Learning objectives:

Upon completion of this program, the attendee will be able to:
  • Analyze newly approved drugs for the treatment of acne and rosacea, and how to utilize them in practice.
  • Determine appropriate treatments for skin diseases strongly affected by the psyche
  • Recognize and treat the common bacterial and viral infections of the skin
  • Evaluate and utilize innovative therapies for patients with complicated conditions or common conditions which are not responding to textbook therapy.
  • Analyze established medications in order to safely and effectively use them for “off label” uses.
  • Assess, recognize, and evaluate comorbidities in the psoriatic patient.
  • Discuss the efficacy of newer systemic drugs in the treatment of moderate to severe psoriasis.
  • Explain a differential diagnosis for challenging dermatoses it the emergency setting.
  • Describe the clinical clues including classic findings used to diagnose emergent issues
  • Discuss the diverse etiologies of urticaria and their management.
  • Describe the treatment of angioedema based on the pathophysiology, and discuss the new treatments available.
  • Describe the management of a patient with atopic dermatitis, often requiring a long term, detailed protocol.
  • Discuss the complexities of drug allergy and the available management choices for each patient.
  • Explain the procedure for diagnosing a patient with food allergy, which requires a detailed history, and accurate testing methods which must be interpreted correctly.
  • Discuss the relative importance of indoor allergens in the patient with respiratory symptoms, as well as the need to take an extensive environmental history and to validate by allergy testing.

Stephen P. Stone, MD, FAAD
Professor Division of Dermatology, Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, Springfield, Illinois.

Dr. Stephen P. Stone is professor and Director of Clinical Research in the Division of Dermatology at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, Illinois. Dr. Stone graduated from Tufts University, and received his medical training at New York University School of Medicine. After serving with the U.S. Navy, he completed a residency in dermatology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Stone then moved to Springfield, Illinois where he maintained a private practice for more than two decades before moving to his current university position.

He has received numerous honors and citations throughout his distinguished career including Best Doctors in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Health Care and Who's Who in America. He is past Editor-in-Chief of Dialogues in Dermatology, a monthly audio journal published by the American Academy of Dermatology.

Dr. Stone served as the 67th president of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD from March 2006 through February 2007. He is a member of many professional organizations. His particular interests in dermatology include psoriasis and other inflammatory skin diseases, acne, occupational dermatology, and skin cancer.

Dr. Stone has given more than 160 lectures and Grand Rounds presentations outside of his university, including such international venues as Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an and Guangzhu, China, the Icelandic Dermatology Association, in Reykjavik, Iceland, the Congresso da Sociedade Brasileira Dermatologia, Curitiba and Salvador, Brazil, the Philippine Dermatological Society Annual Meeting in Manila, Republic of the Philippines, the Canadian Dermatological Association, Dermatrends III in Chiang Mai, Thailand, Hong Kong, and the International Congress of Dermatology, in Prague, Czech Republic.
