Mark Eisenberg, MD, MPH, FACC, FAHA

Dr. Eisenberg is a James McGill Professor of Medicine at McGill University and a Staff Cardiologist at the Jewish General Hospital. He is an Associate Member of the McGill Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Occupational Health. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Eisenberg is Director of the McGill MD-PhD Program, as well as Director of the Cardiovascular Health Services Research Group of the Jewish General Hospital and a Senior Investigator at the Centre for Clinical Epidemiology and Community Studies.

Dr. Eisenberg was born in Rochester, New York. He completed a BA in Chemistry in 1980 at Cornell University, followed by an MD at the University of Rochester. After completing his MD, Dr. Eisenberg did a residency in internal medicine at McGill University, a Master’s of Public Health at Harvard University, a research fellowship in echocardiography and epidemiology and a cardiology fellowship at the University of California in San Francisco. In 1995, Dr. Eisenberg completed an interventional cardiology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic.

In 2008-2009, Dr. Eisenberg spent a year in Israel as a visiting professor in the Department of Human Metabolism and Nutrition at the Joseph H. and Belle R. Braun Hebrew University, Hadassah School of Public Health and Community Medicine. During this sabbatical, he also completed an International Master’s of Health Leadership at McGill University.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Eisenberg has published over 300 articles in peer-reviewed journals and participated in multiple collaborative works. In addition, Dr. Eisenberg has authored four books.

Dr. Zappert is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine. As a faculty member at the Center for Neuroscience in Women’s Health, Dr. Zappert was instrumental in developing and directing the first Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program in Women’s Health. Previously, Dr. Zappert had served as Director of Clinical Training at Vaden Student Health Services at Stanford.

Currently, she teaches a course on Sexual Violence and Recovery and supervises the clinical work of residents in the Department of Psychiatry. In addition to her clinical, teaching, and research responsibilities, Dr. Zappert served as the founding Director of Stanford University's SHARE/Title IX office (Sexual Harassment/Assault Prevention Education) from its inception in 1993, and now holds the title of Director Emerita.

In 2001, Dr. Zappert initiated the Allies for Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program for women graduate and post-doctoral students at Stanford, and more recently, extended that program to create the Allies for Women in Social Science and Humanities (WISSH) program.

Dr. Zappert's clinical work and research have focused on the areas of women's mental health, work, and wellness. Her book, Getting It Right: How Working Mothers Successfully Take Up the Challenge of Life, Work and Family, has been nationally recognized as an authoritative resource for professional women and their families. Most recently, Dr. Zappert was the senior author of an article on The Impact of a Support Group Intervention for Women in STEM. In 2017, she was awarded a Faculty Fellowship at the Clayman Institute for Gender Research.

PORTS OF CALL

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

Civitavecchia serves as the maritime gateway to Rome, and it's essential to approach a day here with a clear and realistic plan. The 'Eternal City' is a 60- to 90-minute journey from the port, a commute that requires factoring travel time into your precious hours ashore. The most common and efficient method is the regional train, which connects Civitavecchia's station (a short walk or shuttle from the port) with Rome's key transit hubs. For those seeking more comfort and a direct route to specific sites, pre-booked private transfers are an excellent, albeit more costly, alternative.

With time being the most valuable currency, a successful day in Rome means choosing a focus. Attempting to conquer everything results in a frantic blur. We recommend choosing one of two paths. The first is a deep dive into Ancient Rome: pre-book tickets to explore the staggering scale of the Colosseum, walk through the ruins of the Roman Forum where emperors once stood, and marvel at the architectural genius of the Pantheon. This area is largely walkable and provides a cohesive historical narrative.

Alternatively, focus on the grandeur of Vatican City. Stand in the embrace of Bernini's colonnades in St. Peter's Square and enter the breathtaking St. Peter's Basilica, a monument to faith and art. A visit to the Vatican Museums to see the Sistine Chapel is possible, but requires strict, timed-entry tickets and a significant time commitment that will likely preclude other sightseeing.

