Program Purpose / Objectives

Objectives:

Objectives:

1. Describe current recommendations regarding concussion management. Determine and develop appropriate return to play guidelines

2. Describe risk factors associated with sudden cardiac death. Analyze ECG findings related to conditions associated with sudden cardiac death

3. Discuss physiologic changes associated with aging. Assess and develop appropriate exercise programs for older adults

4. Describe common pediatric and adolescent musculoskeletal conditions. Develop appropriate treatments plans for these conditions

5. Recognize, manage and treat common injuries encountered during sideline event coverage

6. Describe the indications and contraindications to joint injections. Recognize conditions where a joint injection is beneficial. Determine when a joint injection would be beneficial for the patient’s condition

7. Describe platelet rich plasma injections, their potential benefit and mode of action. Discuss the potential benefits of platelet rich plasma injections in conditions such as tendinitis, DJD, muscular tears

8. Discuss the bony anatomy of the upper extremity and diagnose and treat injuries of the upper extremity

9. Discuss the bony anatomy of the lower extremity and diagnose and treat injuries of the lower extremity

10. Recognize, manage, and treat overuse knee injuries

11. Discuss the anatomy of the shoulder and recognize and treat shoulder injuries and dysfunction

12. Recognize and treat various shoulder instability patterns

13. Discuss the anatomy of the ankle and recognize and properly treat ankle sprains and other injuries

14. Discuss the clinical indications, as well as the general surgical techniques, for hip and knee replacements in order to better served their patients

Faculty
Carlos R. Rodriguez, M.D., FAAFP,

Dr. Rodriguez is the Director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship and Assistant Director to the Family Residency Program at Bayfront Medical Center. Dr. Rodriguez received his B.A. in Biology from Harvard University in 1989. He completed his medical degree at the Rosalind Franklin University of Health Sciences/The Chicago Medical School in North Chicago, IL in 1993. Following medical school Dr. Rodriguez completed a General Surgery Internship at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA. He then joined the United States Navy where he served as General Medical Officer from 1994 to 1997. After completing his active duty commitment he remained in the United States Naval Reserve until 2002 when he was Honorably Discharged.

Dr. Rodriguez completed his Family Medicine Residency Program at The Medical Center of Central Georgia/Mercer University School of Medicine in 2001 where he served as Chief Resident during his final year. He then proceeded to complete a fellowship in Sports Medicine at Bayfront Medical Center. After finishing the fellowship program Dr. Rodriguez remained in the Tampa Bay area in private practice and later joined Community Health Centers of Pinellas where he served as Director of the Family Medicine Department until joining the Family Medicine Residency Program.

Dr. Rodriguez has served as a team physician and provided medical coverage for many of our local sports. These activities include the Tampa Bay Rays, Eckerd College and University of South Florida sports, St. Anthony's Triathlon, Seminole High School, Indian Rocks Christian School and the Tampa Bay Storm. He is also a licensed professional ringside physician and provides medical coverage for professional boxing and mixed martial arts in Florida.

Dr. Rodriguez is a diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine and holds a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, a member of the Florida Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine, and the Association of Ringside Physicians. His interests include management and treatment of concussions, musculoskeletal ultrasound and platelet rich plasma treatments.


George H. Canizares, M.D.,

Dr. Canizares is board certified in Orthopaedic Surgery, specializing in Sports Medicine. He received his Doctorate of Medicine degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, Florida. Dr. Canizares served his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan. He completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine at South Florida Orthopaedic Institute in Coral Gables, Florida.

He was selected to the NFL Neutral Physician Examiners Panel and served as the team doctor for the Maimi Heat and Miami Sol. Dr. Canizares was instrumental in the development of the sports medicine program at All Florida Orthopaedic Associates and several Pinellas County high schools and colleges. He has also traveled with several professional sports teams as the team physician.
