explore, with colorful facades and a distinctly Italianate feel gifted by the architects who rebuilt it after a 17th-century fire.

The city’s undisputed heart is the magnificent St. Stephen's Cathedral, a Baroque masterpiece. Its true treasure is inside: one of the world's largest cathedral organs, a staggering instrument with nearly 18,000 pipes. If your visit aligns, the brief midday organ concert offers a powerful and unforgettable acoustic experience that resonates through the entire structure.

For a commanding perspective of the city and its unique geography, make your way up to the Veste Oberhaus. This sprawling fortress has guarded Passau for centuries and offers the definitive view of the 'Dreiflüsseeck' (three rivers corner), where you can see the distinct colors of the different river waters merging. The walk up is steep but scenic; a convenient shuttle bus is also available from the city hall square for those who prefer to save their energy.

Beyond these highlights, the pleasure of Passau lies in simply wandering its cobblestone lanes, discovering hidden courtyards, or enjoying a coffee at a riverside café. It’s a port that offers significant history and stunning scenery, all within a delightfully manageable scale for a day's exploration.

Vilshofen, Germany

As your Danube cruise concludes in Vilshofen, the instinct may be to head straight for the airport. Consider, however, that this charming Lower Bavarian town is not merely an endpoint, but a serene and strategic starting point for a deeper exploration of the region. Instead of a rushed departure, a one- to three-day extension allows you to decompress and experience Bavaria at a more authentic pace.

### A Post-Cruise Itinerary: From Vilshofen to Bavaria

**Day 1: The Quiet Charm of Vilshofen**

After disembarking, settle into a local hotel or a traditional *Gasthof*. The pace of life here is a welcome contrast to a structured cruise schedule. Spend the afternoon exploring Vilshofen on foot. The heart of the town is its narrow, historical Stadtplatz (town square), lined with pastel-colored buildings. Walk the Danube promenade, watching the river traffic you so recently were a part of, but now from a new perspective.

A short, scenic walk or taxi ride up the hill leads to the Benedictine Abbey of Schweiklberg. While the architecture is impressive, its most unique feature is the Africa Museum, housing a fascinating collection of artifacts gathered by its missionaries. For dinner, embrace the local culture at a traditional Bavarian restaurant. This is the place for hearty, well-prepared classics like schnitzel or *schweinebraten* (roast pork) with dumplings, accompanied by a crisp beer from the local Wolferstetter brewery. The experience is not about Michelin stars, but about genuine, satisfying local fare in a relaxed setting.

**Day 2: The City of Three Rivers – Passau**

Vilshofen’s greatest asset is its proximity to Passau, one of Germany’s most beautiful and historically significant cities. A short and scenic 25-minute train ride delivers you to this stunning confluence where the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers meet.

Your day in Passau should begin at St. Stephen's Cathedral, home to the largest cathedral organ in the world. Time your visit to catch the powerful 30-minute midday concert (daily except Sundays and holidays, May-October), an unforgettable acoustic experience. Afterward, wander through the cobblestone lanes of the Altstadt (Old Town), where the Italianate architecture feels more Mediterranean than German.

For the best views, make the climb or take the shuttle up to the Veste Oberhaus, the formidable fortress that looms over the city. From its walls, you can clearly see the distinct colors of the three rivers merging at the *Dreiflüsseeck* (Three Rivers' Corner). Enjoy lunch at a riverside café before exploring the city’s artisan shops and galleries. The train ride back to Vilshofen in the late afternoon is simple and stress-free.

**Day 3: Onward to Munich or Beyond**

From Vilshofen, your onward journey is straightforward. The German rail system is famously efficient, making it the best way to travel.

* **To Munich Airport (MUC):** The most common route is by train. You will typically take a regional train from Vilshofen to Plattling or Passau, then connect to a direct train to the Munich Airport. The entire journey takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours. We recommend investigating the *Bayern-Ticket*, a regional day pass that can offer significant savings for individuals or small groups traveling after 9 a.m. on weekdays.
* **To Munich City Center:** If you plan to extend your vacation further in the Bavarian capital, the train journey is just as simple, connecting through Plattling or Passau to Munich's main station (Hauptbahnhof).
* **To Prague:** For those continuing their European adventure, long-distance buses and trains from nearby Passau offer direct connections to Prague, making for a seamless transition to your next destination.

By treating Vilshofen as a gentle pause rather than a finish line, you transform a simple travel day into a rich cultural experience, adding a memorable, self-directed chapter to your European journey.

Reimburses your unused, non-refundable travel expenses and increased transportation costs during your trip if you have to return home early due to a covered reason, for instance when a family member has a qualifying medical emergency and needs your care. Examples include:

  • You have a covered illness or injury and a doctor says you must return home
  • A family member has a qualifying injury and needs your care
  • A covered emergency, like a fire or flood, makes your home uninhabitable

If you have a covered delay while traveling, travel insurance can reimburse you for meals, accommodations, and transportation expenses when your trip is delayed for a minimum number of consecutive hours for a covered reason. Minimum number of hours varies by plan.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE

Reimburses your expenses related to covered medical and dental emergencies* that might occur on your trip. This benefit can be especially helpful if you have a covered emergency outside the United States, as most health insurance policies won’t cover you outside the country. Examples include:

  • You lose a filling and need immediate dental treatment*

*A sublimit and maximum apply for this benefit. Check your plan documents for details.

BAGGAGE LOSS, DAMAGE, or THEFT

Reimburses the replacement of your lost, damaged, or stolen luggage and personal items while traveling.