Whichever path you choose, build in moments for the simple Roman pleasures that give the city its soul. Find a small piazza, order a quick espresso at a bar, toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain, or savor a scoop of authentic gelato. For those who prefer to avoid the journey altogether, Civitavecchia itself offers a pleasant waterfront, a bustling market, and the impressive Forte Michelangelo, providing a relaxed, local Italian experience.

Messina, Sicily

Messina serves as the bustling gateway to eastern Sicily’s most celebrated treasures, offering a compelling choice between iconic excursions and authentic city life. For many, the primary draw is Taormina, a stunning hilltop town that lives up to its reputation. Its Greco-Roman theater offers one of the world's great views, framing the Ionian Sea and the often snow-capped peak of Mount Etna. Beyond the theater, Taormina’s charm unfolds along the Corso Umberto, a pedestrian-only street lined with chic boutiques, cafes, and hidden courtyards leading to breathtaking coastal overlooks.

For a more elemental experience, an excursion to Mount Etna reveals the raw power of Europe's most active volcano. Ascending its slopes, the landscape transforms into a stark, lunar-like environment of black lava rock and volcanic craters. Wineries thriving in the fertile, mineral-rich soil on the volcano's lower flanks offer tastings that provide a literal taste of the terroir.

However, Messina itself should not be overlooked. It presents a grittier, more workaday Sicilian reality. The city’s heart is the Piazza del Duomo, home to a magnificent Norman cathedral and the world's largest astronomical clock. Be sure to arrive just before noon to witness the captivating spectacle as its gilded bronze figures animate to tell stories from the city’s history. A short walk from the port, you can savor classic Sicilian street food like arancini or a refreshing granita, experiencing a slice of local life far from the polish of Taormina. Messina offers a genuine crossroads: choose world-famous beauty or stay for a taste of an authentic port city.

Istanbul is not just a city; it's an epic, a collision of continents and cultures that unfolds across seven hills. Arriving by sea offers a stunning introduction to its skyline of domes and minarets. A single day here is an intense, unforgettable immersion, and the key is to focus your time on the historic heart of the old city, the Sultanahmet district.

From the modern Galataport cruise terminal, the efficient T1 tram line provides a direct and scenic link to this UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, within a short walk of each other, stand the titans of history. The Hagia Sophia is an architectural marvel that has served as the spiritual center for two world religions; its immense dome and layered history are profoundly moving. As it is a functioning mosque, modest dress and head coverings for women are required for entry. Across the square, the Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii) answers with its own soaring domes and a breathtaking interior of intricate Iznik tiles. Be aware that it is closed to visitors during the five daily prayer times.

Nearby, Topkapi Palace offers a glimpse into the opulent and secretive world of the Ottoman sultans. If time allows, prioritize the Harem section for its stunning chambers and stories. For a different kind of immersion, descend into the cool, atmospheric depths of the Basilica Cistern, an ancient underground reservoir supported by hundreds of marble columns. No visit is complete without experiencing the controlled chaos of the city's markets. The Grand Bazaar is a labyrinth of over 4,000 shops, a world unto itself, while the nearby Spice Bazaar is a more manageable assault on the senses with its fragrant mounds of spices, teas, and Turkish delight.

A day in Istanbul is a whirlwind. We advise choosing two or three of these major sites to explore thoroughly rather than rushing through them all. The experience is about absorbing the atmosphere—the call to prayer echoing through the streets, the scent of roasting chestnuts, the view of ferries crisscrossing the Bosphorus. It is a city that leaves a permanent mark, offering a powerful taste that will undoubtedly call you back for more.

Kusadasi (Ephesus), Turkey

While Kusadasi serves as a pleasant, modern resort town, its primary significance for the traveler is its role as the gateway to Ephesus. This is not merely a collection of ruins; it is one of the best-preserved ancient metropolises in the Mediterranean, rivaling Pompeii in its ability to transport visitors back to the height of the Roman Empire. The site is vast, anchored by the iconic Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre, which once seated 25,000 spectators. Walking the marble Curetes Street allows you to trace the actual grooves left by ancient chariots.

For a truly immersive experience, we strongly advise securing tickets to the Terrace Houses. Located within the archaeological site but often requiring a separate entrance fee, these covered excavations reveal the domestic lives of the Ephesian elite. The preserved frescoes and intricate mosaics here offer an intimate counterpoint to the monumental public buildings outside and are well worth the extra cost.

