PROGRAM PURPOSE

Develop a strategy to treat and manage symptoms of attention deficit disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in order to improve quality of life of patients and their caregivers. Topics:
  1. Developing a strategy to incorporate the most appropriate medication interventions for pain management and sleep disorders
    • identify non-opiate and non-benzodiazepines interventions for pain and sleep disorders
    • Define the clinical relevance of associated BBW
    • Apply clinical pearls offered to optimize treatment success in high risk pattients
  2. Develop a strategy for addressing movement disorders (Parkinsons Disease and medication induced) to improve function and quality of life of your patients
    • Review medications available for use for Parkinsons Disease (PD)
    • Discuss psychosis associated with PD and medication options for intervention
    • Apply clinical pearls offered to address medication induced movement disorders
  3. Develop a strategy to assess adverse drug reaction events and to address neurologic side effects of commonly prescribed medications (including an overview of AED agents).
    • To identify neurologic adverse drug reactions that are associated with commonly prescribed medications
    • Discuss drug specific characteristics of AED agents used for a variety of psychiatric/neurologic conditions
    • Apply clinical pearls offered to improve overall medication management
  4. Develop a strategy to treat and manage symptoms of attention deficit disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in order to improve quality of life of patients and their caregivers.
    • Describe DSM-5’s criteria for diagnosis of ADHD and differentiate the presenting symptoms in children and adults.
    • Illustrate individualized treatment plans or adjustments to medication therapy for patients with ADHD
    • Define the adverse effects associated with pharmacological therapy and demonstrate an educational plan for patients or parents of patients on the expectations of therapy.

Dr. Mulcahy is a graduate from the University of New England College of Pharmacy where she received her doctorate in pharmacy. She completed a PGY1 in Pharmacy Practice and PGY2 in Psychiatric Pharmacy at the Buffalo Psychiatric Center and University at Buffalo. She served as the chief resident during her PGY2 year.

Dr. Mulcahy is a Board-Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist and Board-Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist. She also holds certifications in pain management, medication therapy management (MTM), and naloxone administration and education certified.

Dr. Mulcahy is currently a psychiatric clinical pharmacist at the Buffalo Psychiatric Center with the State of New York's Office of Mental Health (NYS-OMH). She is the first pharmacist in the state of New York to work on an Assertive Community Treatment team with OMH - assisting in the psychiatric pharmacotherapy, monitoring, and education of patients in the community living with serious mental illness. She also is a clinical assistant faculty member at SUNY Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences with a focus on psychiatry and neurology.

Dr. Mulcahy is a preceptor for SUNY Buffalo and D'Youville College pharmacy interns and oversees various research projects with graduate students, primarily focusing on medication safety, adverse drug reactions, and exacerbations of psychiatric conditions from polypharmacy. She has authored and co-authored numerous original research articles in peer reviewed journals and has completed various professional research poster presentations for national pharmacy organizations based on her research projects.

The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) has a reciprocal credit reporting agreement with the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). Members of the CFPC may claim up to 50 credits per five-year cycle from Physician's Recognition Award (PRA) Category 1 credits. Any additional credits are eligible as non-certified credits.
