Learning Objectives:
  1. Following the presentation, participants should be able to exclude common and generally benign causes of cyanosis in the newborn, and to consider and confidently diagnose cyanotic heart disease allowing for timely intervention and better outcomes.
  2. The session brings together the multiple considerations which may lead to feeding problems in the young thereby allowing the participants to more readily achieve early resolution.
  3. Upon completion of the session participants hopefully will be able to recognize the very sick child and to institute appropriate treatment to ensure the best outcomes.
  4. This interactive session will allow participants to reflect on their own practice with the aim of achieving a therapeutic interview as described by Winnicott.
  5. Following this presentation, participants should have an overall understanding of paediatric cardiology, regognize gaps in their knowledge and be more confident in making appropriate referrals.
  6. This question and answer session hopefully will alert participants to recognize the not so obvious but yet significant heart disease in childhood to allow for timely referral and treatment.
  7. Following the presentation, participants will appreciate the distress experienced by mothers following a prenatal diagnosis of heart disease and be able to meaningfully contribute to any decisions that need be made.
  8. Adaptation of adult “surviving sepsis campaign” to pediatric patients for the rapid recognition and treatment of the shock state to decrease mortality rates.
  9. Recognition of the challenges of the pediatric airway for optimal care and utilization of the newest technology/tools to manage the pediatric airway an optimize non-invasive respiratory support.
  10. Optimize strategies for invasive support of the pediatric patient in respiratory failure to reduce long-term sequelae of mechanical ventilation.
  11. Understand key concepts in the initial management of the pediatric DKA patient to reduce morbidity associated with miss-management. Review and understand vasoactive medication uses based on physiology of tissue- specific effects.
  12. Review first-line treatment for acute intracranial hypertension and discuss second and third-line strategies to reduce mortality and preserve viable brain tissue.
  13. Address current sedation and analgesic therapies for the ICU patient and newly recognized long-term sequelae of sedatives on pediatric brain development.
  14. Discuss known pediatric toxidromes and discuss ever-changing environment of synthetic intoxicants effecting pediatric/adolescent patient.

David A. Colvin, MD, FAAP is board certified in general pediatrics and pediatric critical care medicine. Originally from Seattle, WA, he holds a bachelors of science in Microbiology from the University of Washington where he also pursued post-baccalaureate work in medical ethics. He received his doctor of medicine from the American University of the Caribbean school of medicine. Following general pediatric residency at the University of Nevada School of Medicine Reno, David served as fellow in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford University. His research focused on cancer stem-cell biology in the labs of Dr. Michael Clarke and Dr. Irving Weissman.

After fellowship, Dr. Colvin returned to the Las Vegas area where he is clinical faculty at the University of Nevada Reno. He has served as residency site director for Sunrise Children's Hospital, Clerkship director for both pediatric and emergency medicine residencies in pediatric critical care medicine at Sunrise Children's Hospital and Medical Director for Pediatric and Neonatal Transport. Dr. Colvin's graduate education experience includes physician-as-educator training at Stanford University, the design and implementation of an individualized curriculum in critical care medicine for general pediatric residents, international lectureships and invited lectures for the American Academy of Pediatrics. Currently, Dr. Colvin resides in Seattle with his wife and children, where he continues to work in pediatric critical care medicine at Swedish Medical Center. David's interests include cycling, duathlons and civil aviation.

Professor Samuel Menahem from Melbourne Australia is a Consultant Paediatrician with extensive experience in General Paediatrics and Neonatology. In addition he has researched and published widely on the interface of Child Psychiatry and Paediatrics and has trained as a Child Psychotherapist. He has a subspecialty of Paediatric Cardiology extending from the foetus to the adult with congenital heart disease.

He has held Consultant appointments at the Royal Children's Hospital both as a Physician and Cardiologist, and at Monash Medical Centre as a Consultant Paediatrician and Paediatric Cardiologist. He has previously headed the General Paediatric Unit and the Paediatric Cardiology Unit and was Foundation Co-Director of the Foetal Cardiac Unit at the latter institution. He continues to hold consultant appointments as a Paediatrician and Cardiologist at a number of teaching and private hospitals.

Professor Menahem has an illustrious academic career. He graduated as top of his year from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery. He gained his specialist qualification to the Royal Australasian College of Physicians after completing his residency at the previous Prince Henry's Hospital, Melbourne. His Membership was subsequently elevated to a Fellowship of that College. He also is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand.

He completed a research Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Melbourne and also a Masters in Education (Higher education) from the same university, and a Master of Psychological Medicine from Monash University. He has held academic appointments at the University of Melbourne and Deakin University and remains a full professor in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Allied Health Monash University being a member of a number of its Departments. He continues to teach and mentor students and graduates from all three universities. He has also been a Visiting Professor and/or Examiner to institutions overseas and has presented and lectured at National and International Meetings. He continues to be active especially in clinical research and has an extensive publication list.

Professor Menahem now spends most of his time in private consultant practice and continues to conduct teaching clinics in rural Victoria. Although his referral base is from the surrounding areas with a dedicated referral pattern, his reputation has extended far and wide with referrals from other parts of Melbourne, country areas and even interstate. Many of his patients have stayed with him since infancy into adult life including a number of women with congenital heart disease who he has successfully cared for during their pregnancies. His consultations are always conducted using a holistic approach.
