PROGRAM PURPOSE
Recent policy papers by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) and the American Dental Association (ADA) have established the importance of screening, diagnosis and treatment of Sleep Disordered Breathing.
The Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) and Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT) are the two primary treatments for SDB. This course would discuss the unique relationship between the physician and dentist in identifying and treating this debilitating disorder. The course will also cover current therapies and their efficacy and side effects.
Sleep is an emerging area of medicine and dentistry. Optimal sleep is important for pain control and to improve health. Disease prevention is very difficult without optimal sleep. Lack of sleep costs the U.S. about 411 billion in lost productivity.