From a practical standpoint, Ephesus demands preparation. The site offers very little shade, and the white marble reflects the intense summer heat. High-quality walking shoes are essential due to uneven, slippery surfaces. Beyond the ancient city, the House of the Virgin Mary offers a quiet, spiritual experience in the hills above, while the Basilica of St. John in nearby Selçuk provides further historical context.

Upon returning to the port, Kusadasi itself offers a functional, if commercial, conclusion to the day. The Grand Bazaar is famous for leather goods and Turkish rugs, though the sales tactics can be aggressive. For a more relaxed end to your visit, bypass the high-pressure shops for a seat along the waterfront promenade to enjoy a strong Turkish coffee and baklava while overlooking the Aegean.

Athens (Piraeus), Greece

Let’s be direct: your arrival at the port of Piraeus is purely functional. It’s a massive, bustling commercial hub, and its primary virtue is its proximity to Athens, the cradle of Western civilization. A day here is an incredible opportunity, but it requires a smart plan.

Your first priority is getting into the city center efficiently. The metro (Green Line 1 from Piraeus station) is a direct and affordable option that bypasses all traffic. Taxis are plentiful, but be sure to agree on a fare or insist on using the meter to avoid surprises. Once in Athens, the Acropolis is the day's non-negotiable centerpiece. Seeing the Parthenon preside over the city is a profound experience that connects you directly to 2,500 years of history, philosophy, and art. We strongly advise pre-booking your tickets online to save precious time you’d otherwise spend in a queue under the Greek sun.

After descending from the Acropolis, the modern Acropolis Museum awaits at its base. This stunningly designed space provides essential context for what you’ve just seen, housing the original artifacts in a climate-controlled, brilliantly curated environment. From there, immerse yourself in the Plaka, the city’s oldest neighborhood. This labyrinth of cobblestone streets, draped in bougainvillea, is where you’ll find the true Athenian spirit. Our best advice for a port day in Athens is to be strategic. Don’t try to see everything. Focus on the Acropolis, its museum, and a wonderful meal in the Plaka. By doing so, you will have experienced the profound essence of the city, rather than just rushing past its landmarks. Wear comfortable shoes, stay hydrated, and prepare for an unforgettable immersion into the foundations of our world.

Naples, Italy

Naples is a destination that demands a choice: do you dive into the chaotic, vibrant heart of the city, or use it as a strategic launchpad for the world-class treasures surrounding it? As a port of call, Naples offers an embarrassment of riches, but the sheer volume of options requires a disciplined itinerary. The most critical advice we can offer is to resist the urge to do everything; traffic in Campania is notorious, and overpacking your day often leads to stress rather than enjoyment.

For history enthusiasts, the primary draw is the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. Pompeii remains the headline attraction, offering a sprawling, visceral look at Roman life frozen in time. However, we often direct clients toward the smaller, better-preserved site of Herculaneum. Because it was buried in mud rather than ash, Herculaneum retains multi-story buildings and wooden elements that perished in Pompeii, all within a footprint that is much easier to navigate in a few hours.

If you prefer coastal glamour, the Bay of Naples is your gateway. A high-speed hydrofoil can transport you to the Isle of Capri, famous for the Blue Grotto and high-end boutiques, though be mindful of summer crowds. Alternatively, the cliffside town of Sorrento offers a refined, relaxed atmosphere perfect for a leisurely lunch of fresh seafood and limoncello. While the Amalfi Coast is spectacular, we advise caution when attempting it on a cruise stop; the winding roads are breathtaking but slow, leaving little room for error in your return schedule.

Should you choose to stay in Naples itself, prepare for an experience that is gritty, loud, and profoundly authentic. The historic center, Spaccanapoli, is a UNESCO World Heritage site teeming with baroque churches and hidden courtyards. The National Archaeological Museum is essential viewing, as it houses the actual mosaics and artifacts removed from the excavation sites. Finally, this is the birthplace of pizza. Skipping a meal at a historic pizzeria here would be a missed cultural imperative.
